I love Duncan but I was so sad when he had to leave Raphael. Over the last few books I’ve grown to love Raphael and Duncan and their relationship together as sire and child. Duncan is always at Raphael’s back, even when Cyn, Raphael’s human mate, tries to take her place by Raphael’s side. It’s hard imagining Duncan not being Raphael’s lieutenant. But Duncan’s power has been leashed for a while now and it’s time he steps up and claims the territory he was meant to rule.
Duncan quickly takes over the D.C. territory and is immediately greeted with a human woman desperately looking for her lost roommate. Duncan is intrigued by the woman, Emma, and makes finding her missing friend a priority.
The previous vampire lord left a whole lot of nasty stuff that Duncan needs to clean up. While most vampires are happy Duncan is the new lord, the humans in congress are not and one senator in particular decides to eliminate Duncan and his people.
While I didn’t like Duncan parting from Raphael’s side, it is definitely Duncan’s time to shine. He is powerful enough and it shows in his actions as he takes over the D.C. territory. Duncan is strong, but his resolve always seems to falter around the beautiful human Emma. She gets under his skin and into his heart quickly as Duncan does the same to her. Their romance was quick but the two are evenly paired.
I like Emma’s fire and how she doesn’t take any bullshit from Duncan or the vampire politics that follow. She reminds me a lot of Cyn. I loved the characters, the plot and the unexpected vampire betrayer. I totally didn’t see that one coming! Another exciting book from the mind of D.B. Reynolds.
***I received an eBook copy from the publisher in February 2014 in exchange for an honest review. All conclusions reached are my own***

So what happens when it’s time for this powerful right hand man to venture out and face the greatest challenge of his very long life.

5 Solid Stars
Negatives & Positives
What an amazing writer. From page one you are caught up. By the end of chapter 4 you are so involved in the story you become a part of it.
I did find 2 typos. Oh, and 2 small areas that slowed the pace just a little bit. But neither of these things interfered with this amazingly fantastic story.
Duncan did not disappoint in his book. I had high expectations and not only were those expectations met, they were surpassed.
Emmaline Duquet is a great main female character and I absolutely loved her.
Duncan & Emma together made pure magic. The romance between them is fiery hot and steamy.
The mystery and suspense is spot on. You slowly unfold who the culprits in this nefarious group are. Some of them become apparent, others come as a surprise. Their crimes are horrendous. Duncan and Emma both want to make them bleed for those they have abused and left broken or worse, dead. They work together to bring justice and they do it with a vengeance.
I LOVE THIS SERIES!
