Devlin – Book One
As the second Blackthorne son, Devlin usually likes to stay out of the family drama, but with his family suddenly falling apart, he has one way to bring them back together. He wants to win the Southern Maine Sailing Invitational, like his father and uncle before him. He has built the fastest boat, he has planned for every contingency, except one…a beautiful blonde determined to beat him and avenge a family betrayal.
Hannah Reid is tired of watching the Blackthornes win races on boats built by her dad, especially after the family patriarch fired her father. She has only one way to get revenge, win the race. Unfortunately, Devlin Blackthorne is standing in her way. She wants to hate him, but Devlin’s love of the sea and brave, adventurous spirit mirrors her own, and she begins to realize that this sexy, charming man is hurting, too.
As they race to the finish, battling strong winds and family loyalty, Hannah and Devlin wonder if winning each other wouldn’t be the greatest win of all…

Devlin by Barbara Freethy is a wonderful start to this amazing series. The series is written collectively by seven authors.
Once I started this book I was unable to put it down, I ended up reading this in one sitting. In this first book we are introduced to the Blackthorne Family which by the way are carrying a big family secret. I’m sure as this series continues we will find out what it is. I myself can’t wait. As is Barbara’s style this book is very well written, the characters well developed and believable. Freethy makes you feel like you are right there with the characters and that they are our friends. I enjoy this story about Devlin and Hanna and am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series.
Who better to start off a new series written by 7 different authors than Barbara Freethy! The 1st book in this series did not disappoint! This was the story between Devlin Blacktorne and Hannah Reid. Devlin is in charge of Blackthorne Boatworks. He has worked his way from the bottom of the company to the top. While Devlin is supposed to be in charge of everything to do with the company, his father steps in and fires Frank, one of their oldest and most valuable employees. When Franks daughter, Hannah, comes back to try to get her fathers job back the sparks between her and Devlin fly.
I loved the family dynamics in the Blackthorne and Reid families. Barbara hints to a secret in the Blackthorne family that will be revealed as the series continues, and I can’t wait to find out what it is! The Reid family has had its share of struggles, but the love between father and daughter has stood the test of time.
After learning a little bit about all the Blackthornes, I can’t wait to read the next books in the series! This book was incredible. It was another fantastic read by Barbara Freethy!
ARC for honest review with no compensation
Devlin by Barbara Freethy is book 1 in the new series, 7 Brides for 7 Blackthornes by 7 fabulous authors and a great start to this series!
Devlin and Hannah comes together after his father, Graham fires her father Frank, a long time employee and chief designer with only a few weeks before the reveal of their newest, fastest boat at the Southern Maine Sailing Invitational which Frank and Devlin has won for the past few years…for a personal matter between Devlin’s parents. This is only the tip of the iceberg…
What happens next will keep you glued to your seat and reading faster to find out…if some things get resolved, if romance and love blooms, if relationships are repaired, breaking free of their parents shadows, irate employees and customers, learning more about the rest of my family and it dynamics just name a few…can’t wait for the next book in this series!!
As book 1 of this series, I enjoyed some of the family history and dynamics that had to be laid out so that it can play out through the other books. There are so many interesting characters in this series, not just the main characters. Nana is a hoot. And she sees more than she lets on. Frank, as Hannah’s father, will play a role in future books, I hope. I think the younger generation can learn from him and his mistakes. Although I am not a fan of Graham’s, I am looking forward to seeing how his story with Claire plays out in the background of the additional stories. Will he or won’t he redeem himself?
It seems each of the Blackthorne men are driven and determined. It will take a strong woman to tame each of them. I’m looking forward to seeing who’re able to tame the beasts.
Devlin Blackthorne
The new multi author series is off to a fantastic start with Barbara Freethy’s “Devlin”. Barbara introduces the Blackthorne family and gives us just enough information about the characters to leave us wanting more while also telling an interesting tale of Devlin and his relationships with his family and the beautiful Hannah, daughter of a long time coworker. No spoilers here but you will be captivated by this intriguing and creative story.
Hannah and Devlin have known each other since they were quite young because Hannah’s dad worked for Devlin’s dad. When her dad is fired, she comes back to town to try to get him rehired. There are sparks between the two but she’s coming off a bad relationship and he doesn’t feel he wants a long term commitment. They try to stay away from each other even after they have one night but the pull is just too strong. They have some things to overcome for a HEA which provides us with some laughs and maybe even a bit of frustration as they get there. Ms. Freethy does a great job with her characters and storylines and this is yet another well written book by her. I read an ARC and am voluntarily leaving my review.
Devlin is the first of our Blackthorne men that we get to read about. What is Devlin’s birth order amongst the men? Who is Hanna Reid? What is her grudge against the Blackthornes? Hannah is a spitfire. She starts out with a bang in this book, ranting at Devlin. Why? The tension in this book is so thick you could slice it like a loaf of bread. What surprising thing do we learn about the Reids and Blackthornes? I am realizing how much of a steamroller Devlin is. Oh my! What ultimately happened surprised me greatly!
RECEIVED THIS BOOK AS A GIFT FOR A FAIR/HONEST REVIEW and REVIEWER FOR Bloggin’ With M. Brennan.
Hannah is one sassy lady – loved her. Devlin is a great guy. What happens when these two cross paths? Loved how their story evolved and their relationship changed. Looking forward to the next Blackthorne.
I thought that this was a very entertaining read and a great kick-off to this series. Family drama and pure emotion are the driving forces in this book. Battle lines are drawn and tension is running high as Devlin and Hannah’s story unfolds. I liked both characters and I felt they had good chemistry. I could feel for both of them as they both struggled to do what they felt was the right thing, maintain loyal to their family and resist the attraction they were feeling towards each other. I look forward to more from this series.
I love these series where each book is written by a different author! I get hooked on the family & usually end up finding at least one new author to follow. Devlin by Barbara Freethy is the first in the series about the Blackthornes. The Blackthornes have a large business empire & own most of the town of King Harbor.
Devlin has taken over Blackthorne Boatworks when the manager retired. He did it with the understanding his father would stay out of it as little for as it stayed profitable. That’s why it surprised Devlin when his father fired their chief designer & long term employee, Frank, without explaining it to Devlin. Now, Devlin is dealing with the loss of a key employee, a family emergency, a major race, upset employees & irate customers. The last thing he needs to deal with is Frank’s daughter Hannah breathing fire. Then again, maybe he’ll enjoy dealing with Hannah.
Hannah can’t believe the Blackthorne’s fired her dad. He’s given everything to that company & they owe all of its success to him. Hasn’t he given up enough? He gave up his marriage & any outside life he could have had. She’s taken vacation & flown back to King Harbor from her home in Austin to help him get his job back. She’s furious with Devlin. Then she finds out things aren’t what they seem at first. If she’s so mad at Devlin, why can’t she stay away?
I loved this start to the series! It sets up the story for the entire family & then dwells into Devlin & Hannah. I loved the chemistry between them & they way they both were surprised by it. Hannah was amazing. She’s such a spitfire & isn’t afraid to confront anyone. You can tell she needs to learn patience & to make sure she has the entire story before initiating confrontation. Devlin isn’t happy to realize that he is becoming like his father with work being his life. He’s been hiding from hurt but Hannah awakens something in him. I really can’t wait to see how the stories play out & if Devlin’s mother can make his father come around!!
I absolutely loved this! A well written romance that hooked me from the very start! I loved the chemistry between Devlin and Hannah, loved the competition between them when it came to the racing, enjoyed their interactions and that of their families, cried in places, laughed in others and was left astounded as well. ( is the secret going to come out in another book maybe???) . Another great story by this author and a fantastic start to this series!
DEVLIN……Barbara Freethy
Hannah is furious at Devlin, it was his father who terminated her father. Telling Graham Blackthorne he was wrong, even his sons couldn’t do that. It is a personal issue between the two stubborn fathers, of what they argued about. Thinking she had been in Texas growing up with her mother. Didn’t know that the employees were like family. He was calm, five years older than her, stays
in the background. A dream now to win the Sailing Invitation, he built the
fastest boat. How long has it been since she been on the water or seen the
race.Or staying in town, which each encounter sparks fly between them.
Could she get the chip off of her shoulder, to see where the attraction could
lead. A nice flowing plot, and you love Devlin and Hannah.
Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
From the moment Hannah and Devlin meet, you just know that sparks are going to fly. I felt like these two were meant to be and even Devlin knew it before Hannah would admit it. I could not put this book down. It had a great storyline that kept me interested and very sexy situations for the characters. Definitely looking forward to reading more in this series.
I enjoyed this book so much that it only took me one sitting to read it! I could not put it down.
Devlin and Hannah’s story is complicated and complex, yet truly captivating. Each of them is fighting for their families and for themselves, yet they find a way to come together and discover that being their own person doesn’t preclude them from being together. I highly recommend this book!
Wow – what a way to kick off this new series and set the stage for the other books. The family dynamic and drama that unfolded in the first chapter alone has left me anxious to get my hands on all the books in this series.
This book focuses on Devlin and Hannah and even though Hannah wants this to be an enemies to lovers story, she can never quite bring herself to hate Devlin because he is really such a great guy. These two are both at a crossroads in their their lives, and luckily for them, fate has put them together in time for them to find their future together – even though neither one will admit to wanting anything more than a short-term fling, and it was even hard for them to get to that point! They both have issues with their families, and I loved getting to see both characters interact with each of their families. There’s some great history between Devlin and Hannah’s fathers that serves as a wonderful backdrop to their story. As far as chemistry, even the characters couldn’t deny it – it just took them a bit to agree to act on it any further than a few kisses…but so worth the wait!
Barbara Freethy has such a wonderful way with words and it’s so easy to be captivated by her stories. This was an easy read that still had tons of emotion and heart with the perfect mix of drama and romance to kick this series off properly. She artfully wove in the backstory for the rest of the Blackthornes and sets up a bit of mystery that I am guessing will be carried throughout the series.
This is definitely a book and series that deserves a place on everyone’s TBR shelf!
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book I received from the author.
From the authors who brought you the 7 Brides for 7 Soldiers series comes an all-new contemporary romance series, 7 Brides for 7 Blackthornes!
The 7 Brides for 7 Blackthornes series kicks off with Devlin by Barbara Freethy. I will admit that I’ve been a fan of Barbara Freethy’s books for longer than I’ve been an active reviewer. I adored her Callaways series and my love for her stories just snowballed from there. Her stories are a mix of sweet with heat romance and romance books…sometimes with a bit of suspense thrown in.
Devlin is somewhat the black sheep of the Blackthorne family. He’s not the workaholic that his siblings and cousins seem to be, but he’s still a hard worker. He’s a bit more aware of people, although he’s just as shocked by his mother’s declaration as all of the Blackthornes are. Hannah is in jeopardy of falling into her mother’s shadow where her career is concerned. Not quite sure where she sees her future, she rushes to her dad’s side when she feels he needs her the most. Will being a fling be enough for Hannah and Devlin, or will they finally break free of their parents’ shadows and find their own way…together?
NICUnurse’s Rating: I kind of fell in love with these characters. I started the book with some preconceived notions on how I thought Hannah and Devlin would be as far as their personalities. What I found out, however, is that I was nowhere near correct! There was a depth to both characters I wasn’t expecting. But if I had really considered this author’s previous character development, I wouldn’t have been so pleasantly surprised. I also loved the small-town setting. I also felt that Ms. Freethy did an excellent job giving just enough backstory to the characters and the families that it didn’t seem like an information dump, rather a very important piece of the story. I give Devlin by Barbara Freethy 4.5 out of 5 stars!
Now I’m even more anxious to see where this series takes me as each author has a unique style and voice.
What a wonderful start to the series. The author has written a great storyline and I fell in love with the characters. We got a brief description of the 7 Blackthorne’s and the immediate members of the Blackthorne family while getting a very in-depth view into the life of Devlin.
Devlin runs the Blackthorne boatyard located in King Harbor. He lives for the open sea and loves his carefree lifestyle. But when Devlin’s father fires his right hand man, Frank, it not only devastated him, it cripples the business and brings Frank’s daughter Hannah home to check on her dad. Devlin and Hannah haven’t seen each other in years and to say their reunion is strained, due to her father being fired, is putting it lightly. Throw in two stubborn fathers, one fiercely competitive boat race and life in King Harbor becomes anything but dull.
This is a fun, heartfelt storyline that had me smiling throughout. 2 Thumbs Up and 5 Star for a very romantic read.
