I absolutely love all McCaffrey’s books. Dargonflight first and totally awesome. One of those books that’s impossible to put down once you start reading it.
Just love the whole world of Pern. It would be such a blast to ride a dragon. I love the interaction of all the dragon riders, and and the people that live in halls.
The coming together of all the people planet wide, to fight a vicious grub, that eats everything. Just a great romp
This is just the beginning. You have to read all three. It just gets better with every book. Each main character is developed and you can visualize the locale and the interactions between the people and their dragons.
When I was young, I was used to reading stories like fairy tales and knight stories in which the dragon was an evil entity who ate beautiful damsels and killed brave knights. I always thought the dragons were getting a bad rap. What a relief to read a series where the dragons are the protagonists, sharing work and telepathic conversation with people to keep their planet safe. Furthermore they are not magical creatures, but developed with scientific methods as required by the situation. This book turned me into a lifelong Anne McCaffrey fan.
When you think of dragons, typically what comes to mind is wizards and magic and knights in armor. Dragonflight is not that. McCaffrey takes the dragon element and turns it sci-fi, turning that stereotype on its ear, making them telepathic, not magical. The idea of dragons being on another planet and being domesticated to protect the planet was a complete shock for me (coming at it cold) but it had a profound impact on me as a writer: don’t be afraid to take something and turn it around. Lessa is a great character, a strong woman who takes the role of heroine to a new place. Bottom line, after reading this, you’ll want to be a dragonrider. Highly recommended!
“Why did you become a writer, Terry?”
“Two words: Anne McCaffrey.”
Anne McCaffrey’s world of Pern comes alive with memorable characters and great storytelling. I think I have read every book in the series at least twice. I first learned about the series as a young adult and continue to love these books. Dragonflight is a great reading experience! Very entertaining and fun to read.
This book helped inspire me to be a writer. Everything about it delights me. I love the heroine, the hero, the world, the DRAGONS, and the series that this book begins.
LOVE IT, will read her other books!!!
The queen of dragon books, this author takes you to another world, literally and figuratively. Love all her books and enjoyed going back to the first one again. You will not be disappointed. You can see why today’s writers of dragon lore learned from the best!
In my opinion, Anne McAffery is one of the best story weavers of our time!! I have been visiting the world of Pern since I was 16 years old!! At 68 years old, I’m still an enchanted fan!
Anne’s complete Dragonrider series is one of my all-time favorite book series.
i have been reading this book since I was 10 years old or so. My children have read these books too. No going wrong with Pern.
Dragons are my favorite mythical creature yet they are almost always portrayed as the bad guys. Is this book they are the good guys and communicate with their partners, humans, caring what happens to them. They help drive the story as a hero/heroine!
Dragonflight (Dragonriders of Pern #1) by Anne McCaffrey – So I thought that I would have no trouble starting this series here because I read the Harper Hall books. I wanted to start with familiar characters not at the beginning. I would have been quite lost if I hadn’t read the Harper Hall series because they talk about teaching ballads. So my advice: Don’t start here. Start this series chronologically at Dragonsdawn. But absolutely read these books! Once I figured out when we were — Dragonperfection!! Happy Reading!
The beginning of Lessa’s story. The Dragon riders of Pern is a very rich background,
McCaffrey’s Pern is one of my favorite planets to visit.
I love and have read all of McCaffrey’s dragon books
This is the first Anne McCaffrey book that I ever read. Loved it so much that I continued to read her books for years!
Fantastic. Enjoyable. Great Fantasy
