If anything to criticize, this was too short. I enjoyed the characters, setting, and the relationships described in this book.

Drake’s Rift is an entertaining bit of feel good space opera. The alien race which appears unexpectedly is a monstrous evil thing. No room for wasted sympathy on monsters who resemble giant rats. Kill ’em all before they kill and eat you. The commanders of the navy and the imperial marines are inexplicably competent and focused on saving the human race rather than politics. The same is true of the emperor and the civilian government. In fact the emperor and his government are so good that he reminds one of the old political science assertion that a benevolent dictatorship may be the best form of government. At least until the dictator dies.
The storyline obviously owes a lot to the Battle of Rorke’s Drift in the Anglo-Zulu War, the Battle of Trafalgar in the Napoleonic Wars and the various battles of the U.S. Marines in the South Pacific during WW2. In an afterword, the author specifically mentions Guadalcanal.
There are some few grammatical and editing errors throughout the novel. Some of them occur in dialogue so may be deliberate. It is a well told, fun story with a simple plot. A throwback to the sci-fi golden age of pulp magazines.
One of the best books I’ve read in years.
Good science fiction with some great characters and action.
Good fun read, plenty of action with a little subtle comedy mixed in. I have to get Intrepid now!
Good young adult read.
Decent story, told fairly well. The spelling of one of the major character’s name changed about halfway through the book. Poor editing!
Typical space soldiers like story. Interesting treatment of aliens
This type of book is not the norm for me. I bought it to read with my grandson. But my goodness what a great adventure! Great battle descriptions and characters. We both loved it!
Fantastic adventure sci-fi that will appeal to the military fiction fans as well
good read
Not so terrible that I didn’t finish it but hardly worth continuing to read any more. Shallow plot and characters.
This book would been 5 stars in the social world of the ’50s. There were smart women around, but they seemed to be used as the object of the affection of a male character. Given that it is set far in the future when Man has gone to the stars, its a bit painful to paint these strong female characters as needing protection and the male characters commenting about a woman’s place being in the kitchen.
This really distracted me from what otherwise was a decent mashup of a sc-fi war book.
Easy, entertaining read. Likable characters and good military action. I cry about everything, so tear-jerker might be stretching it. Lip-quiverer is more apt.
Awesome read
This was a fun story, but it is packed full of cliches and ridiculously sappy events. The editing, or lack thereof, is the real problem. I don’t know when I’ve seen such bad editing.
Drake’s Rift was an entertaining read and the characters were developed to make the book a better than usual science fiction story.
nonstop space opera
