Vic McCabe is a billionaire contractor. Fifteen years ago he was a car thief. One night, after lifting a car, he and his girlfriend, Badra, were picked up by the police. Someone had tipped them off. The police searched the car and found a bag of white powder in the boot. Because of Badra’s ethnicity and her mother a Muslim, they treated it all as a terrorist threat. When the police went to arrest her parents they were shot and killed by the police. Badra, who loved Vic desperately, swore to Vic that she hated him because of everything that happened. Now, Badra is known as Fiona. Living a life trying to hide. And she has a son. Just who is John’s father? What a fantastic book as usual by this author.
This book bothered me. I am not saying that it wasn’t interesting or that it did not hold my attention. It actually was interesting and did hold my attention. It addressed some situations that occur, even in our current environment.
The thing that really continued to hang over my head was how angry Fiona/Badra was at Vic. It made no sense to me. She knew what he was while she was with him. I understood that the circumstances caused her life to change forever, but Vic did not hold the responsibility for that, the authorities did. Her anger was obvious and overwhelming to the point it kept throwing me off. I figured that I had missed some major detail that would explain why she was so angry.
As the story played out, I was even more confused about her anger. Vic was not responsible for the way other people treated her. I will admit that I completely understood her fear, and what it’s like to carry that with you on a daily basis. I felt that what she did about John was more for herself than to protect him. To hold onto that amount of anger for 14 years must have been exhausting.
This story tied up all of the loss ends very quickly. I won’t say neatly, because the reporter fell off the face of the earth. There were people introduced out of the blue. There were questions that went unanswered for years, and no one ever thought to ask them. There was the information Vic found out, presented to Fiona, and she was cool. No questions.
Let’s not forget Fiona’s fairly easy acceptance of Vic back in her life. I felt like she made some feeble protests AFTER she discovered part of Vic’s life. Before that, she was ready to attack at every turn. Then, there was the HEA. Fast and easy acceptance.
The book was ok, but I still feel like I was missing something, and there were still unanswered questions. The narration was ok. I think I would have enjoyed it more if it had been dual.
This mind boggling story will touch your hearts and have you cheering Badra aka Fiona and Vic on to a second chance for happiness. Back in their youth one night of recklessness will change the course of their lives for ever. For Badra/Fiona, she will lose so much and gain something precious. For Vic he will lose the woman he cared for but make changes to his life that will make him the man he is today. When a reporter comes snooping around about an incident that happened years ago, Vic will do everything in his power to keep the woman he loves safe and out of harms way in spite of her keeping secrets away from him.
This is yet another a fabulous contemporary romance from Ms. Eckhart.
The story is well-written and filled it with outstanding characters and packed with drama, humour, sex and suspense.
I enjoyed reading this fast-paced book and look forward to reading more from Lorhainne Eckhart in the future.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I received a copy from BookFunnel and I chose to voluntarily review it. This one is well written but it is dark for my reading. I would encourage everyone to give this one a chance. It is one for the person who likes their book a little on the dark side. Give this one a chance. You really might like it.
Vic McCabe is used to getting what he wants, and when a reporter shows up asking questions about his past, the one thing he wants is to protect the only woman he has ever loved. Fiona Marino has struggled for 15 years to rebuild her life. The last thing she expects or wants is Vic back in her life uncovering her secrets.
This is an engaging romance filled with a roller coaster of emotions and dramatic twists and turns. The characters are well-drawn and passionate, and the storyline is fast-paced and captivating. It’s an enjoyable and interesting read, which will keep your attention from start to finish. I recommend this very entertaining story.
Vic is an alpha male all the way–and swoon worthy!
This is a review of the audiobook,
Overall – 5
Performance – 3
Story – 5
Ever since Lorhainne Eckhart introduced us to Vic McCabe in Leave the Light On, a book in her popular Friessens series, I’ve wanted to read his story. You definitely don’t need to read Leave the Light On before reading this one as Vic was a minor (but memorable) character in that book. He is a very wealthy man and owns a construction company with locations in multiple states.
In Don’t Stop Me we learn that Vic’s past wasn’t so stellar. That past comes knocking on his door in more ways than one. A reporter has dug up information on something that happened in Vic’s past that also affects the only women he ever loved. They haven’t seen each other in 15 years and now Vic must find her so that he can protect her from what the reporter wants to print.
Wow! I loved the little bit of Vic that we got to see in Leave the Light On and he’s even more alpha and yummy in his own story. Don’t Stop Me has a bit of mystery and intrigue as well as lots of heat between Vic and Fiona. We also get to meet one of Vic’s brothers, Chase, and I’m looking forward to reading his story soon.
About the narration…This is the first audiobook I’ve listened to by Jaclynn Michelle Elfring. She did a great job with different voices for the characters in the story and she has a pleasing voice. The main reason I only gave her performance 3 stars is the phrasing was off in way more than a few places. It didn’t exactly take me out of the story but it was definitely noticeable. She only has two books on Audible so I’m hoping that she’s new to audiobook narration and that she will improve with more experience.
A review copy of this audiobook was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.
Don’t Stop Me: Vic by Lorhainne Eckhart is a fabulous contemporary romance. Ms. Eckhart has delivered a well-written book and filled it with outstanding characters. Vic McCabe made the mistake of stealing a car and setting off a series of horrifying events. Years later Fiona (Badra) is running her coffee shop and raising her son when her life is thrown into turmoil again. Vic and Fiona’s story is packed with drama, humor, sex and suspense. I enjoyed reading this fast-paced book and look forward to reading more from Lorhainne Eckhart in the future. Don’t Stop Me: Vic is book 1 of The McCabe Brothers Series but it can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I voluntarily read a complimentary copy of this book that I received from Bookfunnel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was a story that has a happy ending with lots of heart ache along the way. Makes you stop and think about children in foster care.
