This was a really good and authentic book about how the English see the Highlanders as savage beasts and the Highlanders see the English as unworthy cowards. These two discover all they thought about each other was wrong. I loved the conflict between Lord Flynn and everyone! The conflict between brothers until they finally understand each other. And the love between friends. This book made me feel like I was in the highlands myself. I recommend this book and this author!
Opposites Attract
When I first started reading Highlander’s Savior I realized I had read it before it is book two in a three book series by Barbara Bard. Highlander’s Honor, Highlander’s Savior and Highlander’s Captive. They are about two brothers Blair and Drew and their cousin Declan. And the three Sessenach women who tame their hearts. Rosemary, Sarah and Catherine. The story line flows easily from book to book. I did however read Highlander’s Savior first which is Drew’s story first and then went back and read them in order. In my opinion they can be read as stand alone but i recommend reading all three in order. They are all wonderful reads. I did feel at times the language seemed to change from thick Scottish brogue to English but I’m not an expert so don’t take my word for it. The only thought I had that would’ve made Highlander’s Savior better would have been for Deirdre to a little more evil.
Declan is the second full-length novel in this series by Barbara Bard. The first was Drew and a novella about his brother, Blair. Declan is the coming of age story of Blair and Drew’s cousin and takes place after the battle with the English in which the Highlanders emerged victorious. Declan is still beside himself with the knowledge that both of his cousins have fallen in love with English women. He is convinced it will lead to the Highlanders’ downfall. At Sarah’s (Drew’s wife) insistence, her friend Catherine is captured and brought to the castle and it is up to Declan to guard her.
In this story Declan becomes a man through a series of youthful misadventures that nearly cost him his life. Through his tribulations, he comes to understand how his cousins could love English women and how war is not the be-all and end-all he had believed it to be. Bard writes with a Scottish accent, making it seem authentic but she occasionally uses modem words, which take away from the authenticity. Some of the situations in which the characters find themselves are unrealistic but entertaining and move the plot along. If there is a criticism to be had it is that she makes us slog through pages of characters over thinking their situations.
Declan is an enjoyable read. I recommend it if you are attracted to Highlander fiction.
I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
These Highlander men are strong, powerful, sexy, smart and determined, with a huge heart. I loved how Drew got his strength from the love he felt instead of the anger. I loved the instant connection he and Sarah had. Sarah is such a strong, witty, beautiful and determined woman caught in a predicament that would cost her her life. She finds a way to run from the life she was mistakenly thrusted upon and right into the hands of the so called enemy. Her heart betrays her when she crosses paths with the dangerous highlander and she can’t stop it, as she nurses Drew back to help. The attraction and love at first sight is undeniable between Sarah and Drew. The conflict between the Scottish and the Englishmen ends up in war, and the deranged nobleman Lord Flynn must meet his fate. This book is full of action, war, adventure, trust, peace, hope, conflict, determination, strength, loss and love. Their story will keep you turing each page and wanting more. I LOVED IT!
