Brandy Alexander and her boyfriend, Jiff Heinkel, are set to enjoy a long weekend in Navarre, Florida when, on an early-morning beach walk, they find a dead woman under the pier clutching a leash embroidered with Rascal and a rendition of a schnauzer.
Although they’re supposed to be relaxing away from the hullabaloo of New Orleans, both start sleuthing to discover the identity of the dead woman and why she was murdered. Brandy is especially concerned about Rascal on the loose.
After a day of conferring with the police and looking for the dog, they make their way to the Pensacola Marina, where they meet Jiff’s law school friend Daniel Becnel, who left lawyering for the life of a charter boat captain. Tonight Jiff’s hired him to take them on a sunset cruise, and who should be hanging out with Daniel but Rascal? He claims he found the little guy in the parking lot of a marine store several miles away.
As Brandy and Jiff continue their investigation, they meet a shady special agent, a pair of sensible sisters, a woman claiming to be the sibling of the dead woman, and an Air Force MP with an interesting side gig. They’re also chased by prison-tatted enforcers trying to steal Rascal, whose strange behavior reveals a wealth of information — and the reason the woman under the pier was killed.
Alyson Krawchuk is the perfect narrator to bring Brandy to life. Her southern accent is sweet but not syrupy, and her pace is excellent. This is the perfect audiobook for immersive reading, as Ms. Krawchuk’s voices blends perfectly with the words on the page, or standalone listening.
I loved reading this ebook after breakfast for an hour before going out to run errands and sitting outside in the shade around the pool while I dried off after getting out of our pool. This ebook is one of the stories in Summer Snoops and Cozy Crimes:12 Mysteries for the Dog Days of Summer.
This story starts out with a weekend getaway at the beach with Jiff and Brandy and while Brandy is walking her dog on the beach she discovers a dead body under a pier. There’s a leash wrapped around the dead woman’s wrist and no dog. When Brandy finds the missing dog, she finds a whole lot more than she bargained for. My interest increased when I read that Brandy rescues Schnauzers. I am a dog lover and read as much as I could when I got home today and finished the book.
When I go to the lake, the beach, or a poolside retreat, Colleen Mooney’s cozy mysteries always find a spot in my beach bag. I’ve read a few of her books now, enough to know the perfect read for a relaxing summer escape or a cold winter night cuddled up by a fire––and DOG GONE And DEAD, a book from her Brandy Alexander Mysteries, didn’t disappoint.
A beach vacation is the last place one would want to be drawn into a murder case, unless that person is Brandy Alexander––love the name. While taking a walk, she discovers a dead body under a pier. The dead woman is clinging to a dog leash, but the dog seems to have escaped his master’s fate. Immediately, Brandy and her boyfriend, Jiff, are on the case. Searching for the lost dog, she discovers several possible suspects, but her investigative instincts ultimately prevail.
I love stories that include dogs, so Rascal drew me in on page one. This author writes such fun cozies. I love her style and humor, her characters are lovable, and her plots weave enough suspects into her stories to keep me guessing.
If you love cozy mysteries and are looking for stories just long enough to read on a lazy afternoon, I highly recommend Colleen Mooney’s books.
Note: I listened to this story on Audible. I love having that option!
Enjoyable light hearted murder mystery that involves a couple on a coastal vacation with complications. There are plenty of local characters to keep you guessing who did the deed. I loved that the duo are compatible & in love with each other minus any angst. The addition of them being animal lovers who find & care for the dead dames dog is wonderful. This is a perfect caper for a relaxing read & a great series of sleuthing stories. I also enjoyed reading about all the places in my local NWFL area!
Brandy and Jiff go on a much needed vacation. Never did the expect that their early morning walk on the beach would lead to a full blown police investigation. Leave it to Brandy to piece things together and even do a little undercover work. So much for the vacation!
I really enjoyed this short cozy mystery by Colleen Mooney. I love how the main character, Brandy, continues to grow as the series progresses. While I’d recommend listening to all the stories in the series, this book definitely works as a stand-alone as well. If you’re looking for an interesting cozy mystery with a few twists and turns, Dog Gone and Dead won’t disappoint!
This was an entertaining narration by Alyson Krawchuk. Her pace was perfect for the story.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.
This review is for the audio book.
I enjoyed this book, as I have the rest of the series. This is book five in this fun loving dog series and works well as a stand alone book, mainly because Brandy is on holiday so it is not set in New Orleans and doesn’t contain the family drama but the other books are so much fun that I would recommend you start at the beginning and work your way through. I don’t think this book is as funny as the previous books (it does have a few moments though) and in fact I think we see Brandy grow as a character. She is a lot more confident with her investigation and I enjoyed puzzling it out with her. There was enough suspects to keep you guessing and listening until the end and with a few added twists to the plot, some you see coming and some you don’t, you will want to listen to it all in one sitting. Looking forward to the next book.
Brandy and Jiff are on holiday were the biggest problem should be which factor sun cream they should put on but an early morning walk puts an end to that romantic notion. They find a dead body on the beach and when Brandy finds a dog lead clutched in the dead woman’s hands she has no intention of not trying to find the missing dog. But finding the dog brings its own problems. Can Brandy and Jiff find the killer and the reason someone keeps trying to dognap the schnauzer. Beach time will have to be put on hold until they can crack the code behind this deadly mystery
I liked the narrator, especially her accent it really helped you imagine the setting and picture the characters.
Dog Gone and Dead is Book 5 in the New Orleans Go Cup Series by Colleen Mooney. I really am enjoying this series. Brandy and her boyfriend, Jiff, are on a weekend trip. The beach is supposed to be fun, not murder. Jiff and Brandy discovered a body under the pier just out of the water. There is a dog leash and a missing dog. Of course Brandy must look for the dog and maybe just find a few clues to the murder. Alyson Krawchuk is fabulous in the narration. Colleen Mooney writes wonderful stories with characters that I believe in and her writing has such good humor. I can’t wait to read book 6 and see what Brandy gets into next!
Good times gone bad.
Who would have thought going on a quiet getaway together could turn so chaotic and volatile? Another person bites the dust in this fast-paced story of sun, surf and criminals. Great series! Loving it!
Once again a fantastic book in this series. Loved it! Lots of mystery, mayhem, murder, mistaken identity, lost dog, drama, danger, strange twists and turns, and crooked cops! While on vacation, find a dead body, rescue a lost dog, and of course solve a mystery! What could possibly go wrong?
