Sadie had a bumpy upbringing but she’s still managed to drag herself out and carve a career for herself. That all comes crashing down when she, along with the women she manages; Mags, Lexi & Steph, get made redundant. She’s screwed. In hindsight she shouldn’t have attacked her colleague in a moment of rage. There goes the reference. When they all bump into each other a few months later at the … later at the job centre Sadie finds she’s not the only one in a hole. Steph’s boyfriend has left her holding the baby, Lexi’s stuck in an abusive relationship and poor Mags has breast cancer. They’re all struggling to keep on top of their bills. They all need money to get out of their situations, its as simple as that.
Mags mentions that some women find marijuana helps ease the sickness caused by chemo. With the desperation mounting and the coffee spurring them on they somehow decide to start growing it. They’re only going to sell to ladies going through chemo, so its not too bad, right? They’re not going to be proper drug dealers. And its only temporary.
They didn’t bet on the business taking off so well though. Before they know it they’ve got orders coming out of their ears, a sexy detective on their trail, suspicious neighbours and drug dealers angry they’re working on their patch.
Can Sadie pull them out of this dangerous world they’ve found themselves in? And can she do it before they end up in prison?

Dopey Women by Laura Barnard is a standalone romance and is Sadie and Harry’s story.
Dopey Women is like no other book of fiction that I have read before. I had no idea what this title meant but I found out and it makes complete sense now.
Sadie along with several of her co-workers have lost their jobs and they have no-where to turn to. Sadie comes up with the idea to sell marijuana to ladies that are going through chemo.
There are some LOL moments but also the seriousness of selling drugs. They now have a detective that is suspicious along with angry drug dealers. Harry is the detective and she has a love/hate relationship with him. Even at the end of the book it seems that she is always willing to think the worst of Harry. Through some twists and turns there is an HEA.
I loved this original storyline. At least it was original for me. This book held my attention from beginning to the end. I look forward to reading more from this author. 4.5 stars.
Dopey Women by Laura Barnard is a romantic comedy that I listened to on audio narrated by Mandy Williams.
I absolutely love Laura’s books! They always leave me with a smile on my face. I absolutely loved all the characters in this series. I loved the friendship between Sadie, Steph, Lexi, and Mags. Sadie and Harry’s relationship was a bit messy but you can’t help but root for them.
Mandy did an amazing job on the narration. I look forward to listening to more of her work in the future.
I would highly recommend this series if you love Chick Lits or Romantic Comedies.
This is a story that I didn’t really expect! It is fun and engaging with delightful characters. I really never knew what was going on between Sadie and Harry. I know I had wishful thinking but that doesn’t always work with a book.
This is chock full of wonderful characters! I loved each of them for different reasons. Her “gal pal” group has the most dynamics in it. Plus a wide range of ages which make them interesting. Then there is the Detective along with the drug dealers. I don’t want to forget Sam. He is a nice surprise and helps fill in Sadies backstory.
Then there is the lady of the hour Sadie. She is looking for one thing which leads to a boatload of trouble then she finds something else.
Overall this story is great! I could easily listen to it over and Over. I did listen to this on audio. Mandy Williams is the narrator. She is a first time listen for me and she does wonderful.
Oh Sadie! You are such a hot mess. You get into the weirdest most hilarious situations and it’s impossible not to laugh. You had me turning pages so fast to see how you’d get out of them all. And what is the deal with Harry? He is so fine. *swoon*
That ending made this book perfect. Way to go Laura. Another hilarious book.
What a ride! I didn’t know what to expect from one minute to the next.
When Sadie and the girls in her department are laid off from their job and they can’t find another job, they don’t know what they will do for money. But, when one of the women confesses she has cancer and wants to try marijuana, an idea is set into motion. They will make pot brownies to sell to the other patients going through chemo. Once they start selling, all sorts of craziness starts happening. But, there is one speck of hope, a police officer who can’t seem to get Sadie out of his mind. He will even risk his own life and career to protect her.
This book was serious, funny and romantic all rolled up in one entertaining story. I didn’t want it to end. I could easily see it being made into a tv show. I would say movie, but I wouldn’t want to watch for just a few hours, I want to keep watching the drama unfold for months at a time. If you’re looking for something a little bit different, be sure to pick up this book.
Sadie has worked her way up from living on the streets, and for the past ten years has worked an honest job in order to provide for herself. When her entire department is laid off, while although she freaks out, feels sure that she will bounce back, especially after the way she left after the layoff. Months later, nobody from her department has found other work, and they are all drowning in bills and bad luck. From their bad luck stems an idea to get their bills paid and back on their feet as a group; growing and selling drugs. Through some trials and tribulations, the group eventually gets on their feet and start making a profit, but between the local drug dealer finding out about them in addition to Sadie attracting local cop Harry, the group is doomed from the start. While the story was comical in some parts, it felt like it drug on and got a little redundant and confusing and while the concept was good, to me it fell a little short.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I enjoyed this story so so much. This is one of my favorite books of the year.Laura Barnard wrote a nice story, with a bunch of characters very well portrayed,it seems you have known them for years. The book is both hysterical and emotional likes the characters that live between its pages.I’ve laughed a lot reading it and at the end I’ve also cried a little.
