If you enjoy stories about uber-alphas, this is an oldie but goodie and a quick read. Rachel Jones has been hiding from her old life, one filled with heartache and painful, violent loss. When an injured Kel Sabin washes up on shore, unconscious and shot, Rachel’s first thought is that he must be a criminal. Then instinct and experience kick in, telling her otherwise. She suspects there’s far more to Kel than he’s willing to share, but he needs her help and she won’t abandon him in his weakened condition. As Kel’s shady and mysterious life catches up with both of them, Rachel and Kel give in to the passion sizzling between them. When the dust settles, Kel must decide if he can risk his love for Rachel and her life by letting her in to his world.
It’s small, but powerful. Probably a bit dated now, but a great story!
Audiobook: Narrator – Brenda Sweeney
I enjoyed most of the narration of this book with the exception of some of the narrator’s interpretation of the heroine’s voice. Her choices in how the heroine might say a line, that left no clue as to what the character was feeling, often left me disappointed in her performance. I felt she was leading me down the wrong path of what the character was truly experiencing and taking my own thoughts away from me. Despite that, I loved her performance of the hero as well as a couple of important secondary characters. Enough that I immediately went back and picked up her audio of their story.
This is a steamy, romantic thriller that kept me engaged from the very beginning. I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed this author’s writing and exactly why I started reading her to begin with. Rachel was fierce and independent but knew what she wanted. Unfortunately, just because she wants Kell doesn’t mean she’ll have him. He lives a life that puts those around him at risk and he refuses to do so to Rachel.
I loved the bit of push and pull between these two because they each had great arguments for doing so. I wondered how they’d ever work it out. There is a lot of action and drama from outside sources and a wonderful visit from Grant and Jane from Midnight Rainbow. Every one of these characters are very well developed within an intriguing case that defines danger.
This is classic Howard and I loved listening to it!

One of Linda Howard’s older contemporary romances but one of the best I have read. There’s a slow building love, some hot passionate sex and a little intrigue and mystery to round out the plot. I loved the slow build of the sexual tension, Kell’s alpha protectiveness over Rachel and Rachel’s strength. This is one I’ll read again in the future, probably many times.
I read this book when it first came out, and no, we aren’t talking about how old I am, keep your mind on the review.
I’ve always liked Linda Howard. I especially liked this story, because I’d read the previous story so I had some background. But even if you were just picking this story up on your Kindle or your e-reader, you wouldn’t need any background to understand involuntary attraction that takes over your thoughts. There’s a lot of that in this book.
And yes, I cried, but not at the end. About 20 pages from the end, I think. And no, I can’t tell you why, because that would give away an important part of the book. Suffice to say men are stubborn and women are far smarter. 🙂
