What happens when a dare goes too far?Maddox Coulter. Reckless bad boy. Infamous playboy. My nemesis. And now my best friend.I know he’ll never leave me hanging. He knows I’ll never refuse a dare. Everywhere we go we turn heads, but it’s not like that.Until it is.For one of us, anyway.I’ve always known he would be my downfall. He proved me wrong.
Maddox has gone too far, and I don’t know if I want to rein him in or push us further into dangerous territory.
He tells me those three little words that I crave. Three little words I want from no one else.
“I dare you.”
Except this time, it’s no simple dare. This could burn us to the ground.

Edit : I do a little edit on this review after doing a Re read the whole duet and I promise you, you will not want to leave Maddox and Lila after you’re done.
Omg the level of slow burn of this book!
I don’t know why I thought this book is a bully romance, cause it’s not. Yes there’s enemy to lovers vibe, but even that not evil sworn enemy where two parties hate each other.
Nope. Maddox and Lila doesn’t hate each other. She saw him as this dirty mouth with one track mind, a rich brat playboy jock star who doesn’t know the meaning hard work. Until one day she witness his vulnerability.
While Maddox, for him is was just for fun to get a reaction from this sassy, brave, smart with sexy behind-girl. Until he see her in her most vulnerable.
A classic enemy to lovers romance, this high school couple pull Prank to each other that just makes me laugh. It’s childish really. Nothing dangerous. I like this part of them.
But omg the slow burn!
Everybody can see their attraction is more than just friend! It’s like a curse their friend zoning each other. The way the author make us all wait on edge for them finally be together, is crazy good! I can feel the tension between Maddox and Lila, so high. It’s like string pull taut slowly, you see it and feel it with every agonizing second! And when finally it’s got to the max and snap, mylawwwd it’s EPIC!
I love Maddox and Lila chemistry. They make me laugh, angry for them, cry for them, lusting so hard and just ready to kick some behind for them to get together already!
This was my first time reading anything from this author, and wow was this a great read. This is the first book in The Truth or Dare Duet, and the story of Maddox, and Lila, once nemesis, they have a great chemistry with plenty of witty banter. This book was well written, the characters have great chemistry, and I can’t wait to continue their story in book two. This was entertaining, funny, dramatic, steamy, emotional, and a must read!
I’m really torn on this book. The whole story was really good beginning to end. Especially the end! What a freaking cliffhanger! The story line had me hooked but there were some parts that weren’t elaborated enough or just completely left out. It was still really good read and I recommend this book to everyone. Where is the second book I can’t find it anywhere!
I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie’s Book Reports.

This book is amazing and you are going to be left on the edge of your seat trying to catch your breath. Holy cow what a book. I am still trying to process what I just read and trying to figure out what the heck is actually really going on. Your new book boyfriend is going to be Maddox Coulter. He is the guy that every girl knows is not good for her but she wants him anyway. He hot and sexy and the most popular guy in school. He is however a playboy, he has it going on and he knows it. However there is one girl in this world that he didn’t impress at all and ha is Lila Garcia. She can not stand him. She is totally different from everyone in her school. Her family doesn’t have money and she doesn’t come from a influential family. But she is beautiful, determined and really smart and she sure doesn’t respond to Maddox’s constant teasing. She is one feisty girl and she give it to him as good as she gets. To her she was a challenge but somehow all this evolves into the most amazing friendship. They have this special bond and actually took the time to get to know each other backwards, sideways and inside out. They are soon the most important people in the world to each other. But one bet has bone wrong and it has threatened to destroy everything they have worked so hard to build. Don’t even think about it get this book dive in and enjoy.
Enemies to Friends with a little spice to it… And the cherry on top comes last!

What’s this book about? (I’m trying to give as little spoilers as possible)
Maddox Coulter and Lila Garcia were off to a rocky start until they decided to become friends. Playfully, they dare each other, knowing that they don’t reject any dare. What happens when a dare goes too far?
This was my first Lylah James book. I picked it up last week since it had been on my Kindle for weeks already – the promo team sent it to me right away when I signed up for the second one! I thought that I had to hurry up because book 2 was coming and I hadn’t read book 1 yet and therefore I was creating a mess… And then when I was mid-book I realized that there had been a delay for book 2 which explained why there had been radio silence.
Let me just start out by saying that my expectations were PASSED BY A 100000000000%. In the prologue, the first thing I noticed was Lila’s possessiveness and I was like YES, I STAN THIS. I don’t usually like slow-burn romance, but this was so delicious that it was worth it. One of the main factors that drew me in right away were the STRONG prologue. I was hooked. There was so much in the first pages that you NEEDED to know what happened for them to get where they ended up.
The chemistry between Maddox and Lila was steamy and hysterical at times. Their ‘friendship’ was cute and really. REALLY amusing *smirk*. I didn’t have problems with any of the characters and I commend the sassy, snappy and on point dialogue for keeping me on edge all the time.
The final chapters of this story take you on a ride… One that I really want to continue. GIVE ME BOOK 2, BOOK GODS, PLEASE. That cliffhanger just… DAMN. Book 2 is coming on 2/10!
Just recently I discovered Author Lylah James and devoured her mafia series which was phenomenal. I was intrigued to see she was writing something lighter and I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about it since I love darker reads but boy was I absolutely surprised. This book was so freaking good!!
Based on the blurb you may think it’s going to be some story about a dare between enemies but it’s SO much more. This story had depth!!The characters are raw and full of surprises. You will be absolutely consumed.
The player and the prey.
Maddox ‘Cocky’ Coulter. He’s the bad boy. The one every girl wants to claim but once he sets his sights on Lila, he discovers more than he bargained for. But Lila isn’t falling for his tricks or that sexy mouth of his. Although sometimes even she can see the appeal.
“ Are you flirting with me, Coulter?” I still couldn’t wipe the grin off my face. “Are you falling for it, Garcia?”
Lylah James takes you to the beginning. Back to when Maddox and Lila are enemies who thrive on tormenting each other. Silly pranks, wicked banter, sexual tension that they try to deny.
As these two enemies feed off pushing each other, they soon find they have things in common that they never would’ve thought. Secrets from their pasts and pain in the present that torments them and makes them feel alone, these two develop a bond, a friendship that only they understand.
“She was the calm in my reckless life. I was the chaos in her peaceful one.”
Enemies turns into something more but with their need to protect one another and the fear of losing the connection they share, these Two best friends didn’t have the courage to acknowledge whatever this was between them.
Be prepared to get sucked in. I literally couldn’t put this book down and woke up at 3am and had to keep reading.
Lila is fierce and Maddox is sinfully sweet.
The connection and chemistry between the two is something to be envious over.
I don’t want to give too much away because this is one of those books that’s best left going in blind. You will be hooked from page one and on the edge of your seat the entire ride.
I’m anxiously awaiting the final installment of this duet. Once again Lylah James has knocked me off my feet with her ability to tell a story.
I have been searching for a read like this. One that would invade every one of my senses and sit at the forefront of my mind still days after finishing it. I just can’t get these characters out of my head or my heart. I’m a sucker for the angst and this author definitely brought it.

As delicious as a romance can be. In fact, I’m pretty in love with this story. Slow burn romance which allows you to feel it all, to anticipate and to almost grasp it… Right until that Epilogue.
Do you dare to read it now?
I FLOVE Maddox Coulter! HE IS MINE AND I AM NOT SHARING HIM!! With the important part out of the way let’s talk about how much I freaking loved this book, and how hard Lylah James nailed it!! She has left me screaming for more!
Everything about this book is absolute perfection! Lylah James hooked me right from the start, and kept me obsessing long after I was finished. Maddox and Lila’s story is friends to lover, bully romance and James has captured both tropes with absolute perfection! I love these two so much I’m willing to forgive the man bun Maddoc had at one point.
James could not have created more amazing characters. Lila is the type of heroine I love, strong, feisty, sassy. Maddoc is the hot alpha asshole I want to hate but love way more. Their friendship is amazing and I loved every part of it. The love/hate relationship they originally have just adds that much more to their story. The push, pull they have towards each other keeps the sexual tension high, and me waiting for the fireworks when they finally get together.
And let’s talk about that cliffhanger! What kind of monster leaves us like that? She gives us everything we want, rips it away and then leaves us a broken mess and a terrible cliffhanger!
Do You Dare will be a top read of 2019 for me! Lylah James could not have delivered a more perfect book! Everything was amazing! I’m here waiting not so patiently for I Dare You! I can’t wait to see the heartache, and angst she brings to my life with the conclusion of their story!
Do You Dare? is my first book by Lylah James and given that it is an enemies-to-lovers romance, a trope that is my absolute favourite, I had a few expectations. It was a 50/50 outcome.
I loved the prologue, I loved Maddox & Lila’s friendship, I loved their chemistry and I loved how the story ended, even though it did leave me with TONS of questions!
However, there was a lot of stuff in the middle that just fell flat to me. There were also time jumps that were inconsistent and not seamless. I had to go back a few times to check and see how much time had passed.
Moreover, the blurb and title rely on the game of ‘Dare’ but this game does not come into play way later in the book and even then it is not the main focus like it suggested it to be the main focus of how their friendship and the subsequent relationship came about.
This one had so much potential. SO MUCH! Now, I am at a stage where even though I am not too hot about this one, I am dying to see what happens in Book 2, especially with the way Book 1 ended.
2.5 – 3 Stars!
This was my first book by Lylah James and I am absolutely blown away! I loved every single bit of this angsty, steamy, slow-burn romance. The tension and chemistry between Maddox and Lila was off the charts. I can not believe the cliffhanger this ended on. I need the next book now!
OMG this book was so good. It was everything that drives me nuts in romance usually it was a slow burn story, they are in high school in the begining, the hero can be a bit of a bully and yet I freaking loved it. Every word. And there were some really beautifully written passages. Despite the slow burn there are some hot scenes.
This is a book about to very damaged people who find together they can heal. The question is is a relationship worth the possible demise of their friendship? Maddox makes Lila less rigid. Lila makes Maddox try harder. It’s a great story.
FYI this is a cliff hanger. I couldn’t find out when book two is coming out, so if you can’t stand waiting buy this now and hold onto it until the next book comes out. I’m really hoping we hear more from Riley and her live troubles. A MFM romance would awesome to see!
This is my first read by Lylah James.
This books was amazing! Not what I was expecting but in a good way. Totally took me by surprise and cursed how it ended (it’s a cliffy people!).
I loved everything about Lila, she was so strong and loved her sassy and fighter spirit. But also how she had her soft side too that everyone got to see. Not even those closest to her. Her story was so heartbreakingly good, like I have no other words to describe it.
And again I loved everything about Maddox. He was so complicated and I needed to know more about his story. She didn’t too much into his story like I would have liked but maybe that is for book 2. The ending killed me with him. I hate to love cliffhangers but gahhh I need to know. She killed me with how he reacted in the end.
I will also add that this is a very slow burn but it is so worth it!!
5⃣
recommendation
“I dare you to fuck him.”
Holllllllllly shit!
What was that?!
I have been so excited to read Do You Dare and Lylah James did not disappoint.
The slow burn just about killed me off. The amount of times I was screaming at my kindle “JUST GET TOGETHER ALREADY!!!!”
”Who was going to break first?
The player or the prey?”
This book consumed me. Like sucked me in and swallowed me whole. I couldn’t put it down. Adulting didn’t happen. I devoured it in one sitting.
I just love Maddox. That man. Gahhhh he is the most frustrating, beautifully broken guy. Once he let Lila in, I couldn’t have loved him more if I tried. I loved the back and forth, the banter and sass between them. But do you know what I loved the most… their friendship.
“Maddox Coulter- the balm you my soul but also the stinging pain in my chest. He was sweet heaven and the bane of my existence.”
I didn’t expect to cry at this book. I didn’t expect to uncontrollably sob my heart out. I cried for them and their pain because I felt it in my soul.
I loved Lila. I loved just how strong she was. She never backed down. She had been through so damn much and still she held her head up high. Not letting people walk all over her.
Do you dare is a bully/enemies to lovers- to friends to lovers romance book that will leave you swooning, swearing and shouting for more. The angst levels were excruciating, but oh so worth it.
One of my top books of 2019!
Oh my goodness! This book is sensational! It really gripped me and kept me reading right to the end in one sitting.
Lila and Maddox are a dynamite duo but they’re just frenemies. Right?!
The chemistry between them says otherwise but their heads and hearts are wary. They are both hurting inside and they need each other in a way that neither expected. I laughed out loud at the antics of these two, I held my breath when they got intimate and I cried when they let down their defenses.
This is part one of a duet and I am aching to read part two. I was scrolling at the end wanting more!
Lylah James is an amazing author and I honestly would read anything she writes. I highly recommend you read Do You Dare?
Think the slowest burn romance possible. Think about heart ripping, heartbreaking and twisted angst. Think about sexy, steamy and passionate. And a combination of all these would be the perfect summary of Do You Dare by Lylah James.
This is enemies to lover romance in the core and at very best. Maddox Coulter is the proverbial bad boy of the school of riches. He is the walking talking cliche to every one. Football star. Uber rich. Arrogant, attractive and annoying to the max. Lila Garcia does not need his attention as she hates boys like Maddox. But one coffee accident and many heated altercations later, she can see this popular guy has a dark, broken and vulnerable side. And he needs someone in his corner. Like she does. So they become friends. But how long they can stay so when they feel this nuclear hot passion and soul shattering emotion inside? Can Maddox avoid breaking the only person’s heart that matters? Can Lila avoid falling for him as disaster is written in bold letters all over their relationship?
I love Lila so much! She is a powerhouse in her tiny body. She is fierce, strong and sassy. She hides her own pain behind her smart and bold mouth. She stood beside Maddox even when he was acting like an idiot. And what I can say about Maddox? He is my weakness. My heart and panties stood no chance in face of his charming, dominating, maddening, rude and sinfully sexy self. I loved the pain and pleasure of the slow burn. Lylah James built their bond brick by brick so that I could feel every cruel push, magnetic pull, euphoric up and soul crushing down. The layers of their connection have layers. And that ending was unbelievable! How can I wait till the next part?
Do You Dare is the enticing story of two broken souls. The writing was amazing and the story line kept me on the edge of my seat. A perfect balance of steamy, intense and heartaching.
Received ARC for Honest review
I give this 4.5*
It was a great but frustrating story. Lila and Maddox relationship started when she spilled coffee when they bumped into each other and they become enemies. I love the banter and the pranks these two played in each other. Then they decided to call a truce and become friends even though there is sexual tension between these two. Both broken from traumatic events they went through when they were younger they become closer and become best friends. I love how how they always said “I Got You!” My frustration is how much these two wanted each other but both afraid to cross the line, which I get because they didn’t want to ruin what they have but still frustrating and then the ending just leaves me asking WTF happened. I am anxiously awaiting for the conclusion and hope to hear Riley and Cooper’s story.
I won an ARC and volunteered to leave a review.
I really enjoy reading a good frenemy romance. I absolutely love the angsty drama surrounding these stories. But ‘Do You Dare’ goes way beyond friends, enemies, love and hate. It centers on two damaged hearts that find solace in their mutual need to escape their pain by living in the moment.
Of course, this frenemyship (possible new word?) starts senior year at Berkshire Academy between rich and popular quarterback and ruler of the school, Maddox Coulter and unassuming perfectionist Lila Garcia. Maddox is the typical taunting, teasing bully but Lila never lets Maddox win in their mutual love/hate battle. Lila is a definite tough chick with a soft heart towards someone in pain.
Maddox is a typical wounded bully looking to escape his problems through hurting himself and others. But his frenemy status with Lila is weak from the start. And while he lives for the angst between them, he also craves Lila’s friendship more than anything. I love the slow build “friends or more” tension between Lila and Maddox.
There is such an interesting mysterious element to this story that confused and intrigued me, especially concerning Maddox’s past. I hope in the next book, everything about his past will be explained.
Book Name : Do You Dare by Lylah James.
Genre : New Adult, Contemporary Romance.
Series : Truth and Dare Duet #1.
Rating : 4 STARS –
I was the stupid girl who fell in love with her best friend.
Do You Dare brings back lot of pleasant bittersweet memories to me. I remember Lylah James to be my first ever author who introduced me to the amazing world of books. Yes, I began my reading hobby with her The Mafia And His Angel: Part 1, a mafia romance. Practically, she’s the one to take my Book virginity. Since 2017, I have loved this author to pieces. When I heard about DYD, I was both scared and ecstatic. Scared, why? I knew she’ll take me to a world of Angst, Passion, Raw Desires and Sexual Frustration. I call it Lylah’s classic. And man, she didn’t disappoint me for even a minute. The only reason I can’t help myself to give full stars is because of that frustration level which left me all hot and bothered till the end of the book. So unfair to poor ol’ heart of mine.
We were more than friends but less than lovers. That was our relationship; there was no real definition.
Lila Garcia, a beautiful, broken and torn Latin girl finds herself to be the center attraction for the big bad wolf, Maddox Coulter. From being bullies and pranksters of each other, they keep aside their desires and take on a route of friendship. Yep, pretty much friend-zoned instead of bracing their lust driven wishes. Things twist and turn for better or worse when these desires are lit and are uncontrollable. Enter new flings, ex hussies and more drama and you’ve a classic Lylah story delivered to you.
I knew Maddox would break my heart, but a part of me hoped he wouldn’t.
Maddox was a sweetheart, well of course a douche nonetheless. But with a painful and scary past and sorry excuse for parents, his behavior equalizes pretty nicely to an extent that only his best friend Lila could take hold off. Whereas our sassy Latina girl has her own demons to fight off. In Lylah’s world, the heroines are mostly broken and tortured but with our girl here, she gives a sassy upfront never seen before. Toggling between past and present, DYD made up for a good afternoon read. I lived for their banter. I lived for their pranks. And more importantly I lived for Maddox’s feelings towards himself; for he never thought himself worthy enough to be loved enough by anyone, courtesy to his parents of course.
Was he praying for absolution or destruction? Because whispering my name like that could only destroy us.
Let’s gossip a little about their sizzling, oh so panty melting chemistry and Coulter’s addiction for Lila’s ripe juicy ass, now? Damn. I have never screamed, vented and cursed an author like I did at Lylah for the highest amount of sexual frustration she gave me here. It was like, they’re almost there and then suddenly poof. Pop goes the weasel! How so cruel of the author to play with our feelings in this manner. I loved the Dirty Dancing scene which you’ll find yourself fanning to for sure. There were so many sentimental moments to fawn over in this story but over all, it had a strong and firm grip holding to the edge till the end.
Stop looking at my ass, Garcia.
Stop prancing around me naked, Coulter.
The possessive touches and glances, the tortured expressions, the merry laughter and pranks, the regretting dare and thrilling kisses made up for one hell of a story for 2019. It certainly had the best release and nonetheless an enigmatic Prologue for DYD #2. Watch out for the climax, people.Lylah James
Do You Dare? by Lylah James is a bully romance that brings the heat to the romance in such a way that they go from enemies to lovers…Wowza!!!
Maddox and Lila- theirs is a slow burn romance. Maddox comes off as the biggest jerk/player out there while Lila is sweet and sassy. So much better than Maddox- polar opposites and yet that’s what the draw is. They start off as enemies but things slowly change and let me say..the heat is hot in here!!! Without giving anything up, at times they both drove me nuts and they both broke my heart but wow when they went all in…it’s sweet and beautiful and just delicious!!! After how it ended, I need book 2 like now.
My Rating: 4.5 stars ******
Absolutely Incredible! From start to finish I was COMPLETELY ADDICTED…to the words, to Maddox and Lila, their whole world! Lylah James made my heart feel and hurt for these two. It was impossible not to, especially the more of them that she revealed.
“Maddox, my hero? She was mistaken.
I was my own hero.” Lila Garcia
Lila Garcia is my kinda girl! She’s strong, loyal, feisty and fun! The kind of girl who can take care of herself and does it! She’s determined to excel and does everything in her power to make sure she accomplishes her dreams, not letting anything or anyone deter her! Not only that but she’s a pusher…she pushes those closest to her to be their best! She’s the best kind of friend anyone could have…most importantly the best friend a guy like Maddox Coulter could ever have!
“She was the calm in my reckless life.
I was the chaos in her peaceful one.” Maddox Coulter
Maddox Coulter has the power to break hearts even from the pages of a book. I know…I speak from experience. My heart has cried over this sexy Casanova! This bad boy has layers that no one has seen until his walls drop in a moment of weakness, Lila gets to see a part of who he really is deep inside. Once she does..everything changes!
The friendship between these two can rival that of all famous friend duos you know. What they offer each other is something it seems no one has ever before been able to get from another. The pranks…the dares, the banter back and forth, the slow burn that’ll have you panting from where you sit.
What starts as a game to steal smiles from the boy who has come to mean so much to her…changes drastically when he makes the ultimate dare…
I LOVED this book so freaking much!!! It is hands down one of my favorites from this year!
I try to keep all spoilers out of my reviews, as I want you to experience Maddox in all his cocky gloriousness! So keep in mind since that’s the case there’s so much amazing stuff missing from my review that you’ll only experience from reading!
