Former Broadway dancer and current agoraphobic Billy Shine has not set foot outside his apartment in almost a decade. He has glimpsed his neighbors — beautiful manicurist Rayleen, lonely old Ms. Hinman, bigoted and angry Mr. Lafferty, kind-hearted Felipe, and 9-year-old Grace and her former addict mother Eileen.
But most of them have never seen Billy. Not until Grace begins to sit outside on … outside on the building’s front stoop for hours every day, inches from Billy’s patio. Troubled by this change in the natural order, Billy makes it far enough out onto his porch to ask Grace why she doesn’t sit inside where it’s safe. Her answer: “If I sit inside, then nobody will know I’m in trouble. And then nobody will help me.”
Her answer changes everything.
By the bestselling author of WHEN I FOUND YOU, SECOND HAND HEART, and PAY IT FORWARD, DON’T LET ME GO is the heart-breaking, funny, and life-affirming story of a building full of loners and misfits who come together to help a little girl survive — and thrive — against all odds.

I have already recommended one of Ms. Hyde’s books, but I have to recommend this one, too. I LOVED this book! Grace is absolutely charming and the ways in which she unites a group of loners into a family as they seek to protect her is by turns funny and heartbreaking. I laughed, I got teary, and I savored every page of this remarkable, original, …
Nine year old Grace has a problem. Her mother isn’t taking care of her because she’s drugged out. The other five tenants in her building barely know each other, but when they start to care for Grace, they go from strangers to something like a family.
My favorite character in this book was Billy Shine. Billy is an ex Broadway dancer who is …
This book will move you in so many ways and make you feel blessed.
After reading the reviews I expected to love this book. I was a little disappointed. The storyline was good but just not very believable. There were way to many areas about the character’s lives and backgrounds left unanswered to be realistic. For as long as the book was, there was a lot of time taken up with useless stuff. The Charecters were …
My favorite Hyde book
Love all of her books.
This book just reached in and squeezed my heart.
It is a beautifully written story of people learning to be brave enough to really feel and care for each other.
I loved the characters so much that I couldn’t put it down and really didn’t want it to ever end.
Very highly recommended!
One of my all time favorites. A “Village” of residents in an apartment building come to together to help raise a child.
My favorite Catherine Ryan Hyde book.
This is an excellent book. Catherine Ryan Hyde writes great books about current issues that are very relatable. And she makes you like the characters. You won’t regret devoting your time to her stories.
I laughed and cried in this book. Katherine Ryan Hyde is a great writer. You will fall in love with the characters in this book and how they care for this little girl.

another great one from catherine ryan hyde
LOVED this book! I’ve read a few good ones lately and this is at the top of the list! Such wonderful characters. They say it takes a village to raise a child but in this case it took a child to raise a village.
All I can say is, just read it!
I have read several books by this author and enjoy them very much. They capture your interest, draw you into the plot and are easy to read.
