A new hero emerges in a divided world as one of sci-fi’s most beloved series—Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern—relaunches with this original adventure from Anne’s daughter, Gigi McCaffrey. In honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the Dragonriders of Pern series, Gigi does her mother proud, adding to the family tradition of spinning unputdownable tales that recount the adventures of the brave … adventures of the brave inhabitants of a distant planet who battle the pitiless adversary known as Thread.
The last time Thread attacked Pern, the world was unprepared for the fight—until the Oldtimers appeared. These courageous dragonriders arrived from the past, traveling four hundred years to help their descendants survive. But the collision of past and present took its toll. While most of the displaced rescuers adapted to their new reality, others could not abide the jarring change and found themselves in soul-crushing exile, where unhappiness and resentment seethed.
Piemur, a journeyman harper, also feels displaced, cast adrift by the loss of his spectacular boyhood voice and uncertain of his future. But when the Masterharper of Pern sees promise in the young man and sends him undercover among the exiled Oldtimers, Piemur senses the looming catastrophe that threatens the balance of power between the Weyrs and Holds of Pern.
When the unthinkable happens, Piemur must rise to the challenge to avert disaster and restore honor to the dragons and dragonriders of Pern. Because now, in a world already beset by Thread, another, more insidious danger looms: For the first time in living memory, dragons may be on the verge of fighting dragons.

What did I love? Everything!
Gigi McCaffrey has done an excellent job of adding to the Pern series. Piemur as he appeared in the earlier books was a mischievous and loyal member of the Harper crafthall. When he lost his wonderful boyish singing voice, he was at loose ends because he identified himself so strongly with his voice. Masterharper Robinton however recognized that Piemur had other harper traits that he could use in the Southern Weyr where there was unrest among the Oldtimers who had come many turns into the future to save Pern at a critical time. How Piemur comes to recognize his own value and how he helps the Oldtimers find a place of their own make this a wonderful addition to the world of Pern.
Gigi does a great job in the tradition of Pern. Any Pern lover will thoroughly enjoy this novel.
I love everything Pern and this book didn’t disappoint.
Gigi McCaffrey’s writing style is more like her mother Anne. Enjoyed picking up Piemur’s story after all these years!
Love all of the Pern series by mother son and daughter great story and characters realistic world building
I have loved Anne McCaffrey for years. Todd McCaffrey’s books were okay and technically good enough; Gigi McCaffrey almost felt like her mom was writing again. I hope Gigi keeps writing because I miss spending time with the characters her mother brought to life. If you’ve never traveled to Pern, Gigi is a great way to start the journey. She stayed pretty safe, telling a story I knew from a different perspective, something her mother did often. I hope she ventures off into new stories and new characters. Gigi has the potential to bring new dimensions to Pern
mccaffrey, pern … two excellent reasons to buy and read this book!
A great adventure in the established world of Pern. This fills in the storyline and expands the character quite well.
Reading this book, felt like being home. I have missed Anne McCaffrey’s world of Pern. It was great to find Gigi McCaffrey can write in the same world with out a single wrong step. It’s always good to revisit and see how a different character experienced events. Thank you Gigi McCaffrey. Please continue to write.
McCaffrey’s successors continue a fine tradition and do justice to her world.
The magic of the mythos of Pern continues even after Anne’s passing. Delightful! Bring us more!
I love the Dragonrider series originally by Anne McCaffrey and enjoyed the continuation of the series with her son Todd and now newest by her daughter. A good read for those of us that feel a connection to Pern and the characters, old and new.
The author remains true to her mother’s story and writing.
I love all books Pern so there’s no bad story!
I was a quick and pleasant read.
Consistent with the earlier books!
My book reviews can be found on GoodReads
There is nothing in the book I didn’t love. I’ve read it many times, it’s a re-read for me at least once a year.
I really loved Gigi McCaffrey’s take on Pern! I have been a fan of dragons since I read Dragon Quest, years and years ago. This book made me love Pern again in a way that Todd’s books didn’t. I hope Gigi writes some more!
this is the series that started the dragon genre. i have reread it numerous times, and i just fall right into the world of pern with the first sentence.
