All he sees is weakness and failure, a man who allowed his father to manipulate him for years. A man who turned on his … A man who turned on his own cousin in order to please the man who’s always looked at him with disappointment in his eyes.
So, when his cousin comes to him for help, Matthew knows that he will move heaven and hell in order to regain Tristan’s trust and prove himself a man worthy of respect and love.

Seeing the fear in Adelaide’s eyes, Matthew vows that he will teach her how to stand tall again, how to speak without fear, how to live a life full of laughter and love. Long ago, he lost his heart to her and he will do everything within his power to not only protect her, but to see her happy again.
And perhaps one day she will deem him worthy of her love.

I’d rate this 4.5 stars. A happily ever after delving into family abuse and coming out the other side to find healing.
I enjoyed this along with the others in the series I have read. Recommended!
I love all her books
We can learn many lessons from this story. Matthew was a man who was deceived by his evil father. Now that his father was dead and Mathew’s eyes wide open now he had to fight (literally) to maintain his sanity. His cousin Tristan knew very well what his father was like for Tristan had himself been a pawn in his hands. Then there was Adelaide. Her own father was not much better than Matthew’s had been. However, Matthew’s experience allowed him to be able to protect his wife, Adelaide, from her father and help her become stronger, to stand up for herself and not back down from her father’s anger. I love the way Bree Wolf portrayed these characters. They were very believable. She allowed a way that these situations can be dealt with from several different angels. We can all be encouraged by this story. I can easily recommend reading this book.

Matthew and Adelaide each grew up with mental and physical abuse from their fathers. A consummate gambler, Adelaide’s father uses her hand in marriage in a card game. Compassionate and kind Matthew agrees to win her hand. Once he wins the only way to protect her is marriage. A growing love and the anticipation of a kiss bind them together. Only Adelaide has a secret that could break Matthew’s trust. A surprise and a twist in a another touching love story in this series.
Love her books
It was a wonderful story. A love from afar by a man who doubted his worth and a woman damaged by emotional abuse. You don’t need steamy scenes to appreciate the love between this couple. There is a surprise in the story which was unexpected; the woman’s secret. The story moved along well, holding interest. There were no real OK already!! moments. I would like to read a story about the heroine’s brother John, who carries scars himself.
As always,Bree’s books are wonderful
A great read that pulls you in right from the start. Adelaides father gives her away in a card game. Matthew is asked to go against the guy in a card game. Can he win her hand. This is a delightful read, that captures you and takes you to a different world. I absolutely loved this must read.

I really enjoy all of Bree Wolf’s books but especially her Love’s Second Chance Series. All of this series is excellent. Each of the books has a number of elements that make it entertaining, and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
This was distressing to read. When I was about a third of the way in, I did not think I could finish the book. I am glad I did. It is hard to express the damage that the Earl of Radcliff did to his daughter Adelaide Cartwright. He terrorized her with his anger to force her submission. She grew up shutting down her emotions so she could survive. Despite her father, Adelaide was kind and loving. She doted on her niece Tillie. When the Earl gambled Adelaide’s hand in marriage away, the man who won the card game was like her father. Due to the love of her grandmother and her friend Lady Beth Elton, they figured out a way to save Adelaide from a horrible fate. Matthew Turner, Baron Whitworth, became Adelaide’s knight in shining armor. They wed so she could escape her father. The Earl was furious because he was to financially gain from Adelaide’s marriage to the other man. Matthew had his demons. He father was a ruthless man who cared nothing for anyone. He was greedy and loved money and status above all else. A situation of life and death came about and that opened Matthew’s eyes. He realized he did not want to be like his father. So, when he wed, he feared his own anger. He would never raise a hand to any woman but that did not mean he would not act out. After he wed Adelaide, he realized how much she feared him. She did not trust any man. Matthew with his demons and Adelaide with her secret, he tried to forge a path for them. He wanted to be happy. He wanted Adelaide to trust him, not to fear him. It was not easy. Adelaide was so messed up with fear, she knew no other way to behave. Then Adelaide’s grandmother, who had always been her champion, held a secret from her. Too many secrets, too many worries, too many fears. This is a very emotional book. It is an easy and quick read, moderately paced. It held my attention from page to page. As painful as it was to read about Adelaide and Matthew, also about the Earl, her brother John, her mother and Matthew’s mother, it had a most satisfying end. The conclusion was not over the top and was very realistic. This is an inspiration to read. The way the human spirit can overcome tremendous odds against it, is amazing. I enjoyed reading this and highly recommend it.
Love this series and enjoy the authors books.
This was a very good historical romance. I loved Adelaide and Tillie. I loved how Adelaide and Mathew came to know and love each other. This is a fun book. You do not need to read any other book in the series to enjoy this story. I received a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.
I love Matthew! I was not prepared for him to get his own story and wasn’t sure what I would think of him. He is so kind, caring and patient. It is beautiful! Adelaide and Matthew get to find their HEA and it is sweet. Adelaide has a lot to work through, but I loved the woman she became.
I would suggest reading book 6 before this one so you have all the back story on these characters and can understand them better. This book was still good on its own, but the extra info adds a lot to the story.
Two characters damaged by their fathers find love
I enjoyed this book because it wasn’t just a downtrodden a woman being thrown into a bad situation by an unfeeling parent. We had the hero who was just as damaged by his overbearing and deranged father, who had led him to think his cousin was a terrible person who needed to be exposed, when he was, in truth, a kind and gentle man with a forgiving nature, fortunately! The cousin introduced him to the woman, who needed a decent spouse ASAP, to avoid her father’s selfishly despicable plan. The cousin couldn’t believe he was so lucky or deserving, since he had been admiring the woman from afar for years! Not only did the story end well for our newly married couple, but the woman’s hideous father came to an understanding of how he had damaged his family, when he learned that his first wife had left purposely with his daughter and gone into hiding to avoid living with his detestable rages and uncaring behavior. He had assumed them dead and remarried, making his new family just as miserable! He repented, although too little, too late.
This is such a beautiful and wonderful read. He has loved her from afar but now he is being asked to save her from her father plans to marry her off.
Adelaide needs a hero and thanks to her friend Beth she gets one in Matthew. Though Matthew is afraid to love someone he can’t help but step in and save her from a marriage due to a wager by her father. But troubles will arise and Adelaide will have to overcome her fears in order to have a happy marriage.
The 12th book in Bree Wolf’s second chance series. I would say it’s her best work yet, but then I say that after reading each one. The very gifted author has a way of putting words to paper and creating a story that is so spellbinding and emotional with twists and turns from beginning to end.
Adelaide is emotionally scarred by an abusive father and is rescued by Matthew who has his own demons. He saves her from being a pawn in her fathers gambling addiction by marrying her to keep her safe. As the story unfolds our hero and heroine find strength, trust and love.
This will make your heartbeat!! Such a lovely story of two people meant to be together. This series of books continues to deliver a different romantic journey and promises to make you sigh! Bree knows how to write a superb regency romance book. You will not be disappointed!!
