There’s just one thing I know about the mysterious new man in my life: I can’t trust him. He’s annoyingly arrogant, hotter than sin…and working for the man who ruined me.So what if he’s the only one who cares enough to pay attention me? Who protects me from the world that turned its back on me?I’ve learned something being America’s most hated: the law is dirty, and Nick Law is no exception.
I think it’s easy to say that MCG really knows how to capture her audience. I was hooked from the first page all the way to the bittersweet end.
Nami is not having a good time. Her life is no longer her own, simply a shell of what it used to be.
Law is not taking no for an answer…. actually that might be the wrong message to put here. Law wants to help her find who she is again, by whatever means necessary.
Between the two of them, they do the absolute unthinkable. They find hope.
Highly recommend this read, just be prepared.
MCG never takes it easy on us, don’t expect her to start now.
* This book is now Dirty Law
I am a massive fan of Mary’s and was happy to read Elastic Heart/Dirty Law. Dirty Law is a story about pain, rape, suffering, love, and redemption.
Nami is a rape victim who nobody believed. Nami feels she has no one to turn to. She figures it is up to herself to take the Senator down for what he has done. But when Nami meets up with Law and finds compassion and truth in his eyes, she feels she has a partner in getting the facts out.
Dirty Law is a compelling story about finding the truth and getting it out no matter the cost.
What can I say… Wow-what a story.
Dirty Law was my first Mary Catherine Gebhard book and what a book it was.
This story had me hooked from the first page.
Dirty Law is an edge of your seat, kindle throwing, dark read but totally worth it. I loved everything about this story.
4.5 Dirty stars.
This is my first book by Mary Catherine Gebhard and I really enjoyed this read.
In this book, we follow Nami and Nick. Nick is really sweet and seems genuinely concerned about Nami and her overall well-being. He has the patience of a saint and I think was a great opposite to Nami. Now as for Nami, she’s a tricky one. I liked her I really did, but I just couldn’t for the life of me connect with her. I thought she was unbelievably strong and smart, especially everything she has gone through. But She was SO DANG STUBBORN. She was so set in her ways of thinking that everyone and everything was bad when one person, Nick, just wanted to help her see that there are good people in the world. Overall, the book drew me in and I really enjoyed this read. Though I do think that this book had so much more potential and it fell just a little short for me and kind of had my head spinning at times. I enjoyed the book and the story, but it just felt like it was missing something.
I received this eARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.
Mind-Blown. Exactly MY Type of Read.

“Feet don’t fail me now
Take me to the finish line
Oh, my heart, it breaks every step that I take”
Born To Die – Lana Del Rey
AND ANOTHER LANA QUOTE BECAUSE NAMI IS SPECIAL:
“I’m laughing as I’m taking my prisoners
And taking down names
I’m crying while I’m gunning
In the smoke they can hear me coming
If you were me, and I was you
I’d get out of my way”
In My Feelings – Lana Del Rey
What’s this book about? (I’m trying to give as little spoilers as possible)
Dark themes are discussed in this book, if the discussion of rape triggers you, be aware that this book goes into dark depths.
Nami DeGrace was raped and the perpetrator was never punished for his horrid crime. Months pass and she’s on a mission… Until Nick Law barges into her life and things start to change for Nami.
Mind you, I’ve just finished reading this book and I’m writing this right away. This might not make much sense… But you should know that I LOVED DIRTY LAW. Period. End of sentence.
When I saw the new cover and title for Elastic Heart, I was intrigued. Dirty Law was calling for me through my Kindle. I was reading something else and whenever I stumbled upon my library, it started calling for me, read me I’m your next best friend it said… That’s the Evil Witch talking. I had heard good things about Mary Catherine Gebhard from fellow readers. Her Instagram bio reads and I quote “Emotional Terrorist.” Dirty Law was my first read of Gebhard and I can confirm that her IG bio consists of facts only. I feel so many things about this book. When I finished it, I immediately added it to my favorites. Nami is an AMAZING narrator. I instantaneously empathized with her and I couldn’t put the book down. I admire Nami’s strength and perseverance through all of the drama that she lives through. She dives into darkness quite often in the course of the story and I. felt. So. FSHHSJSGJGSJGS. Sorry for her. UGH. I can’t even talk about it because it is so heart-wrenching and such a huge spoiler.
Nick Law. The Evil Witch would like to invite you over for some coffee. We need to talk. PRONTO. No further comment on him because… SPOILERS.
I’m not a professional writer, however, I was mesmerized by how this book was written. I idolize the taking no prisoners attitude. There were ZERO Fs given. ZERO. You heard? ZERO. I admired the tenacity. I saw the rating on Goodreads and I skimmed through the lower ratings to see what flaws people found in this PERFECT (FOR ME!) book, finding that some simply couldn’t handle this style of writing. It’s in your face. No shame. I have a habit of screenshotting words that I deem interesting in books because English isn’t my first language and I like to find new and obscure words to use in my own projects and Dirty Law has provided me with an entire list of words that I’d never heard of. Bifurcate? Complacency? Languorous? Lackadaisically? Eviscerate? GIVE ME MORE, I BEG YOU.
This Dark Romance was one of a kind for me. I have never read something this eloquent, emotionally stirring and important. There’s lots of rape (lots being an understatement, basically every Dark Romance includes some sort of rape, I figure) in Dark Romance books, but I’ve NEVER had it be dealt with like Dirty Law deals with it. Nami had me from the first sentence of the book to the last sentence of Chapter 23. ALL THE FEELS.
I really liked this slow burn enemies to lovers romance. We have Nami who was slowly dying because of a dark event in her life. She was all about the revenge that she needed. Law on the other hand is trying to help her thru it. She fought him every step of the way. I loved her moxie. She wasn’t giving up, but she wasn’t living either. I loved when she told us “law was my compass”. He was her map. He pulled her through.
4.5 stars – Memorable story that took my emotions for a ride. I considered the ways Nami and Law were introduced to be unique and attention grabbing. By showing Nami’s strength and grit while getting through something no woman wants to go through, MCG manages to put me immediately on Nami’s side, no matter how crazy her actions may seem later. Nick Law is the perfect salve after an asshole read. Law showed a compassion and tenacity during their first interaction that would serve him well as the story continued. His determination and perseverance in proving his belief in Nami is so hot to me. The push and pull of the characters kept the story moving and the pages turning as I needed to know what would happen next. There were some twists I watched happen like a train wreck that can’t be avoided and some that came out of nowhere. I also really enjoyed the way MCG was able to bring in aspects of shibari.
5 HEART WRENCHING STARS!! Wow….I read this book in one sitting. I absolutely loved Law and Nami….they touched every part of my heart. Their story is a rough one, but so worth your time and money. This author words are perfection in all her stories.
This book by Mary Catherine Gebhard is a quiet and intense read. It is one of those reads where if made into a movie no soundtrack is needed. You are constantly on the edge of your seat wondering what is gonna happened next. Law and Nami are great together.
Not sure how I feel about this book. There’s a lot going on, not just Nami and her wanted revenge for her rape, although I am a little disappointed about that because after reading the blurb, that’s what I expected! Her seeking revenge, but there wasn’t a whole lot of that going on because the story was so busy with other things too. She did try to seek some revenge but each time was stopped by Law, who just happened to show up every time.
And speaking of Law, I know it would be hard to write in a love interest for a rape victim, because they feel damaged after a rape, lost, and unlovable. They are vulnerable and not trusting. And that’s where I feel like I couldn’t connect with the characters. Every time Nami saw Law, she was either punching him, holding a gun on him or kneeing him in the nuts. And he keeps coming back to her like a stalker even after she had basically told him to piss off. He just keeps showing up. Then about 1/2 way through, they kiss..she freaks, knees him and runs away. Of course he still pursues her. Then later they kiss..which leads to sex. Which is no big deal right? Except that’s when Law tells her he loves her. All this, and they never had hardly any quality time together where they weren’t arguing or she wasn’t holding a gun on him telling him to leave. Lol! And they hadn’t known each other but a few weeks I believe.
I just couldn’t get into the romance between these two. At all. It was like there was feelings of love between them all of a sudden, highly unlikely from a rape victim and with a man who she herself said acted like a stalker in the beginning and she didn’t trust him.
Overall, it wasn’t a complete waste of time, but I do think that it could have been better.
