In this Regency romance by USA TODAY bestselling and HOLT Medallion winning author Bree Wolf, a fearful lady and a shamed lord find their lives forever entwined by a hand of cards.England 1807: MATTHEW TURNER, BARON WHITWORTH, can no longer bear his own reflection in the mirror. All he sees is weakness and failure, a man who allowed his father to manipulate him for years. A man who turned on his … A man who turned on his own cousin in order to please the man who’s always looked at him with disappointment in his eyes.
So, when his cousin comes to him for help, Matthew knows that he will move heaven and hell in order to regain Tristan’s trust and prove himself a man worthy of respect and love.
Terrified of her father’s temper, LADY ADELAIDE has lived a life of complete obedience. Still, when her father threatens to gamble away her hand in marriage in the next card game, she turns to a trusted friend for help.
A plan is hatched and put into motion to save Adelaide from an unfortunate marriage…by tying her to a man who would never hurt her. Still, Adelaide is afraid – terrified! – of marriage, of men, of life…even though her new husband shows her nothing but kindness.
Seeing the fear in Adelaide’s eyes, Matthew vows that he will teach her how to stand tall again, how to speak without fear, how to live a life full of laughter and love. Long ago, he lost his heart to her and he will do everything within his power to not only protect her, but to see her happy again.
And perhaps one day she will deem him worthy of her love.

5 stars
I received a free copy of the novel Love’s Second Chance Series book #12: Destroyed & Restored The Baron’s Courageous Wife by Bree Wolf and this review was given freely.
Matthew suffering from regret, insecurity regarding his self worth and nightmares after a duel gone wrong vows to do anything his cousin Tristan requires.
Coincidence and a threat to use Lady Adelaide as collateral at a card game embroils Matthew the Baron Whitworth in a marriage of convenience to the woman he has been secretly attracted to. Complexed, interesting and easy flowing this novel focuses on such topics as legitimacy and birthright vs blood and emotions as the true meaning of family and recovering from abuse. There are some twists and secrets but the end is ultimately heartwarming.
I don’t know how she does it, but Bree Wolf has done it again. Another wonderful, romantic, witty, straight from the heart story of love and acceptance. This is the 12th book in Bree’s Love’s Second Chance series and I have read every single one. I have never been disappointed and have fallen hopelessly in love with this and all the other heroes in these books. However, if I had to pick just one I would pick hero number 12 Matthew Turner.
Matthew has loved Adelaide from afar for a long time and finally has a chance to meet her, but first he has to save her from her father. Lady Adelaide’s father is a gambler and a drunk and has wagered his last coin, but is he empty handed and underhanded. He wagers his daughter’s hand to a notorious gambler. When Matthew gets wind of this, he turns to his cousin Tristan Turner for help.
Together with friends, they devise a plan to win back Lady Adelaide’s hand through Matthew. If he wins, the only recourse to keep Adelaide safe is to marry her himself.
So, will Matthew win the hand of the fair Lady or loose her to a gambler and lech? If he does win, will Adelaide agree to marry him for protection? If you enjoy clean, historical romance, you will love this wonderfully romantic story.
I received a review copy of this book from the author; all opinions in my review are my own.
I’m giving this 3 stars (okay) as while the language is very good, I cannot honestly say I really liked this. If you are in the mood to read a very quiet, sedate story this fits the bill (therefore recommend).
Adelaide and her mother have been browbeaten by her belligerent father for years, making Adelaide quite meek. However, among her friends she is less retiring. Her friends design a rescue plan when they learn her father intends to wager her hand if need be. So Matthew comes to the rescue.
I found the start of their rushed marriage rather odd. They didn’t know each other and while she was acted like she was afraid of her shadow, Matthew did not even try to court her or talk with her.
3.5* A little repetitive but overall a very good story of two hurt people finding love and grace together.
It moved pretty slowly. By the 60% point in the book the pace became agonizingly slow.
I wanted to like this. It sounded like a good “learning to overcome the past” book. Alas, the writing was incredibly repetitive. Over and over again we got to read the various angsts the h and h suffered. Her fear-filled eyes and his clenched fists … oh dear.
Truly, a good idea of a series, but the writing leaves so much to be desired, I had to stop after a couple chapters.
