Hell was never so sweet … Enjoy this Special 20th Anniversary Edition of USA Today bestselling author Sue-Ellen Welfonder’s beloved, Romantic Times Award-winning debut romance, Devil in a Kilt – a story as tempestuous, colorful, and passionate as medieval Scotland itself… coldhearted devil, and a marriage hotter than hell!
Linnet MacDonnell is the youngest of seven sisters, and not the family beauty. With her flame-bright red hair and gift of second sight, no man wants her. But the devil will take her. Bartered as a bride to her father’s sworn enemy, the powerful Highland chieftain Duncan MacKenzie of Kintail, she has no choice but to enter a marriage with a man rumored to have murdered his first wife and said to possess neither heart nor soul.
Forbidding and proud, Duncan MacKenzie, the Black Stag of Kintail, wants one thing from his new bride – to use her special gift to determine if young Robbie is truly his son. He never expects the MacDonnell lass to stubbornly follow her heart, chase away the darkness in his castle with light and laughter, and ignite a raging fire in his blood. How dare she him defy, and tempt a devil like him to feel what he fears most of all – love!

Duncan MacKenzie wanted only one thing from his new bride Linnet MacDonnell, her gift of sight. He wants to know if Robbie is his true son. Duncan is a man haunted by his dead wife. She and Kenneth, half -brother have wreaked havoc in his and his Clan’s lives. Linnet has always heart the Duncan called a cold hearted devil with no heart. Linnet soon discovers young Robbie and quickly discerns his true parentage, but wants Duncan to come to love them both for who they are. I loved this captivating adventure story of a wounded Duncan who feels he has no heart, he doesn’t want his heart broken again, and he can’t let anyone in and get close to him. Linnet is a loving woman and deserves to be loved and have a family, but can she overcome Duncan’s resistance? Linnet stands up to Duncan at every turn and he can’t help but fall for her and her fiery spirit. An excellent story I voluntarily read and wrote this review.
A wonderful 20th anniversary edition! So first lets make that clear. This is a reissue of a previously released book. As the author notes she made very few changes.
Now for the story.
First thus us a medieval Scottish historical romance. The story is well written with characters you’ll love or love to hate. The villain I still wondered even though I read this one 20yrs ago, I still wondered if he could be redeemed. There are many secondary characters you will love and be eager to see again. The 2 main characters, Duncan and Linnet, are outstanding. Duncan has long been a favorite hero of mine. And young Robbie well, he’ll melt your heart. These are flawed, wounded characters, they are not perfect, they are human. They make mistakes. They learn. Linnet is a strong heroine who I have always at times wanted to shake yet I’ve always understood her actions. Duncan is an alpha hero who doesn’t believe he is redeemable. These two lost souls find a love neither expected. Fans of true medieval historical romances especially Scottish ones, not fluff historicals, but true historically based romance will enjoy Devil Ina Kilt. There is a sensualty to this story that is very well written. So this is not a sweet romance. There is violence, danger, romance, love, peace, sensualty and more. And I’m so happy to see this 20th anniversary edition available. Highly recommended.

“Special 20th Anniversary Edition”. *An re-issue of her previous book*
I read this book 20 years ago. Ms. Welfonder, is one of the reasons, I enjoy Scottish Historical Romance.
This is Linnett MacDonnell and Duncan MacKenzie, the Black Stag of Kintail. And what they story! Their Sensuous relationship along with mystery, danger, colorful and adventurous.
Medieval Scotland at it’s best. The characters are engaging and believable. The storyline will keep the reader intrigued, turning pages and on a wild ride through Scotland. Ms. Welfonder, has a way with her vivid descriptions and her powerful knowledge of Scotland. Highly recommended for fans of Scottish Historical Romance, Medieval era, sensuality, yes, it is sensuous, but well told. A must read for adventure, suspense, love and a little bit of magicical deliciousness. I loved as much today as I did 20 years ago, maybe, a more. Definitely a keeper!! Well done Sue-Ellen Welfonder!!
Thank you for bringing your stories to your readers.

I am a bit leery of medieval historical romances set in the Highlands, as I worry I am going to have to throw the book aside while loudly groaning “No, no, no! They didn’t wear kilts back then!” Which, of course, begs the question why I even picked up a book called Devil in a Kilt… I am happy to report our hero does not wear a kilt. He does, however, wear tartan, which may or may not be anachronistic. The jury is out on when the various clans started adopting plaid as identifiers, but there is no doubt that tartan patterns have been around for yonks.
Anyway: my scepticism soon floundered and died as I was swept away into this beautiful historical romance featuring Duncan, a fearsome warrior known as the Black Stag, and his bride, Linnet. Not exactly a love affair to begin with, Linnet is handed over to Duncan as ransom for some of her very unloving father’s men. Duncan wants Linnet because she supposedly has the sight—and because everyone tells him she’s plain and our fearsome warrior doesn’t want a wife to love and like, he just wants someone to care for the child that his first wife gave him. Except he doesn’t know if it is his child, which is why he needs Linnet’s more paranormal qualities.
Linnet is wonderful. Despite years of being scorned by her father, she retains a strong sense of self, to a large extent boosted by the fact that her brothers have always loved her and protected her as well as they can. Said brothers have also ensured Linnet is not defenceless, and other than the Sight—a rather uncontrollable gift—she is also a skilled healer and equipped with a heart large enough to welcome even big, surly Highlanders.
Duncan’s heart has been savaged in the past by his false wife, by his treacherous half-brother. He has decided it is best to keep this sensitive organ in a deep freeze, hence his desire for a plain wife. Silly man. He soon discovers that under all that grime and all those sad rags her father gave her, Linnet is beautiful—even more so because of the kindness that shines through her eyes.
The man struggles with his fears of loving again. The woman struggles with her fears of never awakening a reciprocal love in the husband she is falling in love with. And to add further spice, that evil half-brother is not done with Duncan. Not at all.
The story plays out against the magnificent backdrop of the Highlands and a well-researched historical setting. I will definitely look for other books by Ms Welfonder! Warmly recommended!
As the seventh daughter of a seventh daughter, Linnet MacDonnell was gifted with second sight. When her boorish father betroths her to a rival clan leader, her heart is filled with anxious thoughts. She longs for a loving union, but the rumor is that Duncan MacKenzie has a cold heart and is marrying her only because of her gift of insight–he has a son and wants to know if he is in fact his own. Will Linnet be able to give him his answer, and open his heart to love once again?
Secrets emerge of Duncan’s first wife and her infidelities’ that fractured their marriage. Her untimely death left many questions amongst the clan, will the truth will out? A rogue half-brother wages war on the clan and the battle between brothers intensifies. Linnet has started a thaw of Duncan’s icy heart–but will the raging battles end their chance for true love and nix his chance to open his heart once again to the son he longs to love?
Author Welfonder weaves a steamy tale of emerging love in the midst of a broken family’s dark secrets. The tumultuous past and sordid betrayals threatens their budding love–will kindness, loyalty and determination overcome the obstacles? A story of romance that promises to warm your heart–Devil in a Kilt, highly recommended!
I read this book when it came out,20 years ago it was great reading then and it’s still a fantastic book! It’s in the year 1325 Highland Scotland, and Magnus Mac Donnell has promised Linnett, his daughter to Duncan MacKenzie in marriage, Duncan was married once before and it was said he had killed her. Linnet is the 7th daughter of a 7th daughter, and is said she has the second site, that is the reason Duncan wants to marry her. He has a son Robbie who he wants Linnet to tell him if Robbie is his son of his brother son, as actions between his read wife and his brother. Duncan MacKenzie is known as the Black Stag, and is Chiefian of his clan, and Linnet have a rough start getting o know each other. There was Romance, mystery, in the story and Highland drama the secondary people in the story were wonderful adding to the story,Jamie ,Linnets brother and her maid Elspeth I enjoyed. This is the first book in a series and if you love a wonderful Highland romance with exciting sexual activity, that added to the book, Sue Ellen Welfonder writes a fantastic story and I gave this book 5stars,I enjoyed this book as much the second time reading as I did the first time 20 years ago. I received this ebook as a ARC for my honest opinion and my review is honest as I can be.Wish I could tell you more of the plot ,but that would ruin your reading pleasure.
This is a long book, but worth reading. I liked the main characters as well as the side characters. I would love to read not only about more Mackenzies but Linette’s brothers as well. The highest compliment I can give is that I am ready to read book two.
