Discovery (The Orphan Train Saga Book 1)
By: Sherry A. Burton
5 out of 5 stars
The story Discovery (The Orphan Train Saga Book 1) by Sherry A. Burton is a historical fiction book. It is a story that pulled me in from the beginning and I found myself lost in a book that is both interesting and emotional. The story takes you back to a time when some in society were not sympathetic to the plight of orphans and when it seems that those orphans were considered disposable, unwanted, and unloved. This book brought tears to my eyes and I found myself thinking about it long after I had finished the last page. It is a story that touched both my heart and soul. I enjoyed reading about Cindy Moore. She thinks that she is tying up some loose ends regarding her grandmother’s estate. What she finds instead are secrets and discoveries that she never expected. She uncovers her grandmother’s past as part of the Orphan Trains and the details of her grandmother’s life. This is a story that is hard to put down until you finish the last page. I highly recommend reading it.
This is honestly one of the best books I have ever read. It has lots of history, some romance, and lots of good old fashioned mystery of what is going to happen next. I had previously been unaware of the existence of the orphan trains so this was very informative for me. I can’t imagine what those poor children went through, thinking that they were unwanted. For some it worked out well, for others not so good. This is the story of one of those children. And I just can’t wait for the others. I was a beta reader for this book and loved it enough to buy copies for Christmas presents.

Discovery (The Orphan Train Saga Book 1) by Sherry A. Burton
Discovery is the first Book in The Orphan Train Saga and a book I couldn’t stop reading till the end. The story captivated me and I had to know what happens next. There’s a little bit of everything from mystery, to history to drama and some facts. Cindy Moore thinks she’s just tying up some loose ends in regards to her grandmother’s estate. But what she finds is secrets and discoveries she never expected to find. What she uncovers is her grandmother’s past as a part of the Orphan Train and things about her grandmother’s life.i absolutely loved this story and can’t wait to read more from this Author. I highly recommend reading this book especially if you want to know what happens
Discovery by Sherry A. Burton is the first book in The Orphan Train Saga. This is my first book by this author and the story really peaked my interest. Her writing style was flowing and moving. The characters were fully developed and believable. The story was based on the Orphan Trains which I was not familiar with I will be looking into those stories now that I have read this book. The story is about Cindy and her Grandmother who passed away. It is the summer and Cindy being a school teacher has decided to go through her storage unit filled with her Grandmother’s things. Once CIndy starts looking at her Grandmother’s life, she sees a new whole side to her Grandmother. This story has taken me on a roller coaster ride. It is a touching story to see how a Granddaughter learns about her Grandmother’s life and how it affects her.
Thank you Ms. Burton for telling this story.

5 out of 5 Stars
This is a unique twist on historical story-telling and is a superb telling of actual fact. I absolutely love this book! I had ever heard of the Orphan Trains and was lost in this emotional tale. The ways that Miss Burton entwined fact with a little fictional was magical. This is a cleanly written story that I would be comfortable being read by younger readers as the language isn’t foul. This book is great for readers who have to be grabbed by a story right off. This one is a page-turner from page one! I cannot wait to read the next one!
I give Discovery (The Orphan Train Saga Book 1) by Sherry A. Burton, 5 stars.
Cindy’s grandmother passed away and unbelievably left her the house she owned and stated that all of her items be put into a storage unit after her death. Well, 7 years have gone by and she figures it is time to go through everything. Her grandmother was a cold, distant woman so it shouldn’t be hard to do. Then she finds a key that changes everything for her. Turns out her grandmother kept many secrets. This woman experienced many, many things during her younger years, beginning with being abandoned to an orphanage at a young age. But the stories just keep getting better. Cindy is finally on the path of learning whom her grandmother really was. But what does that really mean? Travel back to a time of complete hardships where you had to do things you normally never would just to survive.
I could not believe how good this book really was!! This is a new author to me so I wasn’t sure what to expect. She takes you in a wild ride of the early 1900s and she put you right in the front seat. I felt like I was right there beside Cindy as she read these journals. And the emotion!!! You really feel what her grandmother went through. The story and characters in this book are superbly written and I cannot wait to read the next book. I highly recommend it to every adult out there!
Discovery (The Orphan Train Saga Book 1) by Sherry A. Burton. This is an amazing book. I loved every page and I can’t wait for the next book. This is the story of Cindy Moore who is using her summer break from being a third grade teacher to go thru her Grandmother’s storage unit to clear up her estate. What she expects to find is a bunch ofmemories and things her Grandmother held onto but are mostly useless. What she finds is an amazing story. Little did Cindy and her mom know, her Grandmother was abandoned by her mother and sent to an orphanage to live. Her Grandmother was also one of the famed Orphans on the Orphan Trains. Why did her Grandmother not tell anyone about this huge part of her life? Why did she hold onto such a huge secret? The Orphan Trains are a historical event that I’ve heard of but didn’t know much about. Now I want to know all I can. I can’t wait for the next installment into the Orphan Train Saga! Part Fiction and a lot true history this book is full of amazing information that is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat!
This is the first book I have read by this author and I enjoyed it. This story kept me interested throughout the whole of the book and I was intrigued to see where the story was headed. Cindy is the main character and she pulled me right into her story of learning all about her grandmother and the questions she has about the life her grandmother lived. She’s determined to figure out about the lady she never knew and finding those answer are becoming harder to reach as she finds more and more of her things.
This story is a good one. I like that there is a transition between past and present and you never confuse the two because of how good the writing is. I am looking forward to reading more by this author in the future.
Happy reading!
Discovery (The Orphan Train Saga Book 1) by Sherry A. Burton is a historical drama. The story’s premise is based on the real Orphan Trains and the events that surrounded the orphan children of that time in America. Sherry did a great job of mixing fact with fiction and made it into something that you will feel all the way to your soul. It is definitely an emotional read and one that will make your heartache. You feel everything that the character went through, with her survival and hardships, love and loss, pain and longing and worst of all her suffering.
The story is told in the present by a granddaughter, who reads journals about the life her grandmother was forced to live. Set in 1921 we learn about one woman and everything that transpired in her life from the time she went to the orphanage. After reading what she went through, they have a much better understanding of the woman that they knew.
The story is well written and I look forward to the next book.
Discovery (The Orphan Train Saga Book 1) by Sherry A. Burton was was a pretty interesting read that kept me reading.
My first read by this author, I went in with an open mind, and just hit the grow running. I fall easy into this book, as it was well written, had a nice flow, and I liked the back and forth between past and present. I normally don’t read books like this, so it was a nice step out of my normal comfort zone. The were many different elements, that all came to gather for an original intriguing read. I like the MC’s voice, and the stories about her grandmother. It was a nice step back in time, and I fully enjoyed this read.
Overall this book is fit for all ages and it will take you back to a crazy time in this woman life. It’s a good way to see just how much we don’t know about or loved ones, like grandmothers. They are the closes strangers you’ll ever love. To end this book gets my super high recommendation and my stamp go approval.
Happy Reading

Discovery by Sherry A. Burton a four-star read that will take you back. This is the first story in the Orphan Train Saga and the story and characters may be fictional they history behind it is real, it was something I had never heard of before and will definitely be looking into it. Cindy Moore takes us along side her as she uncovers Melita’s truths and history that will surprise you and make your heart swell as you read. This will make you smile at times when you read some of the stories and then bring a tear to your eyes another when it reminds you of another part of your own history, the author brings you into the story and makes you remember your history while delving into others.
Discovery, the first book in the Orphan Train Saga, was amazing and I cannot wait to read the next book! I am officially hooked. Sherry Burton’s writing was amazing, and I didn’t know Orphan Trains was a real thing until the very end of the book. I googled it and am now very curious to learn more. The story was so well written, I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that its based on real people’s lives. The way the diaries were discovered was exciting, and the content was heartbreaking.
Cindy inherited the storage unit that held all of her grandmother’s belongings, after her mother was tired of paying on them for years. Cindy also paid for years, before finally deciding it time to go through them. She had most of it set out to sell, to make some money and recoup the storage fees, but the one item she decides to take home, opens a whole lot of secrets and mystery. It was a treasure hunt of sorts, leading her to some journals with very emotional stories.
I don’t want to give anything away, but highly recommend this book!
Burton has woven this historical fiction so tightly it left its mark on me once I turned the last page. My inner history buff loved uncovering this nugget of truth that so often gets glossed over. I found Burton to be a master storyteller, one whom grabs the reader immediately with grit and detail, not fanfare and hype. Loved every page and cannot wait to continue reading this series.
4 Stars
Discovery is the first book in The Orphan Train Saga by Sherry A. Burton. This book is a mixture of history, mystery, drama, fact, and fiction. While all the characters and situations in the story are fictional, the ‘Orphan Trains’ and the situations that brought them about, are quite factual. I was completely fascinated by the story behind the Orphan Trains, which play a big part in the story- but I really appreciated the extra details in the author’s note at the end of the book. Facts that really were quite emotional, and really grabbed me by the heartstrings- I really felt for all those children and what they must have gone through to end up on the Orphan Train, and for a lot of them, their hardship didn’t stop at the end of that journey.
Anyway, I digress a little. I read this story in one sitting- completely intrigued by the whole saga. The way Ms. Burton has blended fact, with her well thought out fiction, really held my attention. The story transitions from past to present quite seamlessly, going back and forth multiple times. So, it’s almost like we really get two stories in one. One is set in the 1920’s and the other in our modern day. It touches on secrets, discovery, hardship, friendship, family, love, understanding, and survival.
Cindy Moore never suspected that cleaning out her grandmothers storage unit would lead her on a journey of discovery and revelation. A doll. A key. And some journals propel her on a fact finding mission- a little detour from what she had originally planned. The story gets more intriguing the further it unfolds. As this is the first book in the series, I really can’t wait to find out what happens in the next book.
The story is well written, if not a little ‘formal’ or ‘stiff’ in places. But, this is a fairly minor issue which didn’t detract from my overall enjoyment of the story.
Emotive!
Thank you, Sherry A. Burton!
Discovery was an intriguing and fantastic 5 star read.
This was the first time that I have heard about the Orphan Train and once I started reading I couldn’t put it down.
We switch between past and present throughout the story. Cindy decides to finally go through her grandmother’s storage locker. As she is going through things she is discovering some secrets that intrigue her and makes her want to learn more about her grandmother’s history.
As the journals are read we get pulled into so many different things. My emotions were all over the place, how could children be treated this way. I don’t want to say too much more and give anything away. There is so much more I would like to see and all of the secondary characters added a great element to the story. Sherry pulls you right in with her writing and I can’t wait to read more from this series. 1-click and get started on this great historical read.

( The Orphan Train Saga
Book 1)
By Sherry A. Burton
This is a historical Fiction. This is a full novel, worthy of your reading.
Cindy Moore is a school teacher, who has the summer off. She has decided to stop paying monthly charges, for her grandmother’s storage unit. She plans to sell some of the items, in hopes of getting some of the money she has paid. During her sorting of said boxes, she finds some interesting journals. Written by her grandmother. That is all I’m saying about the journey that takes place in this fantastic story.
First let me say, I really do not like historical fictions. But this one involves children. There for it became a must read. The book Sherry A. Burton has written, was absolutely heartbreaking, loveable, and had many surprises. The many characters in this book, all have their own story to tell. I enjoyed reading this story, tears and all. My recommendation, if you read this book, is have tissue, wine and chocolate available. You can bet I will be looking forward to reading book 2! Well done Sherry A. Burton!
Discovery (The Orphan Train Saga Book 1) by Sherry A. Burton is a five star novel. I cannot wait to start the next book in the series. I absolutely love historical fiction and this novel does not disappoint. Years ago, I read a different historical fiction novel on the orphan trains and then did my own research because it was fascinating to me that they loaded up the orphans and started sending them out west. Many children’s hearts were broken and mine broke for them too. From the research I had done years ago, this novel seemed very historically accurate. This story depicts the life of a granddaughter trying to figure out her grandmother’s estate and finding so much more into her grandmother’s history than she ever could have imagined. Did I say already that I can’t wait to start the next one in the series because it is true!
Discovery (The Orphan Train Saga Book 1) by Sherry Burton was a super emotional read. I would give this book a five out of five stars. I was hooked from the second chapter and could not put it down. Cindy’s journey to discover actually had me wanting to call up my parents and just spend a ton of time figuring out their history. Sherry Burton did a great job of making me feel connected to the story and I really felt like I was going on a journey of discovery myself. The storytelling was phenomenal.
Discovery is the first book in Sherry A Burton’s historical fiction series The Orphan Train Saga. I got hooked on this topic when I read Lisa Wingates Before We Were Yours so I was so excited to pick up Sherry’s book and she did not disappoint! It was my first read by the writer and I cannot wait to pick up the second book of the series!
Discovery takes us back into the era of the American history when the society did not have any sympathy to orphans and they were considered disposable, unlovable and unwanted. The horrors they faced and the conditions they lived in … at times it is really hard to believe that we as human race have lasted that long …
The story is told through the history of Cindy Moore’s grandmother – Cindy is finally going through her grandmother’s possessions/junk that Cindy and her mother have been storing for years and this action opens the gates and takes us all to the journey into Grandmother Mildred/Mileta’s life … a life filled with secrets and fear and loss and triumph of the human spirit to survive almost anything …
The story is beautifully told and so detailed that you can close your eyes and hear and see it unfolding in front of your eyes. Be prepared to cry … be prepared to be enraged … be prepared to learn more about the history than you could ever imagine …
Discovery, The first book in the Orphan Train Saga was such a page turner and I found myself able to get lost in this wonderfully written story. Cindy Moore had to spend her summer uncovering what was in the storage shed that was once her grandmothers. What she finds are secrets that her grandmother had taken to the grave, she was one of the children that rode the Orphan Trains.
This book was amazing, and I felt so many emotions reading this book, sadness, happiness, and so much surprise. I had never heard of the Orphan Trains and after reading this I did a lot of research and was/am completely intrigued by this. I am beyond ready to read part two in this series, I highly recommend this five star read!
