Don’t miss the thrilling novel from undisputed King of Horror and #1 New York Times bestselling author Stephen King about what happens when the barrier between our world and that of the supernatural is breached… No more than a dark pencil line on a blank page. A horizon line, maybe. But also a slot for blackness to pour through… A terrible construction site accident takes Edgar Freemantle’s … accident takes Edgar Freemantle’s right arm and scrambles his memory and his mind, leaving him with little but rage as he begins the ordeal of rehabilitation. A marriage that produced two lovely daughters suddenly ends, and Edgar begins to wish he hadn’t survived the injuries that could have killed him. He wants out. His psychologist, Dr. Kamen, suggests a “geographic cure,” a new life distant from the Twin Cities and the building business Edgar grew from scratch. And Kamen suggests something else.
“Edgar, does anything make you happy?”
“I used to sketch.”
“Take it up again. You need hedges…hedges against the night.”
Edgar leaves Minnesota for a rented house on Duma Key, a stunningly beautiful, eerily undeveloped splinter of the Florida coast. The sun setting into the Gulf of Mexico and the tidal rattling of shells on the beach call out to him, and Edgar draws. A visit from Ilse, the daughter he dotes on, starts his movement out of solitude. He meets a kindred spirit in Wireman, a man reluctant to reveal his own wounds, and then Elizabeth Eastlake, a sick old woman whose roots are tangled deep in Duma Key. Now Edgar paints, sometimes feverishly, his exploding talent both a wonder and a weapon. Many of his paintings have a power that cannot be controlled. When Elizabeth’s past unfolds and the ghosts of her childhood begin to appear, the damage of which they are capable is truly devastating.
The tenacity of love, the perils of creativity, the mysteries of memory, and the nature of the supernatural–Stephen King gives us yet another novel as fascinating as it is gripping and terrifying.more
An amazing book. It’s filled with typical King character development, and I had a hard time putting it down because I needed to know what would happen next. Highly recommend!
I read a lot of Stephen King. A lot. And for some reason I keep thinking about this one. Duma Key didn’t make quite the splash of some of his other more recent releases, but I think it’s right up there with his best stuff. The sense of place he establishes is fantastic: An artist trapped in his own head while also in self-imposed exile in the …
This is a phenominal King book. Edgar loses an arm in an accident and as he struggles with the anger of it and through rehab, his marriage does not survive. Trying to get away from all of it, he rents a beach house to start over. There he finds much more to deal with than pity for himself. Slowly, he finds he want to live, and the rumors about the …
It’s funny, I read King’s Florida beach novel during a brutally cold Minnesota winter storm. Thirty below, not wind-chill, just straight up bone chilling cold. We also got plenty of accompanying snow. In this 600-page beast, King still transported me to burning sandy beaches and dangerous tropical storms. It begins with a construction-site …
Cant say enough about this book. Ready for another go at it too. I read this a while back and it still stays at the forefront of my mind. This is typical King, yet with a twist. There is friendship, love, horror, supernatural forces, and life being put into perspective. Now Im not a huge sci-fi, supernatural fan yet in Duma Key it all seemed …
Duma Key, a fictional island off Florida’s Gulf coast, provides the name and setting for this atmospheric novel. The protagonist, a likeable, hard-working fellow named Edgar, experiences a life-altering accident at work which leaves him with a brain injury, a lot of pain, and without an arm. He moves to Duma Key, Florida to recover and discovers a …
Duma Key is King at his finest. I was immediately drawn into the world of sand and shore, smelling the salt…and feeling that all-too-uncomfortable tingling on the back of my neck. Every chapter was a haunting experiment in altered reality. It didn’t help that I read it on the beach, which made every line more poignant. A must-read for people who …
Being a huge Stephen King fan I must be honest and say I was actually a little let down by this book. It was well written and entertaining but I found the story a bit formulaic and shallow. I also must say as a disclaimer I am not as much of a fan of Kings non supernatural based stories so take that in to consideration. If the villain had turned …
I will forever hear the grinding of the shells, shells, shells when I think of Duma Key.
I loved it! From the scenery to the sci-fi/paranormal elements, it was completely unpredictable!
My favorite part was the description and scenes of the art- how art and the talent of art unfolds and feels. How when in the flow of art you can lose yourself …
I listened to the audiobook while working in the yard and frequently found myself going back to insure I heard every detail. It is a slow burn and the supernatural elements don’t kick in for awhile, but it was well worth the wait. It’s not a big scare book, but it is a wonderful story.
Excellent book with memorable characters, about a man recovering from a terrible accident. Can’t say much without giving it away, but the writing is excellent, the story compelling, and you will want to ignore everything so you can just read this book. Treat yourself and BUY THIS BOOK!
If you like Stephen King you should enjoy this book.
Not my favorite King book. For me it was so so.
Fun read!
The book was clever and entertaining and not too scary for this chicken.
my all-time favorite novel.
The best kind of strange
Seems to be one of King’s lesser known books. I don’t know why. The story is original and scary, with shocking twists and turns.
Written as only Stephen King can. I couldn’t put it down.
This is actually one of my favorite Stephen King books. The secluded setting is perfectly suited for King’s descriptive prose, and you’ll feel like you’re there with him. I find myself going back to this story when I need an escape, and can’t retreat to an island in the Keys.
