In Eden, the truth can have deadly consequences.Brooklyn Anderson knows it looks bad. She was found wiping down a gun. Her father now dead. His blood on her hands. The incomprehensible nightmare has started.Seven days earlier, Brooklyn had returned to Eden to care for her beloved father, who lay helpless in a hospital bed. Her estranged sister, Ginny, said he fell. But as Brooklyn soon realizes, … Brooklyn soon realizes, Ginny is prone to lying.
Former Eden resident Darius Woods was in the hospital too. The famous actor had written a screenplay that would lay bare all the secrets of the town, but within hours of his return, someone shot him.
As the Woods investigation proceeds, and Brooklyn starts to question everything she believes about her family, her neighbors, and her home, secrets and lies begin to unravel. But nothing can prepare her for where those lies will finally lead.
And sharing the truth of what happened the night her father died might just make things worse.

A piercing glimpse into the complexities of the human heart. Diskin once again plumbs the shadows beneath the surface — this time of a small Midwestern town — in this story of devastating secrets. Smart, taut, and expertly layered with twists I didn’t see coming, Desperate Paths will not only cause you to second-guess everything you think you know about the characters, but spark important conversations. A book that will stay with you long after the last page.

Very good read.
Complicated family dynamics explored in a very complicated town. Toss in religion and unbending beliefs and light the fuse. And that’s only a part of this mess! Great exploration!
Intrigue, originality, suspense and with characters that felt so real they could have strolled up to me and introduced themselves without it feeling odd…this book had all that and so much more. E.C. Diskin wove a masterful small-town tale of lies and deceit, hatred and forgiveness, all the while addressing important social issues head-on. This is a story I won’t be forgetting any time soon.
This is more of a family drama with insights into family dynamics and the “whys” in relationships…between parents and children, siblings and spouses. There are mysteries abd secrets and betrayals.
Brooklyn and Ginny are as different as sisters can be, one almost 17 years older and white, the other multiracial and adopted. One enters the home of John and Bonnie as the other leaves to marry. In the small town of Eden, the town is seen by Sheriff Wilson as a nice small safe place.
The dialog moves smoothly from present to past, from Brooklyn to Ginny…..great job! And includes abortion protestors, racial divide and church abuse of young girls….all done carefully without glorifying the situations.
Brooklyn and Ginny were sisters but then John is found dead..their Dad and old cases involvung guns and shootings come up. Sheriff Wilson is retiring but he knows his town and as his last act he realizes, ” justice is mire than following evidence, its doing the right thing. ”
And the secrets are deep and thought provoking so be prepared to be a bit shocked and then put it all together.
I throughly enjoyed E.C. Diskins new book, Desperate Paths. The characters were well developed throughout the book. First there was Brooklyn’s frustration. There were strange events going on which which she didn’t understand. There was the mysterious Ginny with emotions that seemed very strange and some comments Brooklyn’s father made which were out of character.. With the characters personality depicted I thought I had figured out the end of the story, but boy was I wrong. It came as a complete surprise. I recommend that you read this book.
Good story with many twists!
