Gretchen Archer has joined my very special list of authors to whom I owe an unpayable, incalculable debt of gratitude for being 100% GUARANTEED to make me laugh, whether times are dreadful, fabulous, or anywhere in between. Double Whammy is not only funny, but over-the-top clever, and a terrific plot. Charmed one minute, howling with laughter the next, and deeply touched the minute after that. Repeat!
It’s that good. Give it a try. Have some laughs and enjoy the cleverness. Fall in love with Davis Way.
It’s a fun ride.
And hey, are those pineapple recipes?
This is a must-read. Davis Way is someone I would want for a pal. She is smart and has a quick wit. The characters are believable and well developed. The story is fun and full of twists and turns. Davis Way leaves her hometown for an interesting job in a casino, undercover security. Trust me. This is a great book. I am so glad there are two more books. If you like fun and interesting stories, you’ll love this book. If you are a fan of Corner Gas’s Wanda Dollard, you’ll love Davis Way. Thank you, Gretchen, for introducing me to Davis Way!
This book was a page turner from the beginning. I literally couldn’t put it down. The quirky characters and fun storyline kept me engrossed from beginning to end. If you enjoy Janet Evanovich books, you will love this. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
What a hoot of a storyline! Davis is a spitfire! I’m looking forward to reading the series…
I love Davis Way!
Some characters were hard to follow. It was good but not excellent. I will try the next in the series to see if it gets better.
The book was action packed with interesting characters set in a fun casino.
The plot an original and intriguing mystery, the dialogue snappy, the characters quirky but sharp and well developed. Altogether a snappy, joy ride of a read w/ the requisite twists and turns in the road to keep you guessing till the very end. I hope there’s a Book 2 in this series. Davis Way is my new idol and Gretchen Archer a writer who, dare I say it, surpasses Evanovich?!
Former police officer Davis Way has finally landed a new job. She’s working as undercover security at the Bellissimo Resort and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi. The first thing she’s asked to do is figure out how someone is rigging the Double Whammy machines to win the jackpot. She’s just started the investigation when she makes a startling discovery – the person getting the jackpots is her ex-ex-husband, a man she doesn’t want back in her life. Can she figure out how he is rigging the machines without crossing his path?
I’ve had this series and this book on my radar for a while. While I don’t gamble, the casino setting intrigued, and I know this series is very popular. Unfortunately, this is one of those books that entertains while you are reading, but when you set it down, you begin to see the flaws. There is a good plot here, but it gets distracted several times with sub-plots that slow things down. I did like how Davis’s complicated past is given to us in flashbacks spread out over the entire novel; it helps give some of her actions more context. Unfortunately, I felt she made some very stupid decisions over the course of the novel, especially in the final third. There’s a complication in that final third that stretched my ability to suspend disbelief as well. It’s a shame because I liked the characters and can see them growing even more over the course of a series. This book describes itself as a comic caper, and I’ve found that some just don’t work for me, and I think that’s the case here. I know the series has many fans, but this debut didn’t work for me as well as I wanted it to.
