I loved the author’s Panic Series and really liked her Iron Clad Security books. So I knew her writing was good, but still went into this book without expectations and knowing only what the title gave away.
Only now, after I finished the book, did I read the blurb and must say that it sounds really good. I definitely would have expected a lot more from the story because of it.
It’s very unusual for me to give such a low rating because usually when I don’t like a book all that much, I dnf it. In this case though, the book was very short, still readable and not badly written; only the story fell too flat for me.
Lily was eighteen and an inexperienced girl. I was baffled when she made such a bold and slutty move on her best friend’s dad, Mr. bossy pants, and came on too strong on him. I can’t help it, it felt so inappropriate how she seduced him. I just didn’t like how she offered herself up to him like that.
I do enjoy taboo stories from time to time. But usually, despite the forbiddenness, they still feel right. In this case though, it all just felt so weird and wrong.
What bothered me most was how easy and fast everything happened. Considering that it was such a taboo with her being so young and the guy being an older, divorced father, it just didn’t click for me at all. There was no built-up, no connection to the characters, no chemistry or even some giddiness. There was no affection and no growing feelings. Everything was thrown in so suddenly to move the story along at a rapid speed. Although I had no expectations going in, I at least anticipated some feelings to build between the characters, but it was all about sex. This would have been fine if made right, it wasn’t though.
There were a few things that I didn’t particularly like. For example how Lily gave the man, who was more than double her age, parenting advice. Ugh. Sorry, but she didn’t even seem mature enough for me. It was more like a know-it-all teenager thinking she knew everything best. And how she saw it as a given that everyone would be okay with her relationship with this older man. *shaking head*
Since this book was so short, I can’t list all the other things I didn’t like because it would give the story away, but let’s just say that everything seemed unreal and ridiculous regarding Lily, as well as her annoying friend.
The book had potential and I think with a bit more story, development and well thought through processes, it would have made a much better story. Because the characters sure had their moments that I liked, e.g. their teasing ways. It was kinda cute really. But it wasn’t enough to make up for the not-so-good parts.
Full disclosure… I didn’t even read the blurb for this book before I picked it up. There’s only a handful of authors that I’m going to read the book regardless of what it’s about but Sidney Halston is one of them.
This book is so different from the series I’ve read but it was so good. There is so much heat in this forbidden romance I thought my kindle would catch on fire!! Linc and Lily shouldn’t work but I loved that everything about them did. I definitely wanted more of these two!!
