Cat’s used to moving, to never quite fitting in.But when her family moves to Valleyview, she’s not expecting what happens next.A serious accident, a coma, then the real strangeness began.Cat is faced with an entirely new set of powers as well as an ancient evil packaged as the high school hero. And if that wasn’t enough, she’ll also discover that her family is far more than what she’s been told.… than what she’s been told.

Thrilling storyline and did not want to put it down. Really enjoyed it.
I first came across H.M. Gooden’s writing with the Legends of the Fallen series. Frankly, I probably only tried that series (separately reviewed, and highly recommended, by the way) because it was co-authored by a favorite author of mine, J.A. Culican. It was so good, though, that I had to try some other books by Gooden to see if they held up. Boy oh boy am I ever glad I did because wow is this a talented lady. I’m loving everything by her that I’ve read so far. That’s certainly true of Dream of Darkness, The Stone Dragon and The Phoenix and the Witch, the first three (but effectively their own trilogy) in her The Rise of the Light series. These really are fantastic books. Also totally fun. Each of them is a superbly written, with a great plot that flows into a great overarching story arc, a perfect cast from Cat (and Evelyn, Robin, Mai, Vanessa, Zahara, et. al.) on down and perfect world-building (be it set in the author’s version of San Francisco or Scotland, etc.). Just fantastic stuff. Just wow. No surprise that I was engrossed in these books, and probably would’ve done nothing but binge read them if my husband had not forced me to come up for air and do other things periodically. Definitely recommended.
I really enjoyed this book and look forward to seeing how this series will evolve.
What a captivating story!! From page one I was sucked into the story and was glued there until the end. Not only did I love this book, I can’t wait for the next one to come out! The danger, the fear and the love in this good vs evil is a truly must read book!! Be sure you have your drink beside you because you won’t want to put this book down.
This book was fun and quirky. Cat being the main character is on an adventure to stop a demon like being with some other teenage girls who may have some unique powers. Overall I love the characters and the ability development through out the book and am excited for the next to come.
Really good!
This was good. Really, really good. It did start out a bit slow. And I think that was because at the start you already knew what was going to happen, but it took some time to get there. But once it was there: wow! Darkness. Light. Darkness trying to absorb the light. Light trying to brighten the darkness.
Cat has always been sensitive. But after the car accident, and the head trauma resulting from it, things have changed. Her senses are intensified. A thousand fold. Intriguing!
This is part 1. There’s more to come: I can’t wait! Book 2 and 3 are ready for me to one-click 🙂
I couldn’t put this book down and the pages flew by so quickly I was done before I knew it.
This story should be read by young and old alike because there is a message there for everyone! I believe every reader will want to change their behavior after reading this book.
This author was new to me but I’ll be looking for more from her. This is a new series so these characters will be back in the next installment and I for one am looking forward to their next adventures.
Kudos to H.M. Golden for a job well done!
I really loved following Cat on her journey to finding her powers. I really enjoy how the shied and other mythological creatures are incorporated into this story. This was really enjoyable to read and ti was really easy to get lost into this world. I’m afraid to say more because I might spoil something.
It was an unusual read to tell the truth. The story describes the move of a family and focuses on the life of the two sisters: Cat and Vanessa but from Cat’s perspective. When they moved into their new school Cat who has the ability to sense things feels really bad about the popular boy of the school. Who is he and why has Cat a bad feeling about him whereas everyone else likes him? After Cat’s accident, she discovers her powers and uses them for good. There is an evil lurking and Cat will need all the help she can get to battle this evil.
It was a fascinating read and I connected with the character instantly. It’s the second book I’ve read about auras and it left me wanting to learn more about the group’s adventures and powers.
If you’re after an exceptional read, this for you. Don’t forget to leave a review. H. M. Gooden
I loved the inclusion of Shakespeare in this book, especially the play that was chosen because A Midsummer Nights Dream is one of my favorites! I enjoyed the type of powers each character had because the powers are different then other fantasy characters that exist now. I’m excited to read the second one!
This book was pretty awesome. I really like the main character Cat. She wasn’t popular, liked her space, loved her family, and reading in bed. The description of the house and her reaction to it, is exactly how I would have felt. Bay window and a book = good life.
There were parts where I felt things were too easy, but it’s a short read and would have been difficult to add details without making the book too long. It is very nice to get in to a book and still be a quicker read. I can’t wait to read the second. I just love the character, and with the hint of what is in their future, I can’t forget about it.
Dream of Darkness follows a teenaged girl through the unsettling feelings and premonitions she gets. After just moving to a new town because their father transferred to a new job, sisters Vanessa and Cat are anxious as they try to find their place in a new school which has already been in session for a month. As her family history is revealed, Cat and Vanessa realize they are so much more than they ever imagined. It will be up to them and the help of their friends to stop the evil which is infiltrating their once-happy town. Once I began reading this book, I just kept turning the pages until I reached the end, all in one sitting. The story-telling is excellent, exciting, and mysterious with great pacing. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a great paranormal fantasy adventure.
