A classic science-fiction story
One of my all time favorite science fiction works. I have enjoyed virtually the entire “Dune” related books. But the original is still in my mind the very best.
There is probably nothing I can say about Dune that hasn’t already been said. It is one of my all time favorites of any genre.
I don’t understand how this ever became a classic. It is tedious and murky, though every now and then Herbert lays out some very clever ideas such as stillsuits and riding sandworms.
One of the classic sci-fi books, it is a must read for fans of this genre. Much better than any of the sequels and better than the movie.
A must read classic for sci-fi fans. The movies don’t do it justice.
You should reread Dune every year
This is classic science fiction. Among the best of the genre and an all-time favorite. Fascinating consideration of the intermeshing of politics and religion and the power and potential terror of a messianic leader.
Fantastic. Amazing. Captivating.
Totally sci-fi at its best.
Highly recommend. A sci-fi classic
I loved this as a teenager, when it was new. I have no idea how well it has aged, or if it would appeal to more adult sensibilities.
The many sequels and spinoffs were disappointing.
The story line is timeless, you don’t feel like you are reading outdated science fiction, this is a true classic! The world of Dune is complex and the characters grow and develop. There are a lot of under currents in the book.
One of the best S/F novels of all time.
Frank Herbert’s Dune is just the beginning of an epic story line, his universe is as dynamic and fascinating as you could imagine. Truly unforgettable with much written between the lines.
Excellent book. Frank Herbert was a master world builder and story teller.
Being a Wildlife Ecology student, in the Arizona desert, at the time I was reading this struck several chords. It was epic tension with a depth of complexity in court drama and intrigue. I believe Dune was the best of the series. None of the movies have done it justice.
I read this when it first came out in 1965 (and I was 14) and it was mind-blowing and ground-breaking. Still an amazing start to an overblown series.
More politics and religion than I expected.
Unusually prescent future extrapolated from things Herbert saw happening well before our current drive to protect the planet.
Sweeping future combines feudal government and technology, religion and ecology, genetic manipulation and the unquantifiable power of love to derail best-laid plans.
Introduces the sandworms, perhaps one of the best alien creatures of science fiction.
There are a number of books within the Dune universe, but the first is still the best. Well worth the effort.
