NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE directed by Denis Villeneuve, starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Chang Chen, Charlotte Rampling, and Javier Bardem.Frank Herbert’s classic masterpiece—a triumph of the imagination and one of the bestselling science fiction novels of all time.Set on … the bestselling science fiction novels of all time.
Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, heir to a noble family tasked with ruling an inhospitable world where the only thing of value is the “spice” melange, a drug capable of extending life and enhancing consciousness. Coveted across the known universe, melange is a prize worth killing for….
When House Atreides is betrayed, the destruction of Paul’s family will set the boy on a journey toward a destiny greater than he could ever have imagined. And as he evolves into the mysterious man known as Muad’Dib, he will bring to fruition humankind’s most ancient and unattainable dream.
A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction.

This is a vicious, fascistic book and I hold anyone who gets taken in by it culpable. If this were about Arabs and oil instead of a multi-stellar civilization and water it probably wouldn’t work. But it’s bizarrely well thought-out and beautifully written. I have always objected to it, and I recommend it highly.
A classic. This book made me think. It made me challenge some of my ideas about my world. It’s a great book.
One of the best books I’ve ever read!
loved this book and couldn’t wait to read more from its family. it is a classic while still taking us into a world we never knew existed and then involving us in the family’s future
Just read it, OK? It’s extremely multivalent, literally something for everyone: Adventure, romance, SF, intrigue, suspense, mystery, noblesse oblige and courtly love, black-hearted villains, magic and magical realism, environmentalism, multicultural conflict, anti-colonialism, war-stories… It is genuine science-fiction, not science fantasy or fantasy, but set so far in the future, after so much advancement that large parts of it read like classic fantasy with spaceships and realistic politics. The backstory goes back thousands of years and addresses the classic problems of world-building in deep-time SF. (Why are people still human? How are they competing?) A genuine classic, swept the fan and pro awards, it’s been adapted for movies more than twice, with a TV miniseries as well, several comic-book adaptations and several famously failed attempts at movie adaptations. This is the first of a series, but most other books by this author were indifferent at best, including all the sequels. (You’ve been warned.) Some people find it very hard to read, because it has so much world-building. (I just read it twice on first reading, because I could not -believe- what I had read the -first- time…) If you need to know what a word means, most editions have a glossary in the back.
Read this book when in college. Never forgot it. Hated the movies.
Great story.
I’m not sure how many times I’ve read this. “Classic” doesn’t half do it justice. It just grabs you, and builds. And builds! Intrigue, politics, ecology, a “world” that spans many solar systems and has its own history and religious development… and a joke of sorts at the end that I suspect passes by a lot of readers. Not to be confused with the IMHO abominations created by cinema, nor even the forgettable sequels by the same author. This monumental book was meant to stand alone – except for the surprisingly interesting and entertaining “reference” materials at the end.
these books are widely popular but not my kind of story. Too dark and icky for me.
classic great sci fi
This is sci-fi at its best. An original, exciting story line, vividly drawn characters, and excellent writing. I recommend it!
A book I love and have reread several times
A classic book.
,
It’s been years since I read it but I read it because it’s a sci-fi classic and friends recommended it to me. I found it confusing and ultimately found the series a chore to read. In a single dose, however, it’s entertaining enough.
Absolute classic
Dune is the first in a series of six books and is an amazing and imaginitive story. I have read the series at least four times over the years. But don’t look to the movies for the full scope of the book.
Great book that setup the Dune series.
Read this book. When you get to the end, go back and read it a second time. Read it again five years later, and five years after that.
A Sci-Fi classic. A must read.
