Now a major motion picture starring Ewan McGregor! From master storyteller Stephen King, his unforgettable and terrifying sequel to The Shining–an instant #1 New York Times bestseller that is “[a] vivid frightscape” (The New York Times). Years ago, the haunting of the Overlook Hotel nearly broke young Dan Torrance’s sanity, as his paranormal gift known as “the shining” opened a door straight … paranormal gift known as “the shining” opened a door straight into hell. And even though Dan is all grown up, the ghosts of the Overlook–and his father’s legacy of alcoholism and violence–kept him drifting aimlessly for most of his life. Now, Dan has finally found some order in the chaos by working in a local hospice, earning the nickname “Doctor Sleep” by secretly using his special abilities to comfort the dying and prepare them for the afterlife. But when he unexpectedly meets twelve-year-old Abra Stone–who possesses an even more powerful manifestation of the shining–the two find their lives in sudden jeopardy at the hands of the ageless and murderous nomadic tribe known as the True Knot, reigniting Dan’s own demons and summoning him to battle for this young girl’s soul and survival…

Loved the book. I listened to it on Audible and it made it even scarier!
Thoroughly enjoyed listening to the audiobook of this follow-up to the Shining. It gripped me throughout and was a good sequel to a great book.
I’m a HUGE Stephen King fan, so of course, I couldn’t wait to read “Doctor Sleep.” I bought a hard copy (all S.K.’s books I own in hard cover) and settled in, expecting the best. I wasn’t disappointed. Love this continuation of Danny Torrance’s story (the little boy from ‘The Shining’), but wow! Wasn’t expecting what he put the guy through as an adult! Watching grown-up Dan Torrance hit rock bottom was chilling and sad; coupled with the spooky True Knot cult and the new little ‘shining’ girl, Abra–the author kept me turning the pages long, long into the night.
Finished the sucker in three glorious days, and now I’m going through serious Stephen King withdrawal. The guy is a master story-teller, and I really loved “Doctor Sleep.” Can’t wait for the next novel!!
A page turner that keeps you wanting to keep on reading!
Best. Sequel. Ever.
Mr.King, you are the true KING of horror! I just finished this awesome book yesterday! Couldn’t put it down. I have to say I’m so glad i read the book First, as I watched the movie today and while the castvwas incredible, the movie was very disappointing.
I am glad I got to find out what ever happened to Danny Torrance. Total fan of Stephen King. I am going to try to watch the movie Next I know there’s going to be some differences just like the first. But I literally could not stop reading this book Loretta pretty fast.
I loved the ending. It’s great to let the characters grow up before you check in with them again.
Great Book!!
Love Stephen King and this book doesn’t disappoint it’s a great follow up for the Shining. This was one of my favorite books and movies. I know King didn’t like the movie, but it was amazing! I was so happy to revisit the characters. The new bad guys in this book were so evil and fun, I read the book in only a day! Get the book, read it, watch the movie, you’ll love them!
Excellent
Love how it showed Danny as a man and to learn about himself. Also the little girl who was brave and gifted
I loved this book and I am going to reread this book again
good sequel not what i expected
Being as it was my 1st King book I was lucky enough to read it caught my attention fast. I had nothing really to compare it to, as I think of every writer and story there own. I very much enjoyed it, and I hope you do too.
Stephen King is the master of horror. If you’ve read The Shining, then you have to read this masterful work which brings so many different hints and nods to the original. Great read.
This is an incredible story, and I’m ready for the movie now! I love learning the story of the poor boy in The Shining, the explanation of what the Shining is, and the new characters introduced in Doctor Sleep. If you’re a King fan, you’ve probably already read this. If you’re a fan of The Shining, you want this to go on your to-read list for the coming year. Highly recommend the audiobook version, too.
This is one of those novels that i did not want to end, it was that good, a perfect sequel to the Shining.
Quite possibly my favorite Stephen King book ever. Beautiful, suspenseful, and haunting tale.
The mentored now becomes the mentor and they shine bright together.
Poor Danny has followed into his father’s footsteps of alcoholism and spiraled so far down trying to drink away all that he has seen and is still literally and figuratively haunted by. At his rock bottom he decides he needs to start over and is drawn to a small town in New Hampshire.
Young Abra’s shining is even more powerful than Danny’s ever was. She first telepathically contacted him when she was just a small child. Years later she reconnects with him when she realizes there is a horrible group of ‘beings’ out there killing children that have their own version of shining so that they can feast on them, giving them their eternal life. Together Danny & Abra shine strong to bring down this ancient horrible group disguised as humans that call themselves the True Knot before they are killed by them as well. So super creepy and intense!
When this book first came out I wasn’t very interested in reading it because I really didn’t care to know what Danny (& possibly Tony) were up to, like so many others were. Then when I learned it was being adapted into a movie – and the trailer looked pretty good – I wanted to read the book first to see how much the movie butchers the book like the original ‘The Shining’ movie did to the book (the fate of some of the characters and the entire ending was different!)
I’m glad I read the book and am looking forward to watching the movie.
