I received an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review. This is the first book I have read by Bob Goff and I wanted to read the book because I like to see what others see. In this book, I discovered you should have dreams and you should no what you want. That is not me but I read the book and decided to start deciding what I wanted and have a dream to have it come true. The book is helping me do this. The other thing about this book is I went into reading it with the idea it was just a self-help book but as soon as I started reading it, I laughed and told myself that I needed to take it more serious but as I kept reading and learning his journey, there were parts of the book that was really funny.
The book kept me reading and it was the story of his journey. I really enjoyed reading it and also liked the many things I learned. I will continue to practice what I learned but I have discovered in my life, that you read a book and you see what applies to your life now but when I read the same book further along in my journey, I can see and understand new things so I am sure this is a book to keep and keep on learning new things as my journey continues.
Dream Big was not what I was expecting and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed. I had high hopes at the beginning, as the book has a strong start, but I quickly learned that the introduction was pretty much all there is to it. The rest of the book felt like nothing more than personal stories and anecdotes, lacking the advice and sustenance that I was craving. I do have to say that the stories did help me better understand and connect with the author on a more personal level, and really helped me understand where he was coming from, but it didn’t go deeper than that.
This is the first book that I’ve read by this author and after reading the raving reviews I had high hopes, but it just fell flat for me. There were a few good points that were brought up, and got me thinking, but nothing was groundbreaking by any means, and was more general in nature, lacking the depth that I was hoping for. I really wanted to love Dream Big, and be further on my journey of self-discovery after reading it, but sadly I am still where I begun. I am giving it three stars because the writing is good, and I did enjoy the stories, but as far as personal growth, I am stunted and sad.
*I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Thomas Nelson through NetGalley. All views and opinions expressed are completely honest, and my own.
Dream Big: Know What You Want, Why You Want It, and What You’re Going to Do About It by Bob Goff is the author’s latest inspiring read. I think this book is a great read, especially if you have never read anything else by this author. Inspiration oozes from this author and his words never stop bringing a smile to my face. The back section of this book is full of questions to help the reader explore his or her own direction in life. Overall, it is a solid book. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.
Christian-Based Self-Help
Audiobook Review:
Before I requested this book from one of my favorite book review sites, I had not heard of the author. But I do find listening to self-help audiobooks enlightening, so I was curious about what he may have to say. I hadn’t realized before starting it that it was so very Christian. While I have been one in the past, I am not now. Because of these faith-based underpinnings, some of the author’s suggestions didn’t quite make sense for those of us who aren’t Christian. But I like the way he focused on just what the title says, dreaming big. What is it you truly want to do? What will give you a sense of purpose? How can you help the world? The author seems to have a plunge-ahead attitude that has certainly worked for him but wouldn’t necessarily work for everyone. He blends both the self-help aspects, directly helping the reader, and stories from his life that give deeper insight into a particular idea he has shared. The author narrates this book himself, so it feels like you were just having a conversation about his ideas with him as he shares his stories. If you like that kind of self-help book, with the author’s stories from his life as well as ideas that could apply to yours, and you are Christian or don’t mind reading a book that is so strongly one influenced by faith, you might find this book a fascinating read or listen.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
This is one of the best books that I have read for encouragement, no matter what stage of life you are in. With his signature anecdotes and humor, Bob Goff encourages people to use where you are now as a launching pad for where you really want to be. The book is filled with quotable insight and wisdom about how to go about figuring out what direction to go in and how to get where you want to go. I enjoyed the personal anecdotes and the view into the author’s own life and his struggles. I especially enjoyed how he made it a point to say that he just walked away from a successful law practice in order to concentrate on helping others, particularly the young children in Uganda. What a beautiful picture of what a Christian should do, if they can! This book would make a great gift for graduates, for those who find themselves unemployed and looking for the next thing and for those who just need encouragement to move forward out of the hole that we have dug ourselves into. I highly recommend this book to those who want to think positively about the future!

I always love when Bob narrates his own books. He is a dynamic story teller, and I enjoy reading his books for the delightful stories he tells. He did not disappoint in Dream Big. It was another book that, though segmented by “to do” steps, still flowed extremely well. It never felt choppy, despite the type of book you’re reading.
While we can squabble about the intricacies of Bob’s theology, the man has a love for people that I admire. Not to mention, his life is just so darn exciting! It’s just a little fun to live vicariously through his adventures.
Unfortunately, this did feel a bit too much like another aimless self-help book. I could find any number of books like this in the overflowing “live your best life” hype section. While Bob did put a bit of a Christian twist in this book, I wish he would have spent a bit more time in the cultivation of walking in obedience. Then again, does Bob ever stay anywhere very long? I’m not sure that would have been his style. All in all, while I liked the idea of this book on the surface, it didn’t land as well as I’d hoped. Bob will always be a dynamic speaker/narrator that has a message worth listening to. If you want more time with Bob, you’ll enjoy this book. If you’re looking for the meat of Bob’s mission, read Love Does.
I received a copy of this audiobook from the publisher, via NetGalley, for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
Having recently read and loved Everybody, Always, I was very excited to read a new book by Bob Goff. This book is very readable, and I could easily imagine myself attending a conference with Goff as the speaker, sharing his stories and insights. That said, I did think some things seemed repetitive and like Goff used 50 words to make sure he hammered home an idea that readers could get in 20 words. There are lots of good insights, but I also felt like it was a little disjointed. (But I think if you sat down and worked through the questions at the end, then it would be helpful and keep you on track.) I liked the tone, which was positive and encouraging. One thing that did stand out to me is that it seems like Goff was writing from a place of privilege–he owns boats and planes and lodges in Canada and stuff–and while he definitely has done a lot of good with his wealth, it could make his experiences hard for some readers to relate to. It’s easy to talk about quitting your law firm when you’ve got the money to do it; it’s not so easy to quit your job to pursue another ambition when you’re struggling to make it. Overall, I definitely liked the ideas and I’d love to listen to Goff as a motivational speaker.
3.5 stars.
