Sometimes revenge is the road to salvation.
Louie Thorne understands this. When her parents were brutally shot dead in their home, Louie found the strength to go on only by armoring herself with the quest for vengeance. She found the criminals that took everything from her–and ended their lives–despite what it cost her.
So when fellow huntress Diana Dennard crosses Louie’s path, in pursuit of … crosses Louie’s path, in pursuit of a dangerous pedophile, Louie refuses to interfere. She understands the need governing Diana’s every move–even if the woman’s methods toe the line of madness.
As Lou is dragged into Diana’s hunt, Diana’s mask slips. The game turns dark. Suddenly the bad guys aren’t Diana’s only target and Lou finds herself between a dangerous and conniving psychopath and the ones she loves.
Will Louie’s dark power be enough to protect them? Or will the coldest heart win…

Another sleepless night. Totally worth it. This book was a little darker than past ones in the series (about sex trafficking children, so of course). But who better to take care of the creepiest of the creeps than Lou Thorne? Then there’s the action and awesome characters I’ve grown so attached to in this series. The romance between Lou and Konstantine is really beginning to develop too, and I love it! I hope there are a hundred more Lou books in the works. I can’t get enough. <3
As is the case with most series, this book will be most enjoyable and understandable if you start with Shadows in the Water and go through the series first. Then you will understand the relationships among the main characters and how they got to the present moment shortly after Book Four’s ending. You’ll also know the checkered past between Lou and Konstantine, the frightening experience that led to Dani’s PTSD, some background on La Loon, how King became one of the best PIs in NOLA, and how the relationship among Dani, Piper and Lou developed. Although the book can be read as standalone, it would not be as enjoyable. This book has much more tension between the many violent and passionate moments, and also more emotional content than previous books. The writing is clear and straightforward and the storyline is engaging. The last chapters are hard to stop reading until you reach the thrilling conclusion.
The enigmatic entity Lou Thorne, a paranormal vigilante with a very unusual set of sidekicks – both human and not – returns once more, in Book 5 of the outstanding Kory M. Shrum’s Shadows in the Water series, the aptly-named Devil’s Luck.
This fantastic tale reveals many unexpected and sometimes attractive facts, about our most thrilling anti-heroine, including her relationships with Konstantine, Mel, Paige, the PTSD-scarred Dani,Olivia and more, plus a glimpse of Lou’s raison d’etre, in both the worlds she inhabits.
Yes, surprisingly, Lou is actually human, though enhanced with a special talent, that sees her called both devil or angel, by those who benefit from, or are overwhelmed by its frequently malign power.
New girl on the block Diana Denman is likewise a vigilante, although limited to waging war on her enemies, albeit using her tech skills to embezzle the cash she needs to find her mercenaries and covert lifestyle. She and sister Blaine initially reach out to Lou via the office of King’s detective agency, with a new case that Diana belives will give her closure, on the subject of the hatred she’s kept in her scarred heart, boiling like acid within it.
So atmospheric and mesmerising is Devil’s Luck, that you won’t give the terrors of Covid-19 a second’s thought, or succumb to the Lockdown Blues, while you keep one eye on shadowy places nearby and the other, subconsciously in your imagination, on Jabbers as she waits patiently on the shore of that alien lake!

Oh, wow. This was just such an exceptional book. I have always loved the Lou Thorne series but this book was above and beyond. I really enjoyed seeing Lou as she struggled with her humanity and being faced with the empty darkness that she could have become. I love that we got to find out more about La Loon. I just absolutely loved reading this book so much.
