NAMED OF THE BEST ROMANCES BY OPRAH MAG!Although beautiful young widow Phoebe, Lady Clare, has never met West Ravenel, she knows one thing for certain: he’s a mean, rotten bully. Back in boarding school, he made her late husband’s life a misery, and she’ll never forgive him for it. But when Phoebe attends a family wedding, she encounters a dashing and impossibly charming stranger who sends a … charming stranger who sends a fire-and-ice jolt of attraction through her. And then he introduces himself…as none other than West Ravenel.
West is a man with a tarnished past. No apologies, no excuses. However, from the moment he meets Phoebe, West is consumed by irresistible desire…not to mention the bitter awareness that a woman like her is far out of his reach. What West doesn’t bargain on is that Phoebe is no straitlaced aristocratic lady. She’s the daughter of a strong-willed wallflower who long ago eloped with Sebastian, Lord St. Vincent—the most devilishly wicked rake in England.
Before long, Phoebe sets out to seduce the man who has awakened her fiery nature and shown her unimaginable pleasure. Will their overwhelming passion be enough to overcome the obstacles of the past?
Only the devil’s daughter knows…

I love Lisa Kleypas’ historical romances because of the depth and quality of her research. It doesn’t hurt that she packages that research into a fabulous love story.
We first met West Ravenel some books back in the Ravenel series when he was introduced to us as the pot-bellied, soft, wastrel younger brother of Devon Ravenel, Lord Trenear. But West’s character began to undergo some changes and it’s all come to fruition in the latest book as West meets Phoebe, Lady Clare, a beautiful young widow and the daughter of characters from the Wallflower series.
Phoebe wants nothing to do with the man who bullied her late husband when they were schoolboys, and West thinks himself unworthy of such a fine woman. I enjoyed how their relationship developed slowly rather than with instalust, and how each character uncovered the hidden strengths in the other.
Lisa Kleypas is an autobuy for me and has been since her very first novel was published. She continues to produce outstanding historical romance and I would recommend her to readers seeking an introduction to the genre.
Ms. Kleypas is a master at pulling us into the middle of a romance and making it impossible to leave.
What I really loved about this book? The HERO. I think it might be the best reformed rake story I’ve read.
West Ravenel is my romance book husband. Him, above all others.
I love Lisa Kleypas and she delivers with this one.
But you cannot jump in with this story.
In order to appreciate this, you must read The Wallflowers series and then all of the Ravenels leading up to this.
Why? Because West grows and changes, and it’s his development over the Ravenel series that leads us to Devil’s Daughter.
Devil’s Daughter is steamy, swoony, and absolutely charming.
Oh, West, I’m so glad you grew into the good man you were always capable of being.
Lisa Kleypas blows my mind with everything she gives her books. The perfect amount of humor, steam, action, and family all in one place.
I love the background she gives every scene from the winter topiary garden to the description for threshing machines.
West and Phoebe are wonderfully alive, and Phoebe’s ability to show West the love she has for him is resplendent.
“Everything about you is pretty. These are marks of a life well lived, and risks taken, and miracles you brought into the world. They’re signs of having loved and been loved.”
The love West gives back to her, even through his fear, is inspired. I can’t wait for Ms. Kleypas next book, her writing always gives me a soft, sweet afternoon with characters I’ve come to love like family.
I always enjoy LK’s books and I like this series.
I’m the biggest Lisa Kleypas fan ever…so hard to give anything she writes less than 5 stars. The best part about this story was revisiting the characters I love so much from A Devil in Winter. Sebastian is now a sexy grandfather who is still crazy in love with his duchess. We should all be so lucky! HIs daughter (Phoebe) falls in love with West who doesn’t feel he’s good enough for her. My problem is that I wanted to see more of Sebastian and Evie then Phoebe and West! Still a fabulous read and classic Kleypas. I’m looking forward to the next in the series and will likely read it in one sitting (as I did this book).
I have been waiting for this book since Cold Hearted Rake was released and I fell in love with Weston Ravenel. In my opinion, he is the best character to come out of this series, followed very closely by Sebastian Challon.
I wanted to love this book, and for the most part I did – West’s wit never fails to make me smile, and having Sebastian there to add his special brand of color definitely put this book near the top of my LOVE list. The other characters were just as engaging, especially Phoebe herself. I just felt like the story was too contrived, and extremely rushed at the end. As happy as I am that they found their HEA, I wish the ‘final moment’ so to speak had been expanded a bit more.
That being said, this is easily in my top 10 books of all time, and comes in at number 2 behind Devil in Winter for my favorite Lisa Kleypas. It’s definitely worth the read, and I strongly recommend the audio version – Mary Jane Wells is a gift to historical romance.
A favorite author who always delivers. Part of a great seried
5 ASTONISHING MAGNIFICENT WONDROUS STARS*****
I absolutely loved it! Oh my heart…that West Ravenel is too dear for words. I am insanely happy that West got his HEA with Pheobe. He deserved it, even when he though he did not. Though Pheobe thought to think bad of him because of what Henry, her dear departed sickly husband had to say, she found that she could forgive his childish bully ways towards Henry and find a true and honest man now. I loved how he was with her and especially how he was with the kids. It was a delightful pleasure to read about everyone again. Pandora getting married to Gabriel, Sebastien and Evie still so much in love, Seraphina with her wise words and Ivo, oh do I love that boy! Lol. I pray earnestly that we will have a book about him in the coming years. He would be awesome to read about. I could go on and on and on with all the secondary characters making an appearance. It was that good! I believe we have Tom’s book next and I cannot wait to read all about it. There is something to that man, he almost seems so sad…Anywho I will leave this review with one of my many favorite quotes.
“I want you with my entire body.” West dragged his mouth over hers, shaping her lips before settling in for a rough and ardent kiss. He hitched her up against him until her toes barely touched the floor. “You’re all I think about. You’re all I see. You’re the center of a star, and the force of gravity keeps pulling me closer and I don’t give a damn that i’m about to be incinerated. ” He rested his forehead against hers, panting.” (cue faint) awwww the feels, this man evoked.
Superb again Ms. Kleypas…absolutelyfabulouslysuperb!!!!
West is my favorite Ravenel!
I always love Lisa Kleypas’s books!
Absolutely hit the spot, and as always, it’s wonderful visiting with characters introduced earlier in the series. To get the most enjoyment out of this book, you’ll definitely want to have read The Wallflowers series and caught up on The Ravenels, otherwise there may be to many names to track.
West Ravenel. What is it about a man with such an insatiable appetite? This book grabbed me by the heart and held me close. I was wiping away tears at the whole Stephen Armstrong backstory. Loved, loved, loved it.
Kleypas delivers another beautiful, romantic novel with deep, delightful characters and a perfect HEA. (And of course another chance to swoon over Sebastian.)
This is a great book with characters a reader can relate to. I love West and was excited when I realised that his story was finally going to be told. In this book he does not have a many humorous one liners as he did in the other novels but I think that was because the situation meant more to him than anything had happened to him before and he approached it was more gravity. I like the relationship that developed and appreciated the insights to how the financial and legal matters as it relates to women were viewed during the period. I enjoyed this book and recommend it for anyone who likes a good love story.
I’m a HUGE fan of Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas and it’s one of those books that I’ve reread a jillion times and pretty much consider flawless. It felt like coming home to read about Sebastian and Evie’s daughter. I fell in love with her inner strength and grace. I especially love how West is her equal and what a treat he is!! I stumbled across this one by accident–don’t know how I missed the announcement and it was a thrilling, heartwarming surprise! Oh, to write like Lisa K!
I loved the Devil and his Daughter…
Back in the olden days (3 years ago) I was able to read five (5!!!!) books a week. Now, I’m lucky to read one. Don’t feel too bad for me, I am coping with this loss by supplementing the shortfall with a lot of audio books. It makes me a little sad though, that a book that would normally have taken me 24 hours, took me five days to read. I wanted…needed to read Devil’s Daughter quicker, but life got in the way.
By the end of the first chapter of this story, I knew I was in for a treat. Of course, I didn’t have to get that far before I realised, after all, it is a Lisa Kleypas. There’s something magical when you step back in time with Ms Kleypas. It’s always like your catching up with friends for a chat. In this case, it was very good friends I caught up with.
On that thought…how dare Sebastian and Evie get older. It makes me feel older because I recognise Sebastian’s silver at the temples on my hubby, and the slight crinkles around my eyes probably look very similar to Evie’s. So, the fact that we get to catch up with Sebastian and Evie AND see history repeating itself (not really, but kind of) brought a goofy smile to my face.
Phoebe has survived heartbreak and now is on the path to falling for a bad boy…does that sound a little familiar???
It’s actually not that similar to be honest. Phoebe’s heartbreak is because she’s a widow bringing up her two boys without her beloved husband. West, well, he was a bad boy…but he’s on the right path and dragging his reputation kicking and screaming behind him. So basically, both Phoebe and West are battling their pasts to find a happy future.
Devil’s Daughter is my kind of historical romance. The characters were lovable, the glimpse of the past was riveting, and the battle of the classes is frustrating to observe. It’s quite humorous to see men’s need to feel superior over women. I hate seeing the snobbery, social-climbing and what lengths people will go to for the power of a good name. It seems inconceivable that even in your own home you aren’t afforded privacy. I love the dresses, the furniture, formal sit-down breakfasts and wedding parties that last for days. All these little things seem different but were the realities of the time and very fascinating to me.
The romance story between Phoebe and West was fairly slow moving. Once it does hit the sheets…I mean floors…and walls… it gets decidedly fast. There was an initial physical attraction, but Phoebe knew of West before meeting him and was convinced she wouldn’t like him. West spent nearly the whole story loving Phoebe but never dreaming of keeping her. He was convinced he would sully Phoebe and her wonderful boys with his terrible reputation. Phoebe spent years acting perfectly calm and reasonable and now it’s time to move on from her late husband AND his death-bed wishes. West must be the one to accept and realise they were perfect for each other and meant to spend the rest of their days together.
If you’re a fan of historical romance Lisa Kleypas is a master and definitely worth checking out. I highly recommend you go back to the beginning, though, and check out the Wallflowers. Sebastian and Evie’s story is only one part of the best historical romance series I’ve ever read. If you have read the Wallflowers, you may be interested to know that we get to catch up with them all a little in this one.
The ending was a little abrupt, but I have my fingers crossed that Ms Kleypas has plans…BIG PLANS. I would not be opposed to a novella or two, checking in with The Ravenels to see how they’re all fairing. Hint, hint, nudge, nudge…Ms Kleypas. LOVE YOUR WORK!!!
I have always liked the character of West Ravenel – in book one he is a drunk with little to recommend him. Then we learn of the awful childhood both he and his older brother Devon survived. Once his brother decided to take on the estate and make it profitable, West was the key figure. He worked hard and along side the people to understand their issues and problems. The selfish uncaring man who cared for nothing turns into a responsible loving man with a mission. His only flaw is not forgiving himself. He meets Phoebe, Lady Clare, who married her childhood sweetheart, Henry, even though he was ill with no cure. Now a widow for two years, with a four and one year old sons she decides to marry Henry’s cousin Edward as promised. But meeting West at the marriage of her brother Gabriel to West’s cousin Pandora awakens the romantic woman she pushed aside. Through twists and adventures they both realize their only future happiness is together. It was wonderful to read about the other Wallflowers and see how Sebastian (Phoebe’s father) takes a hand in bringing the two together!
Oh My Goodness! Words can’t describe how wonderful it is to return to the characters I love! So many years ago I picked up my copy of Devil In Winter, my first ever Lisa Kleypas novel. That story captured my heart from the get go and that is the reason I read and am dabbling in writing Historical Romance today. Here we are years later, literally and story-wise, where we meet the devilish Sebastian, Lord St. Vincent all over again; however, he has something much more beautiful than before, his lovely daughter, Lady Phoebe. It’s her time to shine and to find her long lost love! I absolutely loved her tale, the romance and oh the passion is so vibrant throughout this whole book! Yes, you guessed it, Sebastian does protect his daughter, but in the end, will he allow her to have her own romantic tale? You will absolutely love this tale, I most highly recommend this book and the whole series!
