It takes a special kind of rogue to spy on an enemy. A new series by USA Today bestselling author, Sarah K. L. Wilson. I’m in a bit of a jam.The basics? I have about a hundred magic users chasing me, three people depending on me to help them out and some super weird markings on my arms. They say this city is full of deception, that it will eat an honest man alive.Good thing I’m no honest man. … that it will eat an honest man alive.
Good thing I’m no honest man.
I’m just a street-wise kid with a very serious dragon, and she’ll get me out of any trouble I fall into. Right, Saboraak?
Perfect for dragon lovers everywhere, DRAGON CHAMELEON: ROGUE is episode one of a brand new series set in the world of DRAGON SCHOOL. It’s the perfect beginning for readers new to this fantasy world but still contains hidden gems for long-time fans. Enjoy!

“Compassion means taking responsibility for all other people. …It will make you a fuller person.”
SETTING: Now things are starting to hop! Or should I say FLY! This episode is full of rescues, new friends and the budding relationship between Tor and Saboraak, his new dragon. Tor starts his journey to manhood, with the female dragon giving sage advise to Tor: what kind of person he is and needs to become; how to put others ahead of himself; and, most importantly, those whom he can trust implicitly-his own dragon! These life-lessons are good reminders to all of us. For example:
“Compassion means taking responsibility for all other people. …It will make you a fuller person.”
Meanwhile, the Magikas are hot on their trail, and Tor and Saboraak are run to exhaustion trying to flee to what they think will be their safe haven. They also meet new friends on the way, for whom Tor must learn his compassion lessons. What role they will play is this story is not yet clear, as they are literally ‘picked up’ in this episode.
CRITIQUE: The story is beginning to take shape, and Tor is becoming more mature and responsible, albeit a bit grudgingly. The end is not yet clear, and Tor has not yet come to appreciate the gifts of a book and a necklace that he has been given. (Neither do we at this point.) However, by the end of this episode, he is developing an appreciation for the loyalty of his dragon. I look forward to seeing where Ms. Wilson takes us on this journey.
Dragon Chameleon: Paths of Deception is the second book in in Sarah K L Wilson’s new series which follows on from the wonderful Dragon School Series. Tor and Saboraak have to trust each other as their mission is not as straightforward as they thought. I love the relationship between these two .. Saboraak is snarky and superior whilst Tor is cocky and hasn’t a clue. The growing trust is a great part of this story. I already love this series and cannot wait for the next book. I thoroughly recommend this book and series.
Seems like no matter what scrape or life threatening situation Tor finds himself in, his dragon, Saboraak is there to pull his read end out of the fire…literally at times. Having rescued two girls and an unknown friend (or foe), from Shabren the Violet, Tor and his cohorts are now trying to escape the pursuit of the Magikas. Their plans don’t always go as expected, but there is always Saboraak to the rescue. Book 2 of the Dragon Chameleon series is a fun, outrageous dash from peril to peril, with Tor always on the cutting edge of getting himself or others caught or killed. Love this series and am excited Ms. Wilson decided to continue the dragon story line from Dragon School.
I received an ARC copy of this book from the author. I leave this review because I would hope others would want to join the escapades of Tor and Saboraak.
I have been binge-happy lately, getting really into book series and not able to put them down. Probably at the top of my list of binge-worthy series is Sarah K. L. Wilson’s Dragon Chameleon series, set in the same world as her fabulous Dragon School series (which I’ve re-read more than once and highly recommend). I’d read one of the Dragon Chameleon books before and loved it. When the latest, City of Ice, came out I just had to start from book 1 and binge read through the whole thing. That book 1, Rogue’s Quest, was the perfect way to start a sequel series, placing it clearly in the works of Dragon School (but in a way that totally works as an intro that world for readers who don’t plan on reading that series) while introducing Tor (a wonderful scoundrel of a character) and – most importantly – his dragon partner, Saboraak, the dragon chameleon and the spy mission handed over to them by Hubric. I love the totally different “voices” of these characters and, especially, how Tor and Saboraak interact. Added to a pretty darn exciting book this definitely drew me in and started a new addiction. That addiction only worsened with book 2, Paths of Deception. The action heated up with this one bit, to me even more importantly, the character development went into overdrive. It was a total pleasure watching Tor evolve over the course of these pages – an evolution that was perfectly done. Added to yet another great plot and a cast of great characters (especially Shabren, Bataar, and sisters Zyla and Zin) and I couldn’t wait to dive into book 3. Luckily I had that book 3 (the reason I started my binge read, after all). City of Ice was, quite simply, superb. Things are looking pretty bad for Tor, Saboraak and their friends (especially Bataar) but I wouldn’t count them out. Once again an exciting story, and once again loads of fun watching Tor develop into a superb character. Really that character development, and the character building of the cast in general, is what made this book and the entire series so special. It already had a great story arc and individual book plots full of action, adventure, wild twists and turn and pretty darn nicely done humor. I’d have given the series a five based on that, but the character development is what makes this series truly exceptional. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. Each of the books in this series definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that this series is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. A recommendation – and five stars – that I’m happy to apply to this second book in the series.
Tor, Saboraak, Zyla, Zin and Bataar are heading to what they hope is safety. There are injuries and they get separated. Nothing ever really goes smoothly does it? I am loving this story. Tor and Saboraak are awesome together and I love they conversations. Can’t wait to see what this group gets up to next.
Saboraak’s the best!
Saboraak, the Chameleon Dragon, can be quite moralizing. One of her useful lessons: “Compassion is the door to wisdom”. Tor needs that, but doesn’t always appreciate it 😉 Sometimes she can be a bit too serious, but Tor is the opposite, so they complement each other very well. Tor is independent and confident, although when it comes to girls and emotions: not so much. Soft-hearted Saboraak is the one I liked best. Together with Bataar, Zyla and Zin they embark on an adventure. Fast-paced and exciting, this story was well worth my time.
I liked the constant bickering between Tor and Saboraak. Quote (I added the names to make it clearer):
Tor: “I wasn’t panicking.”
Saboraak: “What would you call those little breathing attacks?”
Tor: “Realism.”
