This an EXCELLENT story. Kind of reminds me of the old “Nancy Drew” and “Hardy Boys” books, of course with a paranormal twist. Plus you have to also update the story. Although I am far from being tween or even a teen I still thoroughly enjoyed this.
I love the world that Ms. WaterRaven has created here. The fact that magical creatures are known and the effect that is having on society is very believable. The characters are so amazing. I love Ares, however he has a lot of things to figure out. The Detective is probably my favorite character. Quirky and unassuming, he often steals the show with very little effort.
I’ve recently read this book with my book club and I absolutely loved it. The plot is very well thought out and the characters are relatable and warm, something hard to accomplish when crafting a supernatural character in a book.
Although the book could use another round of editing, I really felt immersed in the story. I absolutely loved Detective Docherty and his air-headed intelligence. The story centers on one particular case the characters are trying to solve, yet the author mastered putting in other witty subplots, that shamelessly interacted with one another. I’ve already downloaded the second book and would recommend to anyone who is looking for a fun, paranormal read.
It took me a while to get into this book, but once I did, I enjoyed it. For me, the pacing was slow, but I was fine. I would read the rest of this series.
The character in this story I enjoyed the most is Detective Docherty. Every time he came in, I always had the actor Jim Broadbent in my head. It was the way he played Horace Slughorn. I felt he was there to lighten the mood in the seriousness. I felt he was rounded enough for the story, but I wanted to know more about him. I did not feel satisfied with what little we had.
Alex was my second favorite. At first, I was not sure if I would like her, but once I understood her more, I liked her. I thought it was interesting how she was introduced. You did not know she was a Wiccan (or witch, I could not make out which one) until later in the book which I enjoyed. I do not know if the clues were sprinkled in, but I did not catch it until Alex said something about a meeting or class to her roommate. I felt like Alex could have been more rounded.
Ares was my least favorite character. I felt like he was the most rounded. There was something about him I did not enjoy. It may be his personality itself. It was nice how he took care of Detective Docherty, by working on the website, taking care of the office fish, clientele, and overall mentality. Ares’s background was interesting and his view on what is going on in Canada.
The concept of this story is interesting. I enjoyed learning how magical creatures and humans evolved in living in harmony. The rules on how to interact with certain creatures were a neat concept. Each creature is unique, like people. They must inspect the property before building for magical creatures is neat.
I enjoyed this book. It differed from what I have read. I recommend this book to anyone who loves magical creatures.

I’ve read a lot of Urban Fantasy books, but this one stands out among them as inventive and different. Sure, sure the genre conventions and tropes are there. Sure parts of it feel like they’re Harry Potter done better. Sure it involves a detective. But you know what? It takes place in a wonderfully imaginative world that takes cues from mythology all around the world and applies them in a cohesive way that blows my mind and puts celebrated world builders like Jim Butcher to shame.
The book has its flaws, but for being as brave, bold, and imaginative as this book and series is those flaws are easy to overlook or miss altogether. It’s definitely worth a read.
Crack open this book to join the Great Awakening and see what I’m talking about.
