Magic runs through her veins, tempting her to use it, but Ruby isn’t sure how to control her new powers…until Ty, a dangerously handsome man from another world, spots her and identifies her as a witch. He offers some answers, but they come with a cost. Not only does using her powers make her a target to … does using her powers make her a target to others trying to steal her magic and slay her pet dragon, but each act of magic must be balanced—and magic takes whatever it wants.
Is all the chaos caused by casting a few spells to ruin her ex-boyfriend’s perfect skin worth it?

Until next time… Happy Reading!
I truly enjoyed this story! I connected with the lead character in her quest to form new relationships while dealing with heartbreak and grief in an unfamiliar environment. Simultaneously, she was able to discover her abilities as a witch and was rejoined with an old friend, her dragon. There was an unexpected twist with one of the main characters, and an ending I did not expect either. It can be read as a standalone, but I personally would love to read more from this author!
Ruby lost her mother a year ago, just started her first year of college, her boyfriend of three years dumped her the day before their first day of college after she decided to follow him to an out of state college, then after she goes on three “sort of ” dates with a new guy, she’s already planning a permanent relationship? The lead character acts more like a young teenager than a young adult. This isn’t for me, I can’t get past how childish the “heroine” is.
Dragons Are A Girl’s Best Friend by Joynell Schultz is the first book in the Quarter Witch Chronicles. This book is such a fun read with a wonderful cast of characters that include a young witch named Ruby, a dragon named Luke she’s been friends with since childhood, and two young men Liam and Ty she meets while attending college. This book is full of mystery, excitement, adventure, and romance. I loved reading this book and am anxiously awaiting the next installment of The Quarter Witch Chronicles to find out what happens to Ruby and her friends next. Dragons Are A Girl’s Best Friend is awesome!
This was a delightful book, very unique in so many ways, with a lot of twists and turns before the ending. Well Done Ms. Schultz! I look forward to the rest of the series!
Wow…I sat down to read some of this book, but didn’t put it down it until I was done. Being the first book in this new series, it really delivered! Great characters (I love Luke), humor and a story that drew me in right from the start. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
This is the first book in a series. I enjoyed this story because the characters are fun and quirky. This is the first story by Joynell Schultz and it was enjoyable. This is a young adult story that has magic, other dimensions, and of course dragons. One of the things that was refreshing is that it would be rated PG-13.
Ruby is starting college. Just months ago she lost her mother to breast cancer. She never knew her dad. Just before she died, her mother told her that her father was half witch and left a talisman for Ruby and she should always have it with her. It was like a coin with a dragon image on one side and writing on the other. Every time she tried to do any magic, it didn’t work. Sometimes it would even go wonky. She is selling the huge Victorian house that she grew up in because as a college student, she couldn’t afford it and school. She has her high school boyfriend, Geoff, who was supportive during the time her mother was ill and through her passing. She was going to the same school he is so they could be together and the school was two hours away from home. Another reason to sell the house. Of course, nothing every goes right all the time. Once they get to school, before the first day, Geoff breaks up with her. He tells her that he wanted to break up a year before but her mother got ill. So great, she gets to start college, at the college she went to to be near her boyfriend, sharing some of the same classes with him, when he dumps her so he can have the full college experiences like parties and other girls. This poor girl can’t help feeling that everyone leaves her. Even her imaginary friend when she was little left her. She had an imaginary friend dragon. Golden body, red glowing eyes about the size of a fat cat. Well, everyone leaves her. Of course on her first day of classes, in her first class, a very good looking guy a few years older than her sits right down with her and chats her up.
Liam is in his junior year of college, and is taking more classes because he switched majors, so yes he is taking a freshman class. On the first day of class, he spots this beautiful girl and sits next to her. Since they were there 15 minutes before class starts, they had plenty of time to chat. They made plans to meet at the college coffee house the next day. Then they go do an underage club to dance. He is very respectful to Ruby and treats her special. He protects her from when Glenn wants to talk with her and she doesn’t want to.
Ty is a guy that Ruby keeps running into, literally run into. First it was when she was leaving classes, then again at the underage club and then when she was going to do her laundry. He knows she is a witch because at the club, she spilled her drink all over both of their shirts staining them red. She magicly cleaned his shirt, totally cleaned it.
This story could have been a stand alone, because there wasn’t really any cliff hanger to it. Well, there is the huge purple dragon she saw, but maybe she didn’t really see it at all.

Such a fun, entertaining and engaging coming of age story with a exciting magical twist and emotionally thrilling turns… a great read from beginning to end that will leave you wanting more and looking forward to our next adventure with these intriguing charters.
I so love dragon stories. As soon as I received it I had to start & finished it in the middle of the night. This one is really cute & fun to read. Lots of interesting things happen that I would never think up. This author is one of my favorites because she has such imagination. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.
Well done Ms. Johnson. Keep up the good work.

This was a great book. I loved the characters. They were compelling and worked well together. The storyline held my attention and I did not want to put it down. Once I started I read it all the way through. Great story!!
Book one in a new series called Quarter Witch Chronicles and I want to read the next book. The storyline held my interest and the story flows smoothly from one page to the other. A woman finding out she is a witch, two hot men, and one cute dragon. I enjoyed reading this book. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Ruby is pretty much a normal girl…except….
As her mother lay dying from cancer, she told her that she, Ruby, is a witch and has magical powers.
The powers allegedly come from her half witch father- a man she was told abandoned Ruby and her mother when Ruby was a baby.
Luke is her childhood make believe best friend. A cute little dragon. Is he really imaginary?
Geoff is the boyfriend of three years who has stood beside her through the illness and death of her mother. A stand up guy? Time will tell when they go off to college together.
Liam is an apparently nice guy who has lost his parents. Perhaps more to his story as well.
When dragon Luke reappears, Ruby also meets someone Luke is afraid of. A dragon hunter named Ty.
Much of the world and people around Ruby seems to be not as she thought. One thing seems true: home is less a place than a feeling.
Can Ruby trust her heart, her magic and her instincts and find her way home? Can she embrace new friends and family? Or is she as alone as she fears?
Great KU read!

Ruby’s mom died and left her the huge Victorian house that she was selling. Her boyfriend, Geoff, was going to college out-of-state, so she decided to do that too. Not able to afford both the large house and tuition out-of-state, she decided to sell. Salvation Army volunteers were moving out all the furniture and things, but making a mess of it until she couldn’t stand the memories anymore and kicked them out. Her goals now were to go off to college, begin life as an adult, and to learn how to use the “quarter-witch” of magic within her which never seemed to work. Her half-witch father had walked out on her mother long ago, but he asked her to give Ruby a magical silver coin to help her skills, telling her mother to warn Ruby that there were consequences to using magic.
When Geoff stopped by her tiny room at the dorm, he announced that they should break up! He had been the one that helped her keep it together when her mom died. She had moved out-of-state for him and sold her mom’s house to be with him! Was he serious about splitting up? She asked him to leave. It was a big campus – she could probably avoid him! Except that she had coordinated their first and last classes of the day to be together! Now she had to watch him flirting with other females – her pencil snapping in half might indicate that she wasn’t totally over him yet.
In the shadows under the professor’s table, she saw red glowing eyes staring out! They were Luke’s eyes, her imaginary dragon friend from childhood! Then the eyes faded. Was she going crazy? A voice asked if the seat next to her was taken and Liam introduced himself and sat down. He was a Junior. The girl behind Ruby introduced herself as Kat, and the three of them set a date to meet for coffee the next day. Day 1 of her Freshman year, and she already had TWO friends – and one was kind of cute!
At the coffee shop, Kat and Liam hadn’t arrived yet – but Geoff was there! The redhead from class sat with him, he moved beside her, and he kissed her! Thinking the redhead wouldn’t mess with him if she had seen his pimply skin in his high school days, Ruby played with the silver coin in her pocket that helped her magic work, and she wished Geoff’s perfect skin goodbye. Liam arrived and they went up to order coffee. He noticed her glancing at Geoff and told her next time Geoff looked her way, Liam would kiss her. Well, that certainly worked! Geoff scowled and Ruby thoroughly enjoyed the much better kissing Liam provided!
Entering class, Ruby saw red splotches on Geoff’s face! It was for the wrong reason, but she was pleased that her magic worked. She glanced over to an open door in the lecture hall and saw Luke, her imaginary dragon, was back! He went into a closet and something crashed loudly and everyone jumped! Um, was he imaginary or not?? She turned around and saw a man leaving – was Luke hiding from someone? The professor opened the closet, picked up a fallen podium, and no one at all seemed to see the golden dragon in there! Ruby got up and ran out of the room, running right into a man with blond hair. Both his hair and clothes were dirty and looked as if he were dressed for a medieval period play. Was this who scared Luke? What is happening that her imaginary childhood friend showed up again? What’s going on with Liam?
This is a very intriguing story right from the start. We meet a quarter-witch who has not mastered his skills, so anything can happen! She moves out-of-state with her boyfriend who dumps her as soon as they start classes! And some interesting people (and maybe even imaginary ones?) enter her life. The story line keeps things fast-moving and tense as the reader looks for answers as to what is going on. Grab your copy and keep up with this first book of the new series – it’s going to be a good one!
It’s hard just starting college, moving away from home and leaving everything familiar behind. But that is what Ruby does. She also sees her childhood imaginary friend, a dragon named Luke. And she has magic! Sometimes…
This story is fun, original, a fast, great story. I loved it and can’t wait for book 2.
