A “funny, heart-hammering, wise” (The New York Times) best-selling portrait of a family that will remind you why “to read a novel by Anne Tyler is to fall in love” (PEOPLE). Abandoned by her wanderlusting husband, stoic Pearl raised her three children on her own. Now grown, the siblings are inextricably linked by their memories—some painful—which hold them together despite their differences. … despite their differences.
Hardened by life’s disappointments, wealthy, charismatic Cody has turned cruel and envious. Thrice-married Jenny is errant and passionate. And Ezra, the flawed saint of the family, who stayed at home to look after his mother, runs a restaurant where he cooks what other people are homesick for, stubbornly yearning for the perfect family he never had.
Now gathered during a time of loss, they will reluctantly unlock the shared secrets of their past and discover if what binds them together is stronger than what tears them apart.
“[In Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant Tyler] has arrived at a new level of power.” —John Updike, The New Yorker
“Marvelous, astringent, hilarious, [and] strewn with the banana peels of love.” —Cosmopolitan

I loved the character development and an interesting story about family, growing into adulthood, and the emotional woundedness we all carry into our adult lives. What heals us? What leaves us stuck? I still have a few unanswered questions though.
My favorite of Anne Tyler, the most warm and fuzzy, but no less complex. Gotta love the one guy trying to hold the whole thing together…
This book will never leave you.
read this years ago…..another author who NEVER fails to inspire
over promised, and under delivered story development
I have enjoyed all of Anne Tyler’s books.
One of Anne Tyler’s best! Her older books are so much better than her newer books.
Characters are well developed with family relationships intertwined and have depth….Great read as usual!
Okay story. On the dark side not one of the authors better books.
I hate to say typical Ann Tyler but that’s what it was. If you like her way of telling a story, you won’t be disappointed!
I had hopes that this book would be an enjoyable human interest story. Instead it progressed from dreary to depressing until I finally had to stop reading it in the interest of safeguarding my mental health.
I have always been a fan of Anne Tyler and have read most, if not all, of her books. I believe I read this one years ago, but had forgotten a lot of the story. I remembered bits and pieces and was glad to read it again. She’s that kind of writer – you can go back and re-read her books and enjoy them as much as before.
This book shows a family raised by single mother who did her best, set in the 60’s. The 3 children all responded and grew up on different ways as we all do. So many things the author included made me think of my own childhood, just little images here and there. But when the oldest brother sets out to steal something valuable I had a hard time …
It began with a dysfunctional family and ended with the same one.
A sad story about a sad family but an interesting read.
This is a character-driven novel with a slow pace that builds and grows on you.
This is an absolutely marvelous novel about family and redemption.
Depressing
Reminded me of my own family
One of my all time favorite books.
