“A heart-warming, sigh-worthy romance.” –Collette Cameron, USA Today bestselling authorIn this regency romance by USA TODAY bestselling and HOLT Medallion winning author Bree Wolf, a broken war veteran and a reluctant spinster come to see that sometimes the most painful scars are the ones we cannot see.England 1806: SIR FREDERICK LANCASTER returns from the war with France a broken man, … with France a broken man, guilt-ridden over the loss of a friend who’s been like a brother to him all his life. Then tragedy strikes again, plunging Frederick into a darkness he fears he’ll never escape, and forces on him a life he never wanted.
As the new Marquess of Elmridge, he is duty-bound to find a wife and father an heir. However, once that task is completed, he’ll finally be free to return to the battlefield and end his miserable existence.
A sound plan if ever there was one.
At least, until his mother chooses spinster ELSBETH MUNFORD to be his bride.
After an accident almost took her life, Ellie’s beauty is tainted by ugly scars, ensuring her a place on the shelf as far as society is concerned. Still, despite the tragedy she’s suffered, Ellie has remained a vivacious and caring young woman, who refuses to do one thing: give up…on herself or anyone else.
Least of all her new husband, a man she’s secretly loved for as long as she can remember.
Before Frederick knows what’s happening, he catches himself thinking of his new wife day and night. Her gentle kindness and unfaltering strength call to him, stir his pulse and awaken a long forgotten yearning for love…and life.
But what about the last step of his plan? Will Ellie find herself a widow soon? Or will Frederick risk everything and open his heart to her?

I was delighted to find that this book was not your typical romance with a little challenge thrown in. The characters were well developed, the little “plants” here and there in the story line kept me engaged in guessing just “who done it” and how. The passion and romance were clear and sweet but kept clean, which was definitely a huge plus. This one was definitely a page turner and excellent read.
Really good characters, with a dose of tragedy mixed in with optimism. Brought it out of the ordinary for a historical romance. But I did think it got to happily ever after a little fast in the last part of the book.
This was a pretty good book. I remember liking it. But I’ve read a few books in between now and I’m more likely to remember a book that annoyed me than one I liked. Unless I like it so much I go and buy the other books right away.
It is a great book! Could not stop reading it. Wasn’t exactly sure how it was going to get to the happy ending, which I expected.
Bree Wolff writes wonderfully. Always the ending I need but the characters are challenged to get there.
Really loved this book, will be looking for more like it!
An excellent story! Fun to read.
The story is very well written and very detailed. It’s about tragedy, loss, pain, rejection and love. Most of all its about hope and family.
Too much tragedy!
I’ve enjoyed all of the Bree Wolf novels that I have read. I like her heroines and the heroes who prove themselves good enough for them.
Good read!
The female lead character in this book demonstrates remarkable sensitivity to human emotions; remarkable in contrast to the usual run of Regency heroines.
It was pretty good. It was a fast read. I read all three of this series.
Loved it so much… I could not put down until the end!!!
Explored the depths of grief thoughtfully and realistically.
I enjoy reading this author very much. Have read several stories by her and would like to read more.
People need to realize that war is about killing or being killed. The horrors our soldiers see and endure on the battlefront leaves scars on their minds, & souls as well as their bodies. They need love, peace and acceptance without questions when or if they return home.
It was a good romance.
Not your average romance…takes some time for sparks to fly.
I found the story slow. At first it was interesting but then it went and on with so little happening. I did finish it today and rate it so so.
