This is the type of book that gives you all the feels! Both characters thought of themselves as damaged souls. Carter felt that he wasn’t worthy of happiness and love, Billie had lost hope on love and happily ever afters because of her tough childhood. Their love is pure, passionate and will heal their shattered souls and the reader is able to perceive this in every single word poured in this book. Anna Brooks is such a versatile author, she will wake up the butterflies in your stomach with her sweet scenes, make you fan yourself with her hot scenes and bite your nails with the suspense without you even acknowledging it.
Billie grew up in a trailer with a violent father who relentlessly abused her and her mother. When she is 18, her mother manages to help her escape and start a new life in California, which they see as the land of dreams. A few years later, Carter encounters her and finds himself irresistibly drawn to her, and not just because of her appearance. He is burdened by major emotional baggage from his own life experiences. They have both been permanently changed by the tragedies in their lives, yet they each possess the ability to heal one another.
This story was highly emotional, in multiple ways. I don’t give spoilers, but I will tell you that I had tears in my eyes more than once while reading this book. There are some amazing twists to the story and a wonderfully satisfying ending.
Fresh starts are difficult. How far can you put the past aside and move on? Billie and Carter try at all costs. She, with the help of her mother, fled the nightmare that was her home. Three years later, she lives in a good apartment, works as a waitress, has no luxuries, but can survive. She escaped from the hell she lived in, but the marks still remain. Carter was a very famous surfer who, after a personal tragedy, abandoned his career and closed down to the world, blaming himself for what happened in the past.
She dreams of being an actress, not by vocation, but by trying to recreate a sense of happiness she experienced with her mother, at a time when the escape from reality was a solution. He, now a bodyguard, puts himself in the role of savior to try to repair a mistake, and who knows achieve redemption.
A bump will make them know each other. The girl who has suffered and feels fear and does not live will develop a friendship with the boy who has long been locked out of the world and amidst so many differences and similarities, the two discover that they are exactly what the other needs.
Gradually, this friendship causes changes in both. Carter watches the resurgence of his protective instincts and can not hide that Billie evokes feelings until then dormant. Billie, who does not let anyone approach, starts to trust Carter, and feels protected by his side.
An unusual and dangerous situation appears in Billie’s way, and it is up to Carter to be her savior and to rescue her. The two will have to confront the past in search of closure, and thus free themselves from all the ties that bind them, if they want the happy ending. The book is good, funny despite the past of the characters, the couple has chemistry and the plot is well conducted. As I said above, fresh starts are difficult, but if you allow yourself, the possibility of a happy future is within your reach. Billie and Carter did it.
I haven’t read the first book in this series, but I didn’t feel like I was missing anything when I read this one. Billie had escaped an abusive father, thanks to help from her mother, and Carter had lived through a horrible accident that claimed his fiancée. When the two meet, they are immediately drawn together. So much happens in this book, but Billie and Carter falling in love is the most important thing of all. I love their interactions, the way each wants to make the other safe and happy. There are moments I want to shake one or the other of them (mostly Carter), but they are very believable and loveable characters. I just adore this story. I do plan to go back and read the first book, and I’ll read any that follow. I will be amazed if any make me fall for the main couple as much as this one did, but I will try. The author told a wonderful story, and I highly recommend this book.
This one started right out of the gate. I liked that Billie was trying to make her life turn out well for a selfless purpose, while doing it alone. Carter saw her, fell into insta-lust and wanted to be her protector. They help each other get through their tragic pasts. There’s some shady stuff going on that leaves you intrigued.
Carter Cane works for Royal Ace Security and is a former world famous surfer who gave it all up six years ago after the death of his girlfriend, Zoe Sanders.
Billie Bishop has been on the run for three years now to escape her abusive father. She works at a cafe but is trying to make something of herself.
When Carter and Billie meet outside of a cafe and then at a farmer’s market maybe destiny is trying to tell them something. When Carter is there for Billie time after time she realizes that he is good for her and when she lands herself in a heap of trouble will Carter be able to get to her in time?
This was a great book about finding love again and trusting someone when you’ve been let down in the past.
Carter wanted to put his past to rest and move onto the future without any mention of surfing or Zoe ever. As we learn he just had so much guilt over everything that he felt like he couldn’t go back to that part of his life. He had gotten into security and wanted to protect people – probably due to what he felt he couldn’t do in the past.
Zoe was a survivor and I loved that she survived the way she did and relied on transit and had such a naive sense of the world and what could go wrong. I loved that she was open with Carter about her boss and her audition and how he promised he would be there for her.
The chemistry between Zoe and Carter was through the roof and I loved how they were there for each other but it took awhile for their secrets to be revealed.
I loved how Carter was there for Zoe and the extent he went to in order to get Zoe out of the trouble she was in. I also loved what he did for her mom!
The end was great and I look forward to more in this series!!
This is the second book in the series and I enjoyed it as much as the first. Billie was such a sweet innocent character even with her horrific past she still had a naivety about her, Carter was the perfect person to compliment her and make her stronger. His past had been holding him back but his need to protect and love her made both of their futures better. Overall this was a nice easy read. I’m looking forward to more from this series
OMG MY HEART WAS RACING JUST FROM THE PROLOGUE….
Anna Brooks you know how to catch a reader’s attention.
This book was beautiful and sweet and heartbreaking and at times Nail Biting. You ladies are gonna freaken adore Carter and Billie’s story. They both have such hurt and heartache from their pasts. And being witness to Carter breaking his and walls down was even more better.
Their story has all the goodie stuff we have come love and appreciate about Anna’s books.
Enjoy this insanely Great Book….
This is the second book in the Guarding Her series and let me just say, Anna Brooks did not disappoint once again. Carter is a sweet person and so protective of Billie. Billie is also so sweet & kind. She was able to get away from he abusive father, thanks to her mom. Carter and Billie are a wonderful couple. You definitely need to read this series. It’s becoming one of my favorites.
This is the 2nd book in the series this time we get carters story and we meet a girl named Billie. She’s from a rough background. Billie holds secrets but so does carter will these two last but Also Billie has a interview will carter save her before it’s too late? Omg this book had me on my toes! Bring me the next book
Lots of action keeps you wanting to read more.Definitely worth the read
Billie had a horrible childhood. Living with an abusive father, until one night her mom helps her escape. Even though she had a hard beginning in life, there is something sweet and innocent about her, which Carter finds fascinating. Carter, who is dealing with his own demons, is so protective of her when he meets her and she definitely not used to being cared for. She never thought any man could be that way.
They help each other get over there fears.
I really enjoyed this 2nd book in Guarding Her series.
Oh this book gave me all the feels. I felt so much for Carter and Billie. Their history was just tragic but they did find each other and that makes me so happy.
Carter and Billie… Another great example of Anna Brooks writing a great Alpha. This series continues with Carter, that has his own demons to battle, but he keeps running into Billie..and the more he runs into her the more he wants to get to know her. Billie helped escape her life via her selfless mother, and is trying to build a life. Carter finally decides that he can’t stay away from Billie, and when Billie runs into trouble, his protective instincts kick in. I love these two together. You don’t have to read the 1st book in the Guarding Her series to enjoy this one, but you should! It will enrich the story by getting cameos from stories past…which I loved!
absolutely loved this book it had a great story line. It was amazing and sucked you in right away. I highly recommend this book
It’s sweet story with heartbreaking moments. It will suck you as it takes you through an emotional ride with its twists and turns. It keeps you engaged throughout the story with a great storyline. I loved the characters. I enjoyed the connection, banter and chemistry between the characters. It’s an entertaining read.
This one drew me in by the story line. I read the first one so when I seen this one I thought I would give it a go. This one is centered around Billie and Carter who take you to the edge. They both have their pasts but now you are drawn to what could happen now. When they cross paths things start happening. The spiral will get you involved with the drama pulling you to the edge. What appears to be and what really is happening is what does it with you wanting action like now. Good one to get wound up and down with.
What a totally enjoyable, sweet, heartbreaking, heart-mending story that will have your emotions running up and down, hot and cold by the time you reach the end of the story about two extremely broken people and a second chance at having a happily ever after. She ran away from an abusive home life with her mother’s help and insistence and has lived the last few years in California, working as a waitress and auditioning for parts, hoping to catch a break and make it onto a Soap Opera. He had it all, the career, the money, the girl. But one terrible accident took it all away, leaving him to switch careers and carry a ton of guilt for something he had no control over.
The characters are wonderfully written and quite complex. Billie is beautiful, smart, and just the sweetest person you would ever want to meet. And Carter really wants to meet her. Him, well he’s gorgeous, smart and wants to protect not only her, but people in general. It’s his job…he’s a body guard and it’s her body that he really wants to guard.
This is truly a wonderful read and I hope that you will find it as enjoyable as I did. I highly recommend this read.
Great 2nd book to the series. The author has written a wonderful storyline and given us two great lead characters in Billie and Carter. They are strong, loveable characters and their story will keep you turning the pages.
Billie had a hard life growing up due to an abusive father and has a hard time trusting; mespecially men. Carter had a perfect life until one tragic swoop took everything away. Now he lives to protect others and protective streak especially wants to take care Billie. and be there for her.
The storyline is both heart wrenching and heart warming. It will have your emotions rolling as you read this wonderful 2nd chance story. I don’t want to give any more away, so I’ll just say how very much I enjoyed “Drift” and I highly recommend both this book and the series. 2 Thumbs Up for a great read!
Wow. What a fantastic read! I couldn’t put this down. At ALL!
This is the second book in the Guard Her series. You can read this as a stand alone. The first book is great also though, so you will want to go back and read that too.
This is definitely a series I can’t wait to read more of.
Billie, even though she is very young, she has survived a lot. She’s 21. She is the girl next door type. She is a little naive though, especially when it comes to the “Hollywood” auditions.
Carter is a great guy. He just carries way too much guilt for something that he couldn’t have changed.
These two are perfect for each other.
I don’t want to say much more. I would hate to give anything away.
This is a must read, so go one-click it NOW!
