Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, heir to a noble family tasked with ruling an inhospitable world where the only thing of value is the “spice” melange, a drug capable of extending life and enhancing consciousness. Coveted across the known universe, melange is a prize worth killing for….

Fascinating characters set in a world abounding in mystery and wonder. I loved discovering the world as the plot pushed me onward through the book. Delightful reading!
Dune is my choice for a deserted island. It is a complex story that touches many points – class distinction, ecology, politics, religion and technology. The mystery element of the story is the desert planet Arrakis that harvests the spice melange. You need no distractions to get wrapped up in all that is going on.
Frank Herbert’s Dune is a classic in the Sci-fi genre. A story about the struggle over the control of “Spice” a valuable mineral through out the universe and found only on the planet Arrakis aka Dune. I couldn’t help but make the comparison of 3 planets working to out maneuver each others for the control of Dune to 3 corporations working against each other here on Earth to own a 4th corporation.
There lies the rub for me.
Taking place in the year 10 thousand and some odd years, which by the way i think is the furthest out in years of any sci-fi story I have ever read or watched. i would have hoped that by then there would be loftier goals, but alas money is still the root of all evil.
Digression aside … Dune is a masterpiece of writing, with a complex plot that refuses to lose you in the mix. A cast of characters, whom while futuristic appear familiar and well rounded. Herbert’s ability to create 4 worlds each with such diversity and still maintain continuity is truly the work of a master craft man.
In all honesty “Dune” is not favorite Sci-fi read, but to not have read it is to miss out on an impressive piece of literary work.
Weirder and weirder
A classic, not light reading.
The elaborate world building and political maneuvering are beautifully orchestrated in Dune. The struggle for power over the desolate planet captivates and keeps the reader guessing. A fantastic read for all ages.
If there was one book I would have to credit with influencing my own writing career I would have to say it was Frank Herbert’s Dune. I can still recall the feeling I got as Herbert drew me into his world with outstanding character development and intricately created worlds and cultures. The type of book that every other should aspire to.
Every time I read this book I get more out of it.
There are so many lessons from this book to think about for years to come.
Good read for science fiction fans. If you like discovering a whole new dry planet this book is for you.
My all time favorite book! I love the character and world building.
A genuine classic. Frank Herbert’s Dune has always struck me as exemplary of intelligent, thought-provoking science fiction. In particular, this book is a narrative tale of the operation and subversion of power. A subject dear to my heart.
Strongly recommend this book for all readers with a head for ideas and a desire to read something that will offer them the opportunity to think.
The Dune universe created by Frank Herbert is right up there with Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and Narnia. The books are page turners — if you saw the movie try to put it out of your mind as you read the book is 100X as complex and much more entertaining.
I was really skeptic about leaning into this book because of all the hype. Countlessly mentioned as “the most influential science fiction novel” sounded a bit to good to be true. Yet it lives up to the hype and more. Set in a distant future (unlike the Star Wars saga which takes place “a long time ago”) it is Sci-Fi Game of Thrones in which the Galaxy awaits the arrival of a “chosen child” that will bring prosperity and peace. It is full of wonderfully nuanced characters and intricate relations. It explores themes like loyalty, class systems, ecology, etc. In fact this last theme, ecology, is what must surprised and not just about how ahead of its time it was but also because it gives it its proper weight without ever falling into propaganda.
A definite book to be put on the list of “books to read before you die.”
What an imagination! Space fantasy without the same old dragons and kings … yet keeping the human propensity for hierarchical relationships. It’s the human race, transported to another part of the universe … physics problems solved by “folding space, incredible leaps in technology … and yet the same power struggles, same yearning to “belong” to a tribe of some sort, same need for something/someone to worship. And love … that hasn’t changed at all.
A classic from my youth, it was a good free read that hooked me into buying the rest of the series for my ereader so my old eyes could enjoy them again. The whole cycle (6 books) has held up well. .
One of the iconic classics of science fiction. Like all good sci fi, it really is simply a vehicle for exploring the various aspects of human nature: politics, religion, loyalty, betrayal, power, greed and revenge. What more needs to be said?
Some of my favorite books (the Dune series 1-4) by a favorite author. Believable characters, on a world that is well built, Original story telling.
This is an early and still not one of the great Hugo winners. While I was not as enthusiastic for later expeditions to Dune world, this remains a satisfying read and reread.
Dune is a great beginning to a series that I followed to the end. Shows the beginnings of a leader who would come to power and lead his people to overcome the evil group of Harkonnens. It has been about 40 years since I read Dune but Paul Atredies (I may have misspelled his name) and the fremen command the sands with the worms and cinnamon.
