A 1940s Gothic mysteryA dilapidated manor on a remote Scottish isle.An old maze, concealing something even older. Strange dreams and awakening desires. Here, on Eirig, Samhain Eve is approaching.
Absolutely loved this 1940s gothic novel set on a Scottish island. It is gorgeously eerie and the tension builds as Samhain Eve approaches and the locals prepare to honour the dead and the Goddess Nicneven. With the housekeeper Mrs McInnes and the farm workers Neas and Eachinn all casting a strange and brooding air over the mansion is it surprising that Iris Muir has disturbing dreams? This is a must for anyone who loves gothic suspense novels.

I’ll start by stating i love the writings of the author and her book master of the moor is one of my favorites. This book didnt disappoint though its a different feel. A gothic mystery at its best with the creepy old house/mansion, secrets galore, the characters which were strange which only added to the sense of mystery all on a spooky old island. Within the storyline you just felt a sense of horror with the rituals. I definitely recommend this read. The storyline had me hooked from page 1. i didnt want to put it down… & the details that we’re given makes us feel like were part of the story. Wonderful Job!!!
I was gifted this book as an ARC and this is my voluntary and honest review.

Fascinating, thrilling tale, reminiscent of the old gods of Scotland and Britain at the time of Merlin and King Arthur. Samhain, the time when the veil between the dead and the living is thinning, is no other than our more recent All Saints and All Souls.
Pity it was quite short, whetting my appetite for more…

I enjoyed this gothic mystery story that was mixed with some erotic romance. It is set in the 40s on an island off of Scotland. It also has a good amount of suspense. This story was very entertaining to me.

This story opens with the self memory of a young woman who had no mother and taken care of an ailing father for months until his passing. A town with judgments towards her for being too picky for their men who didn’t meet her expectations. In her quest she finds the advertisement for Dorchadas House and their need for someone to help run it in exchange for room, board, and a small wage. Her decision was made.
Emmanuel de Maupassant takes us back to an earlier time where Pagan beliefs were stronger than the Christian beliefs. Where hearths and oil lamps were more prominent than the brashness of electricity. What a wonderful escape from modern times this story and characters have provided.
