As the snow melts, a disturbing truth emerges. Colorado mountain detective David Wolf is back in the latest page-turning mystery that will leave your heart pounding and lungs pumping for air. A Rocky Points businessman goes missing, leaving behind an SUV drifted over in snow and a lot of questions for the Sluice-Byron County SD. But the answers are hard to come by, and Chief Detective David … by, and Chief Detective David Wolf’s personal problems aren’t making investigating any easier for him and his team.
As the temperatures rise in the Chautauqua Valley, the most important clue emerges from the melting drifts. At the same time, Wolf’s memories surface from the shadowy depths of his mind and back into his life. Even for a man with Wolf’s history, dealing with the case and facing his demons head-on proves too much, and Wolf is brought to his knees, both physically and mentally.
Will the valley’s best cop rise again, purified by fire? Or will his ashes drift away on the high winds of the Rockies, leaving behind a justice unpaid?

Full of grit and wit and heart-pounding suspense, you won’t be able to stop reading this latest David Wolf novel until the last page.
I pretty much like David Wolf, though sometimes he makes my teeth hurt.
Dave is having a problem getting over his lost love and has crawled into the bottle.
A businessman is missing. His car was found at his home with the windows open, full of snow. But, no body.
Three months later, the body is found by an ortho doctor. The victim’s head has been crushed, then the body dumped in a snow bank. Wolf has to crawl out of the bottle long enough to solve the crime.
I loved this entire series of 12 books and might even read it again. The best I have read in a long time. Don’t miss it.
I just wish Jeff Carson could write faster. I can’t wait for his next book to come out.
Okay, this is a good solid mystery in Colorado. This is book twelve and my first one with chief detective David Wolf.
A stand alone book except for missing information on his first wife and she is mentioned several times. I do know he has a son, another wife and little girl (not his) that walked away from him and the job that consumes him. He is an alcoholic on and off the job. A man reported missing is just that till later when his body is found.
His partner Patterson, pregnant with second child, is a well written character and carries a full load of work.
The mystery is not that interesting nor heart pounding till near the end when a child is in danger.
The relationship between Wolf and his son Jack is nice and I loved the exchanges between Wolf and Dr. Hawkwood, therapist. Wolf has given up drinking but has an incident that requires he talk to the doctor and that part read true and real.
I guess I would suggest book one to develope a feel for Wolf and the mysteries he solves.
I liked all of the David Wolf stories. I was hooked on the characters and good story line after reading a free copy of To The Bone. Had to get the rest of the series.
Love the characters and action packed chapters. Highly recommend.
This is one of the best books I have read this year. It was about duty, self sacrifice, loss and the ability to over come. Amazingly written and outstanding characters. I will read this more than once. It deserves more than five stars.
What a great book which is what all Jeff’s books are. I hated that Wolf had become a drunk in the beginning of the book but saw that there was a reason later in the book. We hate to see our heroes fall and become too human. I hated it when he was demoted to a detective but he is better at being the CHIEF Detective than being the Sheriff and playing politics which MacLean is really good at that job. He sees things others don’t to get the case solved the correct way.
Another great Jeff Carson book
I really like all his books
Nice read – continuation of the series. Maybe not as good as some earlier books in the series.
Live the entire series
Very good book, hard to put down! Full of suspense!
