Someone is killing dragons.
And someone is trying to start a civil war among the fae.
As a pest controller with a soft heart, Kyra already has an apartment full of rescues, including a basilisk, a banshee and even a pygmy kraken. When she finds an abandoned baby dragon, she doesn’t want to bring him home. But until she can hunt down the killer and possibly stop a war, she’s on babysitting duty. babysitting duty.

A well written book with an interesting story line. The characters are strong and the story flows quickly and smoothly. I enjoyed reading this story.
Dragons Don’t Eat Meat
Kyra has a menagerie that she has collected through her work, Valkyrie Pest Control. She takes in creatures that need to be rehomed. Her apartment is above her ‘store front’. She lived with a Banshee and an assortment of cute and scary things. Kyra cannot seem to keep an assistant and bookkeeper. She is on a new job when she runs into some poachers in a graveyard with collared dragons. She frees almost all of the dragons, but the baby Ollie. She tried to fend off the poachers but one gets nicked by her sword. This starts and adventure to return the baby dragon to his thunder. Along the way she runs into her crush from the previous year a gargoyle, Mason. There is SO much going on in this book, it is a page-turner. I enjoyed this book about Kyra and Mason and can’t wait for MORE!
This was such a fun and sinister book. Kyra is a half Valkyrie that owns a Pest Control business. She handles removing paranormal pests and re-homing them if possible. She also is a pushover for displaced creatures that cannot take care of themselves or has no place to return to like her pygmy kracken who is so cute and ends up in such odd places, plus numerous others. Oh yes, she also has a banshee living in the closet. So when she saves a thunder of dragons from poachers she ends up with a baby dragon, Ollie, in her care. There is Mason, a cursed gargoyle, Angus, another gargoyle also called a green man, a fire dirvish, Ollie and Kyra searching for Ollie’s thunder. I can’t express how much I enjoyed this book. There is so much going on and they run into all kinds of mysterious situations. Angus is hilarious! He gets his metaphors all mixed up, but he gets his point across. “That’s the fork that broke the camel’s back”. Do yourself a favor and read this book. You won’t be disappointed! I requested a free advanced reader copy and am under no obligation to leave this review.
Enjoyed this book from start to finish, great characters and story line, can’t wait for book two to come out.
I found this book to be entertaining. I don’t think I have ever read about gargoyles or someone who catches otherworldly creatures and keeps them. I found the humor between the main characters intriguing. I absolutely loved Ollie he was so adorable, I wish I had one of my own. The vampires we different from any I have read before. The Fae of course can only be written one way and that is kind of stuck up. The wards are a novel concept and magic once again flourishing on the earth is great. I will look for the next book by this author with eagerness.
I received a free copy of this book from the author for an honest review.
This was a fun easy read. The main character is original, I mean a Valkyrie who does pest control, when she’s not adopting them. The dialogue is good and the interplay between the characters keeps the book moving along at a good pace. I’ve purchased the second and third books in the series.
Dragons Don’t Eat Meat by Kim McDougall is Book 1 in the Valkyrie Bestiary series. This is a unique world that is well developed. Kyra is a great character who saves animals/creatures of all kinds and gives them homes if needed. She saves Ollie, a baby dragon, that takes her on a journey to find his mother. This is a well written story with interesting characters, plenty of action, and it draws you in and keeps you turning pages to the end. Loved the storyline and Ollie. Jacoby, a dervish, was also a favorite and looking forward to seeing him in future books. Received an ARC and this is my voluntary review.
This is my first book by the author. I read the blurb and saw the blue dragon Ollie on the cover and couldn’t pass it up.
I was drawn into Kyra’s world as she cares for her creatures and stumbles across a scene that turns into so much more than what it first seems.
I was thrown the first time I turned the page and saw the blog post in the story, but grew to love it.
One woman has the strength to stand up for what is right and makes a difference. I enjoyed the supporting characters. They were well developed with their own personalities and speech patterns. You could tell who was talking just by reading the dialogue. Jacoby grew on my just like he did Kyra.
I am looking forward to reading the next story in the series.
‘Dragons Don’t Eat Meat’ is book one in Kim McDougall’s Valkyrie Bestiary series.
Kyra Greene is a Valkyrie that owns “Valkyrie Pest Control”, she has too big of a heart and is constantly taking in stray creatures, her office/home is full of different types and sizes of beings ranging from a Pygmy Kraken named Hunter to a Banshee named Gita. When Kyra is out releasing her latest catch a Moon-Frog she stumbles across a Thunder of Dragons thought to be extinct, and she finders herself taking in a baby Dragon. But the Dragons are only a small problem, turns out that the Dragons were being used to find something that could bring upon another War.
After reading the novella ‘Three Half Goats Gruff’ I was hooked to this world of magical creatures and beings. But what really sucked me in was the name of the series having Valkyrie in it, I love these warrior woman and as soon as I see anything about them I must read it. Honestly though Ms McDougall has done a wonderful job bringing this magical world to life.
I was hooked from the very beginning right to the end. I hungrily devoured this book, absorbing each and every word. This book takes you on one heck of a journey, with so much adventure, surprises, revelations, secrets, mystery, betrayal, heartache, angst and awe moments. You will experience each and every emotion in this jam packed book.
I’m looking forward to reading book two ‘Dervishes Don’t Dance’, I need to know how things are going for Kyra, Gita, Mason, Angus, Ollie, Hunter, Clarence and Jocoby.
This book for me is 3.5 stars, I really tried to figure out how to make it into a 4 star rating but in keeping true to how I rate books I couldn’t rate it any higher. If it’s a book I stay awake during the night to read or I go and hide from everyone else to finish then it’s usually a 4 to 5 star for me. I put this book down for a couple of weeks and read about 10 books in between so that lets me know that while it had some points that drew me in, I wasn’t fully as invested as I would have liked.
I did like Kyra and her big mushy heart, saving and housing all of those magical critters. Her kick butt attitude and willingness to stand up for the underdog really endeared her to me.
I loved Ollie, I mean who wouldn’t love a baby dragon to care about. Jacoby had his quirks but his heart and trying to do the right thing sometimes didn’t always work out right, but he still got a piece of my heart.
Mason the gargoyle and Kyra’s relationship is supposed to be a slow burn but for me it was more on an annoyance and at times I felt like he was playing games with her more than anything.
The story meandered a bit too much at times to keep my interest, plus the blogs, which made no sense to me, was more of a distraction. When I would finally connect with the story and things were picking up I would turn the page and run into another blog, which would throw me back out of the story.
There was a lot to recommend it which is why I tried to justify rating it higher but for me there were several elements that needed a bit more focus and direction that this story lacked.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Kyra and her captain take a journey to find a dragon clan for baby Ollie. And they meet some interesting creatures and decided nope on some of them
Kyra the MC is amazing in this story. This book will make you laugh, cry, love and growl with frustration and I loved it all. If you want a book to give you a belly laugh while reading this is the book for you. I loved it and I want to be a supe pest controller. I am 1st in line when an opening shows up LOL. I recommend this story. I was given a free copy of this book at my request and this is my honest review.
