Why do I feel like I’m going through life naked if I’m following God faithfully?
The Bible tells you the war has already been won, yet some days you simply feel undone.
The enemy of your soul wants you to feel out of control…overwhelmed, outwitted and under resourced. When you listen to the lies the enemy weaves in your marriage, finances, relationships, and health, he wreaks havoc. Steals your joy. Kills your hope. And aims to not only dull, but destroy the power of God in your life.
In Don’t Go through Life Naked, Susan B. Mead shares her own deeply personal experiences with feeling exposed and engaging the enemy—from the recurring nightmares of childhood to the loss of her son and perceived judgment of others.
With scriptural insight, let’s-get-real vulnerability, and a wry sense of humor, Mead helps readers:
– Toss out misconceptions about spiritual warfare to understand what Jesus really said about your spiritual authority and the certainty you have in him.
– Know what to pray to steady your soul and restore your confidence.
– Stop feeling overrun by the enemy and start believing the authority of God abides in you to overcome.
In Don’t Go through Life Naked, Mead provides strong spiritual weapons for your life through the scripture of God’s prayer book, the Bible. These weapons enable you to successfully clothe yourself in God’s power and promises every day.

Don’t Go Through Life Naked: How to Clothe Yourself in God’s Power by Susan B. Mead
The focus of this short book is to equip Christians to not just survive the attacks of Satan, but to understand how he attacks and how to fight back. The author shares some personal experiences, Bible verses and reflection questions to this end. In many ways, the book reads like a conversation with a friend.
Overall, the author does a good job in covering this. She also makes it very clear that the promises of Scripture apply to the Redeemed and explains the way of salvation. Yay!
I expected this book to be mostly about the spiritual armor mentioned in Ephesians. I was wrong. The author uses Scripture from the Old and New Testament to back up her teachings, and for the most part, I agree with her interpretation and application.
A few things gave me pause, but they aren’t significant enough for me to suggest you not read the book. She quotes what Wikipedia says about who Lucifer is. While I use that resource frequently, I don’t suggest using it as a source of learning Biblical truths without verifying the facts from other reliable sources. Anyone can have input in the articles there, and thus you don’t necessarily know if it was posted by a Christian, atheist, Mormon, etc. That is an important distinction because we all come to look at these things with a very different perspective.
She also suggests that the reader search Bible Gateway or another online Bible to find truth that applies to their circumstances from Scripture. Personally this worries me, because it is so easy to take Scripture out of context and use it to prove things that are simply not true. Therefore, dear reader, please be diligent when you read Scripture and always read it in full context.

I would like to thank Celebrate Lit for giving me this copy of the book. This gift did not influence my opinion or review.
Finally a book that talks abut spiritual warfare. I don’t hear very many pastors preaching about such an important part of a Christian walk today. Everyday the enemy is there with his tricks just waiting to take you out. He is subtle but so effective if we are not ready. A small argument with a spouse, an unkind word from a friend or an unfounded accusation can take you out.
The author does not pull any punches and I love that she is very direct with readers. I was floored when I saw the words spiritual rape. That is such an accurate description of what the enemy does to us. We leave ourselves exposed by not praying and not surrounding ourselves with like minded people. Do we remember to carry the Word with us everyday? I never thought about leading others astray when I fall from grace, but it makes perfect sense. Don’t we find people to agree with us when we feel hurt by someone?
One of the biggest attacks the enemy uses on us is our mind. He is crafty and whispers to us things like, “Is your spouse cheating on you,” or ” Did you know that so and so said horrible things about you to the pastor?” ” You are stupid.” The question we need to ask ourselves is, ” Will we follow the “rabbit trail” of an enticing thought or ” take every thought captive?”
I like that the author provides refection questions at the end of every chapter. I encourage you to read them and apply them to your lives. The author leaves no subject untouched and I love how she breaks down words so we can understand what God is saying to us. Many people have a problem with the word submit. When the author breaks the word down it makes perfect sense. Basically it means under mission. Who do you want to be under mission to?
I appreciate the author being transparent with her struggles she has faced with her boys. We all want to have the perfect child that never gets in trouble. But reality is that we can do everything right and our children may choose a different path. I loved when she said, “I’m not giving up mothering! I am praying and holding on.” That is what we all need to do; which is not give up and never stop praying. I enjoyed this book very much and found it to be encouraging and powerful.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
