This trilogy has wonderful characters who are both heroic and flawed in some aspect. Ava Richardson writes so we not only feel like we know where the main character is coming from, but when they grow, we want to cheer for them.

Narissea (“Nari”) was on a solo hunt to prove herself in her Three-Day Testing. She was ready to take down the animal hidden from her when it stood up and Dagan Mar, the Chief Overseer of the Mines of Masaka, yelled, “Slave!” He had a whip that he had beaten her with many times and his face was filled with rage. She screamed and sat up in her bed, kicking off the blankets.
Narissea is, in fact, preparing to lead Inyene’s brother, Abioye, and her fellow Dava slaves, through the wilds of the Plains to claim the Stone Crown which gives the wearer the ability to command all dragons and take the High Throne that rules over the three kingdoms. Nari has no choice, even though this could lead to war, and will be killed if she doesn’t obey. But danger is close as mercenaries also hunt for the crown for an unknown patron. When they attack Nari’s expedition, the map gets torn into two pieces. That means that in order to continue her quest, Nari only has as her guide her memories of the map’s landmarks and the stories passed down by the elders.
Untrusting, Inyene sends her mechanical dragons to watch them. Nari’s decisions could change things in her world, but no matter what, she will do what she must to save her people.
