All 7 book box set temporarily free on a Bookbub Deal – quite the bargain! Excellent yet wacky series from another Minnesota author. This author has written an impressive number of books in multiple series so lots more reading in your future.
Each book’s central characters Dev Haskell, an alcoholic woman-loving private investigator, his alcoholic lawyer Louie Laufer, and his friend Heidi, a woman who loves alcohol and sex and keeps bailing Devlin out of jail, and their nemesis Detective Norris Manning who keeps accusing Dev of committing different crimes. They find themselves enthralled in different situations that involve them with sleazy characters like Nikki, a Russian sexy woman who hires Dev to find her sister, Mr. Swirlee who hires Dev to find out who crashed into his car, Kiki who comes after Dev with a knife and the Bombshells and Hasting Hustlers, roller derby teams. Each book stands on its own and always has at least one murder. Dev usually meets his employers in bars as he is drinking his lunch or dinner. He always ends up in bed with one or two of the females. I recommend the book if you let Dev, his drinking and having sex and his employers and their problems grow on you. I look forward to reading the rest of his books.
Faricy’s character Dev Haskell has quickly become one of my favorites detectives. Dev likes to work outside the box, but he gets the job done. I find the plots and characters well developed making the novels a pleasure to read.
The first 7 books in a wholly original and addictive PI series. A great sense of humor runs through all the books, with crazy and loveable characters.
Like the characters and twists. One tale had much to much “pawing” but it skipped over most of it with fast fed. Will continue reading the series…like the wry humor of main character’s situations.
There are some funky titles to the books, but each one is very original and unpredictable. Definitely page turners and hard to put down. Great to read on your vacation or any time you just have time to relax and enjoy reading.
Good read, unpredictable
Short, easy reads.
Dev Haskell is a well rounded character. He gets beaten up, set up etc, you never know what he is going to get into! I love this series of books.
Always good for escape! It’s fun from time to time to see what Dev’s up to. Would be a good friend to have I think!
Enjoyable quick read.
I LOVE this book! Can’t wait to read more about the same character!
Very well written, and not predictable at all.
Dev is an interesting character and entertaining to read about, but the stories all follow a similar path. I haven’t decided yet if I will purchase additional books in this series.
If Dev Haskell were a dog, he’d be a free-roaming lovable, sometimes smart but sometimes incredibly dumb male golden retriever who licks balls, eats garbage, jumps or people, tries to hump women, and has mats, fleas, and smells like booze. But fortunately for the reader, the human Haskell also gets himself involved in some complex plots involving some very nasty characters that he untangles in his own unorthodox way.
Although I originally intended to read the books one after another, by the 3rd one I decided I couldn’t handle a 7-book Dev diet any more than I could eat fast food everyday. Instead I alternated these books with others and found that worked very well.
I read this entire series, and finished the last one with the same conclusion as the first one: “How can this guy be so stupid?” Dev Haskell wanders from one ridiculous situation to another, and comes out smelling like a rose. The story lines are pretty good, if bizarre, but the “romantic” aspects of Dev’s life are just boring. Dev is pretty hard to identify with unless you are down at the heels and a guy who drinks all the time and hops into bed with every female he encounters. I finished the series dispirited, thinking “this guy’s never going to amount to anything!” If you like goofy and irresponsible private eyes, this is your guy!
A PI who is always getting into trouble! Humerous!
Fantastic collection of the first seven adventures of St. Paul private investigator.
Dev Haskell is a wonderful character. Not your typical hero, but a real character. The plots are original, the stories are well-paced and the hero is believable, because he doesn’t have super powers, but deals with challenges as best he can.
At times, I would have to stop reading because Dev was being so stupid I could not keep on. It must be difficult to keep a character like Dev alive and functioning but somehow he made it through all 7 books unharmed and breathing.
