Everyone knows Gwendolyn and Hamilton are enemies… what happens when the whole school finds out their secret?
Gwendolyn Adams has been canceled.
The Preston Prep Devils made that clear after the incident that forced my sister, Skylar, to leave our academy. They wanted me to leave, too, but I refused. I’m sticking around to make sure they follow through on the deal the snobby, elite crew of … sure they follow through on the deal the snobby, elite crew of jocks made with the administration.
The arrangement is simple. No one ever speaks about what happened to Skylar again, and no one gets punished.
But that’s not exactly true, is it? I still get punished, each and every day that I walk down the halls. No one speaks to me. No one looks at me. No one even admits I exist.
It doesn’t matter. I know what they did. And I know who’s in charge; Hamilton Bates.
Handsome, smart, and ridiculously privileged.
He’s the lead Devil, and my hatred for him is all in the details.
All it takes is one slip, one heated argument, one mistake, and everything gets even more complicated.
We get complicated.
Is this love or has the Devil found a new plaything?

Hamilton Bates is the absolute worst. He is the type of character that you love to hate. At least, in the beginning that is who he is, and then things change. You grow to love him. You come to see why he is the way that he is and then you begin to understand. Gwen is the opposite. You begin to care about her from the start. She is a strong person who will do anything to help those she loves. Even if that means that she becomes a social outcast. For her, Hamilton used to be a friend and teammate. But once it became clear that she didn’t actually come from the same social stria that he did, he dumps her like she is dirt under his feet. When they are thrown together again, there are explosions, battles, and eventually an understanding between them. I love, love to see how their romance blooms and grows and because of that, he is able to change. Not only himself, but the way things are done in the school. This book deals with adoption, mental health issues, enemies to lovers, and gives you that happy ending that makes you go all soft inside. This book is highly addictive and difficult to put down once it is started. Angel Lawson and Samantha Rue have come together to create a book that is breathtakingly beautiful, addicting, and puts you through a series of emotions from anger to sadness to love. I hope that they will continue this partnership and give us more books.
This was a good enemies to lovers romance story. Gwendolyn holds Hamilton responsible for what happened to her sister Skylar after all, Hamilton is the leader of the Devils. There’s a lot of hate, competition, regrets between Gwen and Hamilton but under all of that there’s more. They are forced to work together and in so they realize that there’s something deeper. Their relationship is a challenge all on it’s own but there’s other factors that come into play. There was definitely a lot of back and forth between the two of them. I loved the chemistry between the two of them but I was tired of all of the regrets afterwards especially, when they kept sleeping with each other. I enjoyed how Hamilton stood up to his father and did what he needed to do for him. The ending of the story wrapped up nicely but it was hard to believe that Hamilton’s dad accepted things between Gwen and Hamilton so easily when he didn’t do the same thing for his daughter. I’m looking forward to reading the next standalone in this series.
Addictive, arousing, and full of angst, Devil May Care is a well written enemies-to-lovers dark romance. Hamilton Bates is the epitome of anti-hero: spoiled, arrogant, and ruthless. Academics, athletics, and creativity come easy for him. Most women fall at his feet. But none of that is enough—he needs a challenge and only the feisty Gwendolyn Adams can give him that. Pity she is off-limits and everything his father despises.
This book checked a lot of boxes for me: vibrant characters entwined in gripping drama; wonderful use of language and humour; slow burn romance; and emotionally evocative. It should probably come with a spoiler warning for anyone who hasn’t seen the first three seasons of Stranger Things, but otherwise, I highly recommend it!

At first, it took me a bit to get into the book but when I got past that, I could not put it down!
“‘Fight with me tomorrow…Fight me all week, for all I care. But don’t fight me right now, Adams.'”
The hate between Hamilton and Gwen is REAL. The hate-to-love is strong in this book and I’m here for it! This is a book where you will hate Hamilton. He’ll frustrate you and make you want to throw the book away, but that’s the beauty of him. It will be like you’re the one in a hate-to-love slow-burn relationship with Hamilton. Your love of him will keep to itself until suddenly it hits you in the face –as Gwen does to Hamilton–and then you have nothing to but accept that Hamilton is glorious and that that charade he puts up is nothing but a front.
“‘Never happened. All my fault. You hate me. I’m the worst. Hasty post-coital exit.’ He sweeps his own bag from the ground, throwing it over a shoulder. ‘There, covered all the bases for you. I’ll go ahead and take the last one.'”
As for Gwen? Well, she just captures your heart from the beginning. She steals and doesn’t give it back. Gwen knows exactly what she wants and what she must to do get ahead. She’s prepared to fight for her family, no matter the consequences to herself. She has a savior complex and while it has been done so many many many many times, it doesn’t feel like a trope. We get to see why she is the way she is. Why she feels like she has to be the protector. And finally, why she doesn’t bother to protect herself to the same extreme.
“‘She’s nothing like you. You’re a pain in my ass. You drive me crazy. All you ever do is argue with me. And as much as I hate it–‘
‘You like it.’
God, I really really do.”
Their story isn’t sweet. Their story has you at the edge of your seat, filled with dread over knowing that at some point everything will be revealed. Their relationship doesn’t come easy. This story will have you laughing at some points and then frustrated the next. You want Hamilton and Gwen to just stop being so frustrating and realize that they are perfect for each other. That they push each other to be better not just for the relationship but for themselves. I really enjoyed watching both of them grow together and separately. It’s been a bit since I read an actual bully romance –not just a hate-to-love with some bullying sprinkled in– and I honestly couldn’t put it down once I got into the story. Hamilton and Gwen captured my heart and refuse to give it back.
I really enjoyed this book and I can’t wait for the next book in this series and who it will be about.
I love everything that Angel Lawson puts together, and this was no different. YOu have to read this book!
This book is brilliant! I love enemies to lovers and this book was perfect. Hamilton and Gwen’s story is absolutely beautiful within this trope, they where friends, but then he dumped her and after a while, they find themselves again. This story got me from the start, I love it, every chapter of it, Angel Lawson and Samantha Rue did a magnificent job writing this book and I absolutely need to get their next one. More than 5 stars if I could!
Hard hitting from the start. Loved it!
He is the topdog of The devils that run Preston prep. He controlled everything.
She is merely the girl who tried to save her sister, and in her honesty ended up on the receiving end of their wrath.
But times are changing, and so must they all….
I wanted to love this, having not read the authors before, but I struggled to find the desire to finish this book and not just walk away.
The characters didnt excite me, or set my heart on fire. I just couldn’t connect with them.
There was nothing wrong with them perse, they just simply didnt do it for me.
On the upside the story appealed to me. The situations and scenarios were believable and the prep school setting was right for them.
For that reason I’m giving it a slightly higher score than I initially intended, 3.8 stars from me.
This book was awesome! Had me hooked from the beginning and I didn’t want to put it down. Hamilton had Gwen cancelled after an incident with her sister Sky at a party and no one at Preston Prep was allowed to talked about it. Sky had emotional issues and was sent away to get better. The Devils are the kings of Preston Prep and it was Hamilton who was in charge. Hamilton and Gwen have known each other since they were kids. After finding out that all of Gwen’s family isn’t blood, her and her family are outsiders. The family are close and love each other.
Gwen and Hamilton were competitive about getting the captain of the swim twin and both wanted it pretty bad. After being forced to be co-captains together, they end up being late for class on day and are given Saturday detention for five weeks. Being forced together bring them closer together, at first competitively and both very stubborn. They fight their attraction to each other at first and one day, he challenges her to admitting she is attracted to him and she does. So begins their sexual relationship and it get steamier and steamier. They get closer and closer together, but not without some bumps and trust issues. They know that all Devils won’t approve of their relationship and keep it between them.
And one of the devils, Heston, puts up some pictures meant to hurt her brother and Hamilton finds them and they argue. Heston gets Hamilton caught with evidence in his hands and Gwen see this, and doesn’t let him explain, instantly believing he did it. She has finally had enough of Preston Prep and leaves school, finishing up online. Hamilton goes into downfall mode and stops taking care of himself and distances himself from his toxic relationship with his dad. They learned about themselves and learn that she has to learn how to forgive and he has to learn to fight to get what he wants in a good way and not how he was raised. As they come into themselves, he is ready to fight for her and she is ready to forgive. And they do, rebuilding their relationship, and become closer. Hamilton’s family finally changes and Gwen’s family learns to accept him and that he has changed. They are finally together and I hope their is more to their story!
