I have a real complaints about H. M. Gooden’s The Rise of the Light Series. They’re too darn addictive. I loved the first three books, which really work perfectly as a standalone trilogy (and which I separately reviewed). The next two, Dragons Are Forever & The Raven and The Witch Hunter (Books 4&5), are spinoffs. Therefore I should’ve been able to control myself, right? Right?! Nope. Too darn addictive. Book 4 should’ve been simple enough. I mean newly engaged Miri and Jake off to see her future in-laws in Norway. No biggie, right? Nope. Loads of insanity ensues – and loads of fun to read. Ditto in book 5, though at least rising hit TV star Vanessa has that raven shifter thing going for her so you know things aren’t ho-hum from the start. Bottom line though is that both books are fun book and superbly written, and each has a great plot, a perfect cast and perfect world-building. Pretty darn great, if you ask me. Pretty definitely recommended, too.
The book takes you along the journey of newly engaged lovers traveling to Norway to meet the future in-laws. At its core, it is a love story, a romance. But it’s not that simple. The main characters have special powers and an animal alter-ego, in this case, dragons. The journey exposes the lovers to several perils which they must overcome; the kraken; an evil-dead/zombie sailor type called a draughr; trolls; a nyk. Each encounter exposes more layers to the hidden fairy-tale world that coexists with the human one.
It was an easy read and the text flowed well, and although the plot was not very deep, it keeps the reader interested to find out what happens next. The characters are very engaging and lovable, and in many ways resemble the friends anybody might have had during their 20s. Overall: a very enjoyable light read.
This prequel was a nice introduction to the universe and to meeting Mai and Jake. The beginning was a bit slow, and took a while to get into, but once you get past the first few chapters it really picks up. Am definitely going to start the series from the beginning to continue their story 🙂
Great Prequel to a series. I now want to read the rest of the books that are out for this series. It was a little slow at the beginning for me but it picked up after awhile. I thoroughly enjoyed it, I’m going to get book 1 to read now and find out what happens after this one!
This was the first story I have read by this author. And because this story deals in a world that’s already been established, I kept feeling as though I was missing critical pieces of the backstory.
The story was still enjoyable, and the creatures that Mai and Jake encountered were unique, which I really appreciate. I do wish this story was fleshed out a little more, but it was still an entertaining read.
After reading Dream of Darkness by H. M. Gooden I was so happy to have this new story arc. In this paranormal shifter romance we get to follow familiar characters from ‘The Rise of Light’ series, now older, in exciting new adventures.
Mai and Jake are engaged and off to Norway to meet the parents. Excitement and love whirl them across the globe only to find myth and legend come to life.
This was an entertaining, quick read with a great storyline and magic. The strong female protagonists, amazing myths, legends, and traditions make the scenes come alive on the page. I found this to be a wonderful introduction to the series and can’t wait to read more!
This book just took me till about halfway thru till it kept my interest. I felt like I was missing info while reading like maybe there was a book I hadn’t read related to this. But it picked up its pace and was excellent once I got into it. Can’t wait to find out how everything works out!
