I was desperate to read Desperate Play and I wasn’t disappointed!!!
Everything I love in a romantic suspense!
This book is so good! If you like suspense, lies, betrayal, action, and love then you will love this book. Wyatt Tanner works undercover for the FBI and has set it up to get into Nova Star Technologies by helping save the chairman. There is espionage going on that is threatening national security within Nova Star. Hamilton, who is the head of the company, will not work with the FBI because he is afraid his son is involved. He ends up hiring Wyatt as the head of his security after Wyatt saved him. Avery Caldwell’s life is the stars and outer space. Avery and Hamilton have the same dream and are working on getting someone to Mars. Avery’s friend Noelle gets involved some way and gets killed. Avery wants to find the killer and almost gets killed when she goes to Noelle’s apartment to look for something Noelle told her about before she died. Hamilton tells Wyatt to stay with Avery 24/7 to protect her. Things really heat up in more than one way after that.
This is a book you do not want to set down. I kept thinking I knew who was behind the espionage and then I would think it was someone else! There were family members who were suspect. I loved that Avery had such an adventure even though terrible things were happening to her. She usually just did her job and not much else. I loved this book and strongly encourage you to read the book. I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader’s Copy.
DESPERATE PLAY
Avery is a an astrophysicist meeting her friend Noelle, when she is murder.
A request to go to her apartment, to get a remembrance from their childhood. Will she recognize it. We meet Wyatt working undercover, there is a mole. What draws these two together, and now the killer wants them.
There is a leak at the aerospace, where they all work at, who is it, and what does he want. She has given us another emotion, tense plot, that will leave you trying to figure it out. Been a reader of hers for years and she never fails to deliver a great story. As the title says’ “Desperate Play”, with Avery and Wyatt as players
I am thrilled to have read this book a bit early, and happy to write my personal review. I am a book lover and have been reading many authors and genres for years. Barbara’s books are amazing and grab you well before you get to the end of Chapter 1. While this is book 3 in the series jump right in because you will love Wyatt and Avery’s story. This book has a few mentions of people and places from the previous two books, but they are woven into this book so well that you are never at a loss of how the characters interact. This story is one of intrigue and betrayal, friendship and love. Lots of mystery and it will keep you guessing right to the end
Book three in this series. Plenty of intrigue, questions and twists in this one. Outstanding story and romance to top it all off. There were a couple of places the story bottomed out, then spun back up into the mystery you expect. The whole series is a good read, don’t miss it.
I absolutely loved this book!
Barbara Freethy has done it again!
It is an excellent romance suspense story. It pulled me in, & kept me
reading, wanting to find out what
happens next.
Special agent Wyatt Tanner has been working undercover for the FBI for many years. His newest assignment is to find a mole within Nova Star, as head of security. When people start turning up dead, who can Wyatt trust. He is asked to protect the dead girl’s best friend, Avery Cauldwell. The killer may have seen her. Avery works as director of educational program at Nova Star. Wyatt & Avery find out right away that she is in danger. He will do everything he can to protect her. There are lots of twist & turns,
& it will keep you guessing till
the very end.
A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE!!!
LOOK OUT! There’s danger up ahead. Off the Grid is a labyrinth. Each tale pulls readers deeper into the abyss. Desperate Play amplifies the chill factor. Wyatt finds himself at the center of a scary situation. Who do you trust, when it seems like the whole world is against you? Freethy intensifies the fear as the danger level rises. Unpredictability is a seductive aphrodisiac. Barbara Freethy uses it in a way that will chill, thrill and appeal. Avery and Wyatt will leave you breathless.
Desperate Play is a typical Barbara Freethy romantic suspense novel. From the opening scene, it grabs your attention & doesn’t let go. The plot twists & turns with surprises at every turn. Every time I thought I knew who did it, another suspect came up. The Off the Grid series follows a group of FBI agents that bonded in training. Each book is self contained with appearances from some of the others. There is a secondary ongoing thread about someone in the FBI screwing with their careers but it is an underlying thread tying the stories together. This book follows Wyatt, an undercover agent & Avery, an astrophysicist as they race to discover who is behind acts of espionage & theft & her friend Noelle’s murder. Who can they trust? Who is trying to kill Avery?
Just love this series, I am hooked and can not wait to get into the next one. I find they keep you guessing right until the end and I love that!
Barbara Freethy has once again delivered an incredible romantic thriller with Desperate Play. I absolutely loved Desperate Play, the third book in her Off the Grid series. Each book in the series keeps getting better and better. I think that Desperate Play is my favorite in the series so far. It had me guessing who was behind the dramatic events the entire book. I was truly surprised when the culprit was revealed and the reasoning behind their actions. I could not out it down. I loved every page. I have read some of Barbara Freethy’s other books, both her romances and other romantic thrillers and have thoroughly enjoyed them. I really enjoyed how the book was told from the perspective of the main characters. I love getting the insight and feelings from the different characters. Barbara Freethy has shown that she is a master storyteller regardless of the genre. Desperate Play is the story of Wyatt Tanner, an undercover FBI agent who takes on various assignments where his undercover skills are needed and Avery Caldwell an astrophysicist and in charge of the education department at Nova Star. Wyatt is working undercover as the newly hired security director at Nova Star investigating issues involving national security. Avery’s childhood friend is murdered in the fun house on the Santa Monica Pier and Avery wants to know who killed her friend. Avery goes to Noelle’s apartment the following day searching for clues, when an armed man comes out of the bathroom. Wyatt arrives in time to save Avery, but the gunman gets away. While they are searching for clues about Noelle’s murder and the attempts on their lives, Wyatt and Avery share secrets from their past and begin to explore their feelings for one another. My favorite line describing their relationship is “They’d shared and shown their true selves to each other.” I really enjoy the poignant and bittersweet moments, the plot twists and the surprises that I have come to love and expect in Barbara Freethy’s books and Desperate Play did not disappoint. One of my favorite parts of the story are the poignant moments that Avery shares with her father, Brett and the moments she shares with Wyatt. I love that Bree Adams, was also a character in Desperate Play and the role she played in the story. I love how all Barbara Freethy’s epilogues, wrap up the ending of the story. Never would I have guessed who was behind the murder of Noelle and the attempts on Avery’s life, that was truly a surprise plot twist. I love how all the lose ends got tied up. I loved the characters and the way she describes the locations in and around Los Angeles. My favorite location was the beach where Wyatt takes Avery to let out her emotions following Noelle’s murder and how that same location is used for Noelle’s memorial. It was really an incredible story and I loved every page. So looking forward to reading Parisa Maxwell’s story in Elusive Promise.
Barbara Freethy is one of my favorite authors. I love this series.
Hated to have to put it down.
Read until 3 AM so I could finish it.
It was a story filled with the unknown and suspense. Enjoyed the characters and twists and turns. Thanks
It keeps you guessing throughout.
I admire every author for all their hard work. I enjoyed the story, and will read more books written by this author. The characters are adorable and the story telling is consuming. I escaped in a well-written romantic fictional world until I finished reading.
Massively fantastic read!
Interesting plot.
Another great book in the FBI series by Barbara Freethy. It was a great mystery with FBI agent Wyatt a stargazing Avery. Lots of twists and turns that kept me turning pages.
This is the third book in the Off The Grid:FBI series. This series by Barbara Freethy is phenomenal. Wow! Each one is just as fantastic a read as the previous one. It is so very well written. Full of mystery, suspense, a plot loaded with twists and a wonderful romance between Wyatt Tanner & Avery Caldwell, who he was supposed to protect. I was so caught up in reading this book, that I couldn’t wait to finish it. Well done Barabara! You definitely know how to weave a tale of mystery and suspense, along with some romance. Looking forward to reading Paisa’s story now.
