With a scientist’s mind and an animal lover’s compassion, world-renowned biologist Rupert Sheldrake presents a groundbreaking exploration of animal behavior that will profoundly change the way we think about animals–and ourselves. How do cats know when it’s time to go to the vet, even before the cat carrier comes out? How do dogs know when their owners are returning home at unexpected … home at unexpected times? How can horses find their way back to the stable over completely unfamiliar terrain?
After five years of extensive research involving thousands of people who have pets and work with animals, Dr. Sheldrake proves conclusively what many pet owners already know: there is a strong connection between humans and animals that defies present-day scientific understanding. Sheldrake compellingly demonstrates that we and our pets are social animals linked together by invisible bonds connecting animals to each other, to their owners, and to their homes in powerful ways. His provocative ideas about these social, or morphic, fields explain the uncanny behavior often observed in pets and help provide an explanation for amazing animal behavior in the wild, such as migration and homing.
Dogs That Know When Their Owners Are Coming Home not only provides fascinating insight into animal, and human, behavior, but also teaches us to question the boundaries of conventional scientific thought, and shows that the very animals who are closest to us have much to teach us about biology, nature, and consciousness.

I love everything by Rupert Sheldrake. His work is non-fiction.
Many of the examples seemed far fetched to me. Mildly interesting.
Don’t waste your time
Too technical
Love dogs however, not this book
Good information, albeit a bit dated. Choppy writing and rather repetative.
Interesting. Boy and his dog and Rupert Sheldrake
Too technical, anticipated more real dog stories
very interesting and compelling research
The author takes episodes where animals appear to be aware and communicates with humans and infers that the connection must be due to telepathy. An interesting theory but I am not totally convinced by his argument.
A bunch of boring anecdotes. Yuk!
I was very interested I learning about the physic powers of many different animals.
I was fascinated. There are so many people, widely separated in time and space, who report these phenomena, for there not to be something going on; just because we don’t understand how, doesn’t mean it isn’t real.
This has a lot of good information in it but I found it more scientific than is fun to read.
This was an excellent book! We have been dog owners throughout our entire marriage and to read this book was simply amazing. Now I have a much better understanding of why all of our dogs reacted the way they did. All dog owners should read this book!
I wish I could have read this book fifty years ago. It would have been so helpful with my interaction with all the pets I’ve lived with through the years. I always had a suspicion that my clever cats could read my mind. Author Sheldrake has convinced me that I was correct in thinking so. A great book.
This is a book written about scientific inquiry into the bonds between animals and humans.
Very disappointed in this book. I had thought it would be a scientically based book about the relationship of humans and dogs. The last thing I expected was a pseudo scientific treatise on telepathy. Waste of my time. If description of book had stated the basic premise of the author I would not have bought this. Author and I may both have PdD in …
Too dry, had to work at reading it.
Easy to read. interesting facts and examples .
