Junior high is where things really start to happen. Cliques form and break apart. Couples are made and destroyed. And a reputation is solidified that you won’t ever be able to escape. Everything you do and say, and everyone you spend your time with, matters.
Katie Mills knows that. She gets it. That’s why she tried so hard to get in with the cool girls at school. And why she was so devastated … devastated when those efforts found her detained for shoplifting and laughed out of cheer squad tryouts.
But Katie has more to worry about than just fitting in. Her parents are divorced and always fighting. Her sister never has time for her. And her friends all seem to be drifting apart. Even worse? The boy she has a crush on is dating the mean girl at school.
Everything is a mess, and Katie doesn’t feel like she has control over any of it. Certainly not over her weight, which has always topped out at slightly pudgier than normal—at least, according to her mother.
So when she happens to catch one of the popular girls throwing up in the bathroom one day, it sparks an idea. A match that quickly engulfs her life in flames.
Is there any going back once she gets started down this path?
And would she even want to if she could?

It should be in all Middle school and high school libraries. The last two books I have read by Ms. Farnham containing subjects that no one seems to want to talk about, but these are subjects that people need to talk about and need to open their eyes up to these problems that are going on around them. We cannot just sweep these sore subjects under the carpets and expect them to go away. And in her last two books, I have read, she brings the subjects out in the open and on the table like no other author I have ever read. This book is about bulimia, and this is Katie’s story. I recommend this book to all middle-grade and young adults.
This story follows a girl and her before, during, and after journey with bulimia. I would make sure the reader is mature enough to handle the real struggles and dangers in bulimia. It was an intense and believable read. Her desire to fit in and be like the “cool” kids was very real.
I really liked reading this book. I loved the way it was written. I loved everything about it. It does have triggers. So if you are a recovering ED you migjt want to steer clear. But it was very insightful.
This book is so realistic that it will haunt you. This particular book took me longer to read then most, which could be for a variety of reasons, but I think the biggest one is that it’s a hard book to read. I don’t mean this to sound like it’s a poorly written book, but every teenage girl can relate to this book and should read it. I am no longer a teenager, but I could relate to having some of these same feelings when I was in high school. Each night after I would read for a little while, I found myself laying in bed just thinking about what I had just read. This rarely happens to me. I am so glad I read this book and I do highly recommend it, but read with caution as I believe it will haunt you for days after completing it.
In a nutshell, Don’t Call Me Kit Kat is the story of an eight grade girl, Katie, who develops an eating disorder and her struggle to overcome it while trying to fit in at school. On the outside, it looks like she’s got it all, but looks can be deceiving and things are rarely what they seem.
It’s been a long time since I was a teen eager but reading this book transported me back to that hard time of my life. Like “Kit Kat” Katie I struggled, struggled to fit in, struggled with how I saw myself, struggled to love myself. I had family problems as well. This author did a wonderful job at portraying all Katie faced, and with showing how to get help. The message of this story is definitely one I believe every young girl, or boy, needs to hear.
This was a good and well written story. But, it had it’s moments of sadness and reading about how and what Katie went through was tough. But the things she went through are not something we have not seen or heard before. This book makes you go through so many emotions as you go along with Katie’s struggle. This book is a good book to enlighten people about the issue that happen in middle school or anytime in life. There wasn’t a moment I dislike anything with the book other than Katie’s mother who I felt was cold hearted and selfish.
SPEECHLESS! JUST SPEECHLESS!!! DON’T CALL ME KIT KAT by K.J. Farnham BLEW ME AWAY with this One!! It was such a Rollercoaster ride of Emotional distress and Heartwreching Aches & Pains! The storyline had me Intrigued from the Very Beginning of the Book and never a Dull moment page after page!! I devoured this book in ONE Sitting since is So Different Uniquely Written plus such an Suspenseful Epic story that will Leave you Speechless!
When growing up as a girl, you have some many illusions of what a perfect body should be like and you see other girls you envy that you don’t have that they have. Wishing you can be like them INSTEAD of yourself because you want to be liked them and in the “in crowd” which you want to belong to something. This is what Don’t Call Me Kit Kat was like and then Some! I’m Not Going to Spoil anything for you since there is So much Suspenseful Surprises and Entertainment of the characters mindsets.
THIS IS A DEFINITELY MUST READ BOOK of EPIC PROPORTIONS!!!
This book was a fast read for me and I couldn’t put it down. This had me so emotional, even though this was geared towards teens (in my opinion) it really hit me hard. The struggles that young kids face everyday behind closed doors, is so sad! This book deals with a young girl and her eating disorder. This was a real eye opener and the story was told very well.
This story is about Katie (Kit Kat), and her 8th grade year of Middle School. Katie has wanted to be a part of a group of girls that she thinks are beautiful, and have everything. She and her best friend Carly go out for cheerleaders, Katie doesn’t make the squad, but Carly does. Now Katie doesn’t feel like she fits in anywhere, and there is Sloan that is always mean to her and bullying Katie. Katie develops an eating disorder, and loses way too much weight, even though she can’t see that she has herself. There is a lot of middle school, early teenage years drama, eating disorders and other ways to harm yourself that could be triggers. I really think that this would be a great mandatory read for all middle schoolers, as it might help some to realize they are not alone. Informative and very well written story.
This book has different story line . I love the story. It is sad story but has a great ending.
This is a good story including real life struggles teens face, including bullying, eating disorders and first boyfriends. I really liked most of the characters and the growth the main character, Katie, has towards the end of the story. I enjoyed the author’s writing style and the story flowed very well.
Wow. This is a pretty hard-hitting young-adult novel with a bunch of triggers for some people (eating disorders, self-harm). It’s well-written, well-researched, sensitive to the issues involved but without tiptoeing around them. I enjoyed it a lot, and thought characters and their relationships were explored really well. I did think that there were a few unresolved issues though, which is why this was only a four star read for me.
I loved this book.
It was absolutely amazing and powerful. But also had me crying most of the time.
Katie Mills is your typical teenager who wants to fit in with the cool crowd. But she fails and when she becomes the brunt of everyone’s joke she doesn’t know what to do or how to get out of this rut that she finds herself in.
I found this book to be a breakthrough for young girls out there especially one dealing with depression and disorders. But I also learned a lot more about how hard it could be for other women out there. It was raw, realistic and eye-opening. They were worth the tears, and the laughs. Everyone needs a copy of this book.
Katie but everyone calls her kit kat is 13 year old girl. She is in middle school and dealing with middle school problems. She really wants to fit in with cool crowd. She has so much pressure from peers to her mother. She just wants control and to fit in. She finds an out by throwing up. Something would trigger her and she would scarf so much sweets to make herself feel better to later purge it all up. She even has a system of what is easier to throw up. She doesn’t see how bad she has gotten till she finally breaks down. This story was a hard one for me to read all at once. It is an eye opener and makes you think. I loved how the character was written. Very strong story line.
This story follows a girl named Katie she has a series problem with a eating disorder this story will go through her journey before after and during its very emotional what this poor girl went through! It’s insane what she has to go through just to fit in with her classmates even being bullied!
I can’t imagine being a kid these days. There is so much bullying and so many pressures.
This story follows Katie and how everything changes for her at the beginning of her 8th grade year. Middle school is hard and kids can be mean.
This story while it was difficult to read it is so important. Our kids need our support and they hear everything we say and see everything we do.
I was so sad, so sad for all the kids who suffer and don’t have a safe place to go. The kids who suffer and have no one they can turn to.
This is so wonderfully written. I think it is an important subject matter, one that isn’t often talked about.
This book does such a good job of showing the struggles off eating disorders in young girls. It’s sad, heartbreak, but real. A real eye opener. I felt so bad for Katie and hated the was Sloan treated her! Daisy made me sad too.
This book brings eating disorders to light a little and helps young adults understand a little more about why people might do things that seem disturbing.
This book was trite. It was an easy read and enjoyable if you’re into teen drama. If you’re looking for something profound about body image or disordered eating, this isn’t it.
I never read these type of books. The type that is emotional and tear jerking. But I decided to give it a chance. It took a bit for me to get into it, but once I did I could not stop until I finished. Very well written.
