A romance lover wants to read a story that sweeps you away from your ordinary life for a few hours, one that makes you forget about the dirty dishes in the sink or loads of laundry while you dream of some handsome and wealthy hero-turned-lover that rescues the poor damsel-in-distress. I’m happy to say that Discretion, the first book in the new The Dumonts series, is exactly this kind of romance! Can you hear that sound? That’s me, loudly happy sighing.
I’ve never been a fan of the Insta-Love trope and the reason is very few (if any) authors can sell me the idea of two complete strangers falling in love, almost instantly, sometimes at first sight. Well Ms. Halle has convinced me, her writing is always phenomenal, and I bought it lock, stock and barrel! I loved how these two total strangers met by chance, from different parts of the world and entirely different socioeconomic status, and then fell in love. There’s a little intrigue and danger in the story that will keep you guessing, not knowing where it’s heading, and I’m excited there’s more to come!
Sadie Reynolds and her boyfriend of two years, Tom, had planned a three month trip backpacking through Europe on their summer vacation, before classes started. A month into their trip she found out he’d been cheating on her, almost from the very beginning, and she broke up with him. Thankfully Tom returned to Seattle, but Sadie couldn’t afford to change her plane ticket and she still has three more weeks to go before heading back home.
“We all need to feel, even the bad things. It’s what makes us human. If you stay in the void for too long, you’ll start questioning your humanity.”
When Sadie’s mugged in Nice, on the way to catch a train to Spain, she’s rescued by a handsome stranger who takes her to the hospital. Not only did she sprain her ankle but she missed her train, something she couldn’t afford to do. The stranger generously offers to take care of her, until she’s off her crutches, sparing no expense. Sadie soon finds out who he is, after she Googles him.
“You buy a Chanel to show the world you’ve made it. You buy a Dumont to show yourself you’ve made it.”
Olivier Dumont, thirty years old, is the son of Ludovic Dumont, the head of the prestigious and exclusive Dumont brand, a billion dollar company. Olivier the heir apparent is supposed to take over the company when his father retires. That was the plan until he made a huge and scandalous mistake, that was kept quiet by his uncle, ten years ago. But there was a heavy price to pay for that silence; Olivier had made a deal with the devil himself, and now the time was running out and his uncle was going to collect what was due to him.
“Oh, mon lapin, you are the only thing that’s good and pure and real in my whole life.”
Olivier had been wrestling with his options, knowing he had to make a hard decision, when he jumped in to rescue a young American woman in trouble. There was something about the American waif that he couldn’t ignore. The more time Olivier spent with Sadie, the more he began to wonder who rescued who.
“I want to consume this man, and I want him to consume me. I want to feel this part of him before we say goodbye and the fairy tale ends and my old life begins again. I want Olivier before it’s too late.”
Sadie decides to take a leap of faith with Olivier. Sadie’s convinced there’s a reason they met and she gives herself three weeks with him, before she goes back home.
“There’s nothing as nerve-racking as the moment before you’re about to jump, when something goes from a concept that you’ve talked about and considered to a real, actual thing. It’s scary. It doesn’t matter if it’s taking your first trip overseas or jumping into the Mediterranean Sea at night. The abstract becomes your reality, and it’s happening.”
3.75 stars–DISCRETION is the first instalment in Karina Halle’s contemporary, adult THE DUMONTS erotic, romance series focusing on the wealthy Dumont family of France. This is thirty year old, eldest son Olivier Dumont, and twenty-three year old, American college student Sadie Reynolds’ story line.
Told from dual first person perspectives (Sadie and Olivier) DISCRETION follows the building romance between thirty year old, eldest son Olivier Dumont, and twenty-three year old, American college student Sadie Reynolds. Sadie Reynolds found herself alone in Europe after discovering her boyfriend Tom had cheated back home. By herself, struggling to make ends meet, Sadie will come face to face with her future following an attempted robbery wherein our heroine is rescued by the man with whom she will fall in love. Enter billionaire hotelier and heir to the Dumont fashion house of France, Olivier Dumont. What ensues is the building relationship and romance between Olivier and Sadie, and the potential fall-out as the dysfunctional Dumont family forces Sadie to run to protect the man that she loves.
Sadie Reynolds was on vacation in Europe with her boyfriend when her best friend called to say she discovered Sadie’s man had been having an affair. Alone, and without support, Sadie travels from hostel to hostel until someone attacks leaving Sadie injured, and in need of help. Olivier Dumont hides a secret that is about to implode his well-organized world, a secret that will affect his relationship with our story line heroine- the woman with whom he is hoping to spend the rest of his life. A scandal that could potentially split the House of Dumont; a blackmail scheme that could have easily been nipped in the bud years before is about to come to fruition and upend Olivier’s life.
The relationship between Sadie and Olivier is one of immediate attraction but Sadie struggles with the difference between the haves (Dumonts) and the have-nots (Sadie). When Olivier offers Sadie the opportunity to remain in France until it is time to go home, Sadie jumps at the chance only to discover that all is not well within the Dumont dynasty. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
We are introduced to Olivier’s sister Seraphine and brother Renaud, as well as their father Ludovic Dumont; Uncle Gautier, and Olivier’s cousins Pascal and Blaise.
DISCRETION is a story of family, betrayal, power and control. The premise is intriguing and entertaining; the characters are colorful, energetic and dynamic; the romance is steamy and hot. DISCRETION is a dramatic and interesting tale but several scenarios were not quite believable, and could have been dealt with in other ways.
I adored Karina Halle’s “Discretion.” The love story between Sadie and Olivier was romantic, sweet, and oh-so-sexy, and there was plenty of intrigue and family drama to keep me turning the pages quickly. I hated to put the book down when real life intruded!
What I love the most about Karina Halle’s books is the emotion that is present on every single page. The characters are so real and relatable, and I can go from laughing with them one minute to crying with them the next. That was particularly true of this book and its main characters, Olivier and Sadie. I found both of them to be well-developed and incredibly likeable, and I couldn’t help but root for them to find a way to outsmart Olivier’s uncle and end up together.
You wouldn’t expect Olivier, with his wealthy, privileged background, to be such a genuinely good, nice guy, but he is, and he’s exactly what Sadie needs after what she went through with her mom in her childhood and later with the terrible way her ex-boyfriend Tom treated her. But Olivier needs Sadie too. She’s like a breath of fresh air for someone in his position, because he is used to being surrounded by models and socialites who just want to use him for his money and position. Sadie doesn’t want any of the trappings of Olivier’s wealth; she just wants HIM.
Sadie and Olivier certainly faced their share of challenges in this book, but I appreciated that they never doubted each other or their love. They just kept moving forward, adjusting to things as they happened, until they finally found a way to make their relationship work.
I am very much looking forward to the second book in this series to see what happens next with the Dumont family. Surely this can’t be how things end with Olivier’s uncle and cousin Pascal! Somebody really needs to bring those guys down…

A great start to a new series by an author I love. Karina Halle is one of my go to authors.
Oliver is a sexy French man who is a Dumont and most people know him. Sadie is back packing through Europe alone and never expects to get mugged. Thanks to her sexy hero Oliver she gets out of the situation only a little hurt. She is a college student fresh off a breakup. Oliver helps take care of her until she is back on her feet.
Things shouldn’t work between these two because they are so different and come from different worlds. I really enjoyed these characters and their story. I can’t wait for more in this series.
4.5/5 Stars

This is such an intriguing story that grabbed me from the first page!
This is the first book that I have read from this author but it will not be my last. I fell so in love with the writing style. It was elegant, easy to read, and it flowed so smoothly.
The plot of this book was pretty tantalizing. I loved all the family drama and the mysteries contained in the plot. The sequence of events definitely left me on the edge of my seat and wanting more. The twists and turns in the story had me on edge. The ending was satisfying yet open enough for the coming books in the series. There were some things that were left unanswered so I am hoping that we get more closure and answers in the next books.
The main characters in this book had wonderful personalities. I adored the banter between them as well. I felt that Olivier had the most character development, though Sadie had some nice growth as well. We get to know both characters fairly well throughout the course of the story so there is plenty of depth to them. I liked getting to know all the members of the Dumont family and see the bonds that they shared or lack thereof. The family drama was pretty exciting. I can’t wait to get to know the Dumonts even better in the following books in this series.
I enjoyed the romance because the chemistry between these two main characters was explosive. Right off the bat, these two felt so right together. I did feel that they became intimate and emotional far too quickly though. I like a little build up and believability in my romances and this felt a little forced in the beginning. While it wasn’t necessarily insta-love, it also wasn’t a slow-burn romance either. I think that a little more time to get to know each other at the start would have made things a bit more convincing. Apart from that, these two really were perfect for each other. I liked how they brought each other comfort and they were each able to be themselves around the other when neither really had that with anyone else.
I thought that the world-building was very well written. I am not very worldly since I haven’t traveled out of my own country before, but I could feel the scenes all around me while reading this book. The descriptions of France and the little things that Sadie experiences while she is there were so vividly described that I could swear that I was right there with her.
Overall, this is a compelling story filled with family drama, scandal, skeletons in closets, and a seriously sexy romance. This is a book that I couldn’t put down and I am so eager for the next books in this series.
This book is more romantic suspense with emphasis on the suspense than Karina normal stories and I must say that I loved it.
Sadie Reynolds is a student back packing her way through Europe and she has finally made her way to the Riviera. When she is attacked in a dark alley a man comes to her rescue. That man is Olivier Dumont, billionaire hotelier, and heir to the Dumont fashion fortune. They start an affair after Olivier decides he is willing to risk his secrets coming out to keep her. Will they have a chance at a future or will they be destroyed by all the family secrets he has been keeping
The blurb of this story really intrigued me so I was excited to read Discretion. This was a romance mixed with suspense, mystery, secrets, and an interesting family dynamic. The Dumonts are a fascinating family that’s for sure. Oliver and Sadie were likable main characters. They had their strengths and flaws so seeing how that would go with everything else that was going on was intriguing. There were parts of the plot that I really wanted to know what will happened. As this being a series, I can’t wait to find out the answers. I did like the writing style and some of the characters-of course there would be villains. I am interested in the next book of the series because of the push-and-pull between Seraphine and Blaise.
Down on your luck in Europe and being rescued by a handsome stranger. It almost sounds like a fairytale… Discretion tells the story of Sadie and Olivier, who come from very different worlds. I love them, and their amazing story.
Sadie had big plans for her summer trip to Europe, but the break-up with her boyfriend wasn’t part of those plans. Now Sadie is traveling all alone, on a way tighter budget but still enjoying herself. Olivier is a rich man, working for the company his family has built. With being rich and good-looking Olivier has no problems with finding women, but there’s something different about Sadie. Olivier and Sadie start out as knight and damsel in distress, but soon they’re much more.
Sadie and Olivier can’t be more different; she’s an American student, he’s a French businessman. But for some reason, they just work. Not that Sadie makes it easy for Olivier, it takes a lot of convincing from his side to make her accept his help. I love this! I would be wary as well; alone in a strange city and somebody you don’t know offering you his help. I love Olivier and Sadie together, they’re an amazing couple who deserve everything.
Discretion is the first book in the ‘Dumont Series’, and introduces Sadie and Olivier, as well as the other members of the Dumont family. It’s a world of luxury where money plays no role. Well, kind of, because money can bring out the worst in people. The romance between Olivier and Sadie is a sweet whirlwind, but there’s much more going on. And not all is sweet… I can’t wait for the future books in this series, I need to know more about the Dumont’s and their intrigues.
Overall Rating:
I’ve been a fan of Karina Halle since The Swedish Prince. I don’t recall what drew me to her originally (I believe it was the recommendation of another beloved author), but, from the start, I have been drawn to her books. She has this way of writing flawed heroes who aren’t too dark, but they carry some type of secret or worry that inherently derails their journey with the heroine. Inevitably, they work through the hero’s issue and find their happily-ever-after, but there are times when the reader is never quite sure. I’m fairly certain that The Wild Heir is still my favorite Halle book, but I’m currently intrigued by her newest series The Dumonts, starting with Discretion.
Set initially in the chic French Riviera, we meet Sadie. A student from the US who has been living and traveling through Europe in the shadow of a break-up with her boyfriend. She is low on money and coming to the end of her journey. As she prepares to leave the French Riviera for Spain, the final jaunt on her journey, she is attacked. In the midst of the attack, a man stops and saves her from her attacker. He is instantly drawn to her and transports her to the hospital for treatment. From that moment, Olivier, the rescuer, and Sadie are connected. He is drawn to her inexplicably at first, and she finds protection with him.
What Sadie doesn’t realize is Olivier hails from one of the richest, most storied French fashion families akin to Chanel. Having branched into the life of a hotelier, Olivier has distanced himself from his famous family. However, this is intentional as he carries a secret, one that potentially dooms their burgeoning relationship. Will Olivier reveal his secret, and will it end his relationship with Sadie? That is the turmoil of this book.
I was reading this book shortly after spending time in Paris, one of the locations in the book, and I found myself walking along Olivier and Sadie. There is something about Paris that underscores the magic of this couple. Olivier is really a dreamy hero. He’s attentive, handsome, rich, and a magician in the bedroom. He recognizes that Sadie is different, and he is drawn to her difference. It changes him in this story, and it’s my favorite part of this book. What may frustrate some readers, me included, is his insistence on holding fast to his secret. He doesn’t tell his father, his siblings, and even Sadie for much of the book. And, of course, that’s the impetus for the drama in Discretion.
As a heroine, Sadie is every woman. I’d love to say that she’s exceptional, but, as a heroine, she really isn’t. She is exceptional in loving and challenging Olivier’s perception of himself. She doesn’t do this consciously, by the way. Olivier’s realization of her power over him comes to him gradually. But this story isn’t about powerful heroines. Instead, it’s a story of intrigue, of power, of debauchery.
The story itself is the driving force behind this book. Yes, Olivier’s journey is my favorite part of Discretion. However, the story pulls you through. It keeps you reading because Discretion is actually more romantic suspense than contemporary romance. There is no resolution to the overarching story in this book, which leads the reader into Disarm, the second book of the series: more intrigue, more struggles for power, more secrets to reveal.
In general, I liked Halle’s Discretion. Like I said at the beginning of this review, Karina Halle is a “go-to” writer for me. Whatever she writes I will read. However, there was some sparkle missing from this book. I felt like the characters weren’t as developed as previous characters in her other books. There was something a bit flat with their development. After reading her acknowledgments, however, I realized that this book was a turning point for her, and it made me love her just a bit more. Do I recommend you read Discretion? Absolutely. My quibble is nothing, really. I simply have an expectation of Halle that is probably unreasonable. You will fall in love with Olivier and Sadie’s story. You will love the intrigue of the story and its supporting characters. And you will remember that Karina Halle has a magical way of telling stories, even with a struggle.
Dear readers, meet your new Book Boyfriend: Olivier Dumont.
Tall, dark, handsome, successful, and loyal to his family. Well, loyal to his father and siblings, anyway. Uncles and cousins … perhaps not as loyal.
When we meet Olivier, he is twenty and has just made a mistake that causes him to sign a contract with an uncle. As the book unfolds, we learn what prompted this contract as well as its contents. Part of me couldn’t figure out why Olivier signed it because it doesn’t seem like the instigating factor is all that terrible, but to Olivier, it is.
Into his life comes Sadie, an American ostensibly touring Europe with her now ex-boyfriend. Like Olivier, Sadie is loyal to her family. She has an exit date not so much because she needs to get back to her college classes as because she believes she needs to get back to her mother.
When they meet, attraction is immediate. As Sadie tries to put the brakes on, she meets with resistance, both hers and Olivier’s. Meanwhile, his family is up to NO GOOD. Those uncles and cousins? TROUBLE.
Karina Halle plays with the notion of family loyalty and what it means. If your focus is being loyal to your family, when are you loyal to yourself? Sadie’s and Olivier’s families react differently to their struggles, yet even with those differences, Sadie and Olivier place an emphasis on fidelity.
Fear not, this is a Hot Romance Novel with one heck of a Hot Hero. I love Olivier. LOVE HIM. I’m curious as to what future Dumont books mean. This is the first in a series, and while the ending isn’t necessarily a cliffhanger in that the plot you’re most concerned about is resolved, nevertheless Karina Halle leaves you wanting more from Olivier, his brother, and his sister. And Sadie, too.
So strap on your vibrators, girls, and enjoy Olivier Dumont.
I am a huge Karina Halle fan but being 100‐transparent this wasn’t my favorite Halle book. I felt like it’s been following the same paths as so many other stories and specifically, even Halle’s last book “My Life in Shambles,” which I totally loved but this almost felt like a retelling with different names and a bit more at the end. We have the rich and famous Oliver falling instantly for just a regular ol’ girl (Sadie) that’s full of insecurities. Doesn’t that sound like a million other books out there? I think that’s my main issue. Now, the first half I felt like this. The second half Halle seemed to take a twist and ventured into more suspense… which I loved. I felt like a fish out of water… on one side I totally loved the story and on the other is felt like the same old story with different names.
Thankfully the story had all of Karina Halle’s excellent writing… she’s able to have a deep balance between love and lust. I loved the balance between Oliver and Sadie. However, my favorite parts were the darker areas… the suspense with Pascal. I seriously enjoyed the action… those pages just flew by! I almost feel like Halle has missed her calling and should be a suspense writer!
I received an ARC of this book with the hope that I would leave an Unbiased Opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that… my opinions.
I’m a big fan of this author. If you’ve seen any of our “best of” lists, you already know that. I’m happy to report that her latest release didn’t let me down in any way.
Plot overview: Down-on-her-luck student Sadie Reynolds lucks out in a BIG way when Olivier Dumont saves her from an attacker on the street, then takes it upon himself to take care of her while she recovers from an injury. But everything isn’t exactly rosy in Olivier’s family, and drama and intrigue ensue. It’s a forced proximity, opposites attract romance with a side of romantic suspense.
First of all, I was a big fan of both Sadie and Olivier. They come from two different worlds, but in their hearts, they aren’t that different. They’re both kind, giving, and fiercely protective of their families and loved ones. Sadie is generous with her heart, and Olivier is generous with his money. They were a perfect match for each other and I had no trouble believing that they could build a long, happy life together.
The sexy times in the book are of the oh-holy-hell-that’s-hot variety. There were also plenty of sexy times in the book. This is definitely NOT a chaste, closed door kind of romance. But even so, there weren’t so many sexy times that they got in the way of the character development or plot. There was a nice balance here.
Things really got interesting and suspense-y towards the end of the book. There’s plenty of action and intrigue, and while there are no cliffhangers, there are a few unanswered questions that I imagine will be addressed later in the series. (And I’ll definitely be sticking around to read more of these books, I can promise you that.)
If I was going to nitpick, I guess I wish that Olivier would have told certain members of his family to take a flying leap sooner. (Yes, I’m intentionally being vague so as not to give out any spoilers) But I forgave him because his heart was in the right place. And extra points to Sadie for being nothing but supportive when the truth came out.
So, long-story-short, if you like hot and spicy contemporary romance with a side of action and suspense (not to mention a sexy hero with a hot French accent), Discretion might just be your next 5-star read.
Full disclosure: We received an ARC from the publisher and NetGalley free of charge.

I have read a few Karina Halle books prior to this one and was intrigued by the cover (lets face it, covers draw us in and this one did it job well) and had high hopes. Unfortunately this book fell short for me. I had trouble connecting with the characters, the characters love story fell short, and the big secret was a little weak.
I feel this story had great potential but for me fell short.

Olivier Dumont. If you’ve read this book, you definitely want him for your own. I know I do. He’s a suave, caring, hot Frenchman that sweeps Sadie, an American college tourist, off her feet when he saves her from a mugging. What starts for Sadie as a quick holiday romance with a local quickly turns into something more serious when Olivier’s powerful and mysterious extended family starts to interfer. But just like the Dumont’s, there is more to this story than meets the eye.
I loved the instant connection between Sadie and Olivier. Their chemistry is off the charts hot, hot, hot! The only downside is that the story felt rushed in parts, but it really didn’t bother me because there’s a continuation to the Dumont family saga with Olivier’s sister Seraphine’s story next. 4 stars.
Discretion is another one of my first read from the author. I have had her other works on my TBR list and finally got to read her. I was telling myself, why didn’t I do it sooner. Well, guys, this book just freaking smack me in the face with its awesomeness!
First off and I will try to give little details so not to spoil, the story lulls you into thinking, oh this is romance with some secrets, lies that the hero is hiding from the heroine. Okay, I’m down with that. So there I was, reading, enjoying the passionate, sexy, steamy scenes. Boy, was Olivier hot! May I just say, that I think I’m developing a soft spot for French guys? Olivier is the second French man that I’m seriously crushing on, and I think I will be in for more of these hot guys from this series.
But I digress. So again, I was sitting there and plowing through the story, when I was smacked with a heart stopping twist. I was like, what the what? The story just elevated to romantic suspense-ish and I was drawned in. I couldn’t stopped reading. I was flipping through pages because man, the intrigue of this level of family dynasty, riches and fame is something you couldn’t run away from. It will pull you in with its drama, suspense, lust for power, money, fame or love, take your pick. This book have it and more. You will ask for more, that one is for sure. Also, can we talk about Pascal, that devious cousin of Olivier? I’m torn between hating him and liking him. He obviously hates his cousins and painted as the bad guy, but was he? I really don’t know what to think. This book is driving me crazy with its twists, turns, murder plots and suspense.
And of course, the title Discretion made more sense to me after reading it. And although this is a stand alone and end of course with HEA, I have a feeling that these characters will be seen on the next installment, Disarm. I couldn’t wait what will happens next to this Dumont family. I freaking love this!
Hot, sexy, and scandalous with a dash of suspense, Discretion by Karina Halle is the first book in her new series The Dumomts.
The chemistry between Sadie and Olivier is off the charts and these two fell in love fairly quickly, but can love conquer all of the secrets and lies that are hiding in the Dumont family’s closet?
ARC received by publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Discretion is a tangled web of twist turns and oh the Parisien delights,
OMG! just delightful and full of deliciousness that will make you quiver with joy. Then leave your jaw hanging wide open with all the sinfulness and drama that takes place.
As always I’ve fallen in love with Karina’s book.
The way she writes is like nothing else. The world building is great, it’s like you’re right there with the characters.
And, speaking of the characters, I love them, especially the main ones. Sadie and Olivier are just WOW.
And the feels? Ah, the feels.
A must read for anyone with a pulse!
A longer review will be up on my blog.

I have loved almost every book that I have previously read by this author but this book just didn’t live up to the expectation and excitement I was so looking for. The story had all the basics that made for a great romantic suspense novel but it just didn’t live up its blurb and description, for me it fell a little flat of its full potential. Olivier Dumont is from a rich well known family that own a fashion label and hotels in France. The Dumonts consist of Olivier his father, his sister, his uncle and his two cousins. Olivier runs the hotel side of their family dynasty while the others run the fashion label. There is a underlying sense of ruthless greed and want from the uncle and cousins that does become very clear in the story, but as for the excuse that is used to have total control over Olivier (as they have a secret hold over him) I felt it to be a little weak to say the least and made the story feel a bit out of date for a modern day romance.
Nevertheless I did really like the parts where the love story that blossoms between Olivier Dumont wealthy hotelier and Sadie Reynolds a young poor American student. They first meet when he comes to her aid in her time of need and it does become quite an intense read as their holiday romance becomes something more. It felt like all good fairytale stories where the prince rescues the damsel in distress. I absolutely felt their connection with each other so that I could engage with their emotions and feel all the hurt and distress that they both go through to do with their relationship but still it was not enough to make think that the villains of this book were believable.
This was just an ok read for me and I was so hoping for something more from this author.
Another hit from Karina Halle. This one brings a woman traveling through Europe who has been stranded by her cheating ex-boyfriend, and the hotel mogul with a family full of status and drama.
Olivier Dumont, part of the Dumont designer house, stumbled on Sadie as she was attacked while making her way to the train station. He swoops in to help her, and ends up keeping her with him in one of his hotels so that she can recover. The two give in to their attraction, but as with any good story, they will face some obstacles along the way.
His family secrets come to haunt them, and this first in this new series is without a doubt a must read!
