I was granted an ARC of Lisa Lang Blakeney’s “Diesel: A Sports Romance (The Nighthawk Series Book 3)” via Booksprout; I recommend this book to others based upon its own merits. All opinions expressed within this review are uniquely my own & freely given!
Until next time… Happy Reading!
This new release, a sports romance, is book 3 in the Nighthawk series by Lisa Lang Blakeney but can stand on it’s own with no problem. Even if you are not a sports fan (like me), this football player will steal your heart. He met his best friend, a girl from New Jersey, when they were both only 11 years old. Mason, layer nicknamed Diesel by Olivia, his bff and new next door neighbor, do almost everything together…she is one of the boys! They are inseparable in almost everyway but one until the day in their senior year that he sees her, not as the tomboy he loves but as a beautiful, strong woman that he wants to keep forever as his own. Their story is adorably sweet but how long will it last?
You have to read what happens next to truly appreciate this funny, sweet and sometimes tender love story that began so long ago. Diesel is a swoony, bossy man with a heart of gold and his Olivia can stand up to him any day of the week. Will this couple grow together or grow apart? I loved this book and recommend it. I did need a few tissues towards the end when I wasn’t quite sure how it would end. There are 2 previous books in the series, Gunslinger and Wolf which are both worth reading even if not necessary to understand Diesel. Ms. Blakeney is a talented writer from my neck of the woods and I have enjoyed all of her books..she’s a favorite of mine.
An advanced copy of this book was generously provided for my honest review.
I’m not really into sports books but, this was amazing. This author has a way of luring you in with her beautiful words. She got me hook line and sinker. Loved Mason and Olivia’s chemistry. Boy next door who also happens to be your bff. What could possibly go wrong or in this case right?
I really enjoyed this second chance romance. Diesel(Mason) and Olivia Are so sweet and just perfect together. Unfortunately, even true love doesn’t always get a smooth path and that is the case in this book. Drama, twists and time can’t erode the love they feel though and this time they are playing for keeps.
Diesel: A Sports Romance
The Nighthawk Series, Book 3
By: Lisa Lang Blakeney
Narrated by: Hayden Bishop, Jeremy York
When I listen to a book, I like to become enraptured into the story. Lisa Lang Blakeney has a talent to make each story unique and this one of the Nighthawks series had me completely invested in the story from the very start. I think it was the history of the couple. I loved going all the way back to when Olivia and Mason were kids and how their friendship was formed, how it grew and where it ended. It is nostalgic and gives the story that extra boost! Olivia is a great character. She is not afraid to be who she is and is unaware of her beauty both inside and outside. Mason is every girls’ dream. Super athlete, smart and so attentive and compassionate, is he too good to be true? It’s so easy to fall for both of them, and just want to push them together. It’s a wonderful sports romance, and my favorite of the series.
Hayden Bishop and Jeremy York continue their narration of the series, bringing the characters to life. This one was a little tricky with the different age brackets, but this team stepped up to the challenge, and their narration aged from 8 years old to grownup! It’s fun and quirky and their performance enhanced the story!

This was a quick read for me – I finished it in a couple of hours. Lisa used an interesting timeline to tell their story, I just wish it was longer. I felt like there were missing parts that needed more story development. I wish there was more to the end as well, it felt like it went too fast for me. There were a couple of spelling/grammar issues like using the incorrect ‘to’. I gave 4 stars for the story needing more development and the grammar/spelling issues.
Loved it
Both Olivia and Mason are solid, believable characters. Their story has a good, warm plot line. An enjoyable read.
I really enjoyed Olivia and Mason’s story.
3.5 star review:
A well written second chance romance with a nice storyline and plot. Would have liked more depth to it. Sometimes it feels too rushed. There could have been some explanation about what happens in the five years they are apart.
Characters well defined but there is a lack of chemistry and emotional connection.
I will still recommend this story because I like the series and the characters.
Amazing, I was in love right from the start. The only thing that I really didn’t care for was the ending it came upon me to fast and I felt like it was missing pieces. The characters are amazing in every word, they take your breath away and really grab your attention in this story. I loved the whole past, present and future aspect of the story. The first time I have seen or read anything like this from Lisa she completely blew my mind away. This is one story you MUST READ. Mason is drop dead hott and alpha in every way possible. “JG” Oilvia this girl really breaks my heart and warms it as the same time her love is really shown on her sleeve. They make this power house of a couple. Take my word for it and read this story you won’t be disappointed.
She moved in next door to him and they became best friends. He knew she was different and they soon fell in love but it all changed when she broke it off. Why? Will she give him a second chance? Will she explain why she left? Will they get together again? See what will happen

I volunteered to read this ARC for an honest review. Loved this story about Mason and Olivia. She just moved to a new town from Jersey and tries to play football with the boys. Mason is a big kid and says he won’t play with a girl. But she gives them a run for their money, until Mason knocks her down. Offering to ride her home on his bike, the two become best friends. This story is about how their relationship grows from football friends to, best friends to girlfriend/boyfriend. They go of to college together, but have some stumbles thanks to other people missing with them. But when his uncle tells Olivia that she’s the reason he’s no achieving his potential, she decides that she needs to set him free. This is a great HEA story. Really enjoyed it.

This part of a series but can be read as a standalone. We get the full Olivia and Mason ride to romance from their first meeting t 11, high school and college. I was expecting more of a second chance at romance but that part of the story was very short. I still liked the book. It was a cute when they were kids, angsty when they were high schoolers and college. College added some fun sexy times. The relationship grew as Olivia and Mason grew. I loved Olivia in middle and high school. In college she lost some of her sass. She made some sketchy decisions and doubted her relationship with Mason. Mason also made a few decisions that were not always right. He never doubted Olivia until the end . They both allowed pride and doubts get in the way. The ending felt a bit rushed. The story was mostly about the growth of the relationship through the years.

This was a beautiful love story with wonderfully crafted characters. The storyline entertained as the story played out. I loved everything about this story – from their first introduction to each other to their years in high school to college and beyond. The insight given by the snapshots of their budding friendship to their recognition of their feelings for each other to the heartbreak to the final moments will stay with me long after I’ve left this amazing story behind. I could feel their emotions through the author’s creative use of dialogue. I almost felt like I knew them personally. I am truly glad I’ve found an author who continuously writes romantic stories full of angst and love that connect with the reader. I’ve never been disappointed by anything she has written. I cannot wait for the next book. One of my favorite books of the year.
When Olivia is 11, she moves from New Jersey to Georgia – next door to Mason. As her and her mom are unpacking, she goes down to where a bunch of kids are playing football. Since she is a tomboy, she loves football and asks to play. A big blond-haired kid refused to play with Olivia since he doesn’t think she can really play. She gets him to play but he hits her hard. But she takes it and earns his respect. As he takes her on a ride on his mountain bike, she is enjoying going fast. He knows that Jersey Girl (his nickname for her) is unlike any other girl.
As they grow up, they become best friends. This book is broken down into quarters (like football) and follows them through middle & high school then college. Excellent book on following these two throughout their lives. Absolutely enjoyed their story and loved the layout of this book. Too often books briefly mention the childhoods but I loved their interaction as it gives you an idea of how they grow into adulthood. Seeing their closeness as friends and how they build into a relationship was interesting and heartwarming. Definitely want to read more from this author!

I loved this book from start to finish. I think I liked it more than the others in the series because I am a little like Olivia. As with a book like this that I can relate to and love I wish it went on forever and ever. (; I highly recommend this book from LLB and I would recommend you check out her other books!

Olivia and Mason are childhood BFFs turned teenage sweethearts but when Mason aka Diesel when he went Pro, Olivia felt she had no choice but to break up with him so he could go after his dreams. Fast forward several years later, Sports publicist Olivia Robertson moves to New York City for her new job working for the NFL team, the Nighthawks. Olivia thought she’d moved on from her ex, the sexy Mason Bridgewater. What’s Olivia going to do when she finds out that Mason, superstar wide receiver, has been traded to the New York Nighthawks AND her 1st assignment is to get Mason to do a PR campaign? Oh my. The twists, turns, angst, heartache, passions, drama, tension, sizzle heat, and romance is phenomenal in this 2nd chance at love romance story which brings together a great hero and heroine. Their chemistry is intense and yet healing at the same time. The love is sweet and cute. I dont want to give the story away so just know that this is one story you dont want to miss.
My Rating: 4.5 stars *****
Olivia and Mason are childhood best friends turned sweethearts but when Mason/Diesel when he went Pro Olivia broke up with him so he could go after his dream. They reunite years later and the spark is still there. Loved the connection and chemistry between Olivia and Mason. This is a well written, sweet second chance love story with well developed characters and a perfect ending.
