Award-winning author, Alex Kava pulls readers into the middle of the storm and has them gasping for air even as they turn the next page. A trailblazer in the K9 mystery genre, Kava creates a “dynamic between Ryder and his canines that reveals a world rarely shared in fiction and perhaps nowhere presented more effectively than in this series.” —Phil Jason, Florida WeeklyA STORM IS COMINGIn … series.” —Phil Jason, Florida Weekly
A STORM IS COMING
In Alabama: A deadly outbreak of tornadoes sends K9 handlers, Ryder Creed and Jason Seaver with their scent dogs, Grace and Scout to search for survivors. As storms intensify and Ryder and Jason race against time to save victims, they end up racing to save themselves.
NOT EVERYONE’S STORM IS THE SAME.
In Chicago: Francine “Frankie” Russo is irritated when her young co-worker calls at 5:00 am for a video-chat and catches her in only a towel. She’s so annoyed with Tyler Gates that she’s barely paying attention when two men confront him on the street. In a matter of seconds, Frankie witnesses Tyler’s murder. Then the killers pick up the phone. And suddenly, they know what Frankie looks like, who she is, where she works and lives. She knows absolutely nothing about them. But one thing’s for certain—they’re coming for her next.
WHEN THE STORM HITS . . .
Frankie calls the only people she knows can help: her childhood friend, Hannah Washington and Hannah’s business partner, Ryder Creed. Hannah tells her to “come on home,” and she arranges a meeting for Frankie to meet with FBI agent Maggie O’Dell.
Meanwhile in the Florida Panhandle: Creed’s sister, Brodie is dealing with her own storm. She’s realizing that after sixteen years of captivity, surviving was only the first step.
With the killers hot on her trail, Frankie races to meet Maggie. But she has no idea that she’s driving straight into the grasp of another killer—a monster storm system. She and Maggie will need Ryder and Jason’s help, but no one is safe from the devastation. And by the time the sky clears, none of them will ever be the same.
WHO WILL BE STRONG ENOUGH TO SURVIVE?
In Desperate Creed Alex Kava, once again, delivers her signature trademark combining “well-developed characters” (Publishers Weekly) with “a highly original plot” (Suspense Magazine) then packing it with “twists, turns and suspense galore” (Modern Dog). “Did I mention the dogs? They and their human partners are simply the heart and soul of everything.” (Florida Weekly)

As if killer tornadoes weren’t scary enough!
Alex Kava, known for twisty psychological thrillers, unleashes a series of storms in Desperate Creed, further complicating a murder investigation by series characters Ryder Creed and Maggie O’Dell.
We often have tornadoes in the Midwest, but I had no idea about Dixie Alley which stretches across a large area of the lower Mississippi Valley and includes strong, high-speed tornadoes. Fans of either series will love the nonstop action beginning in Chicago, road tripping through Nashville, Alabama, and Florida all in one heart-stopping week of murder and mayhem.
I loved learning more about Ryder Creed’s scent dog training center in Florida where he teaches rescue dogs to be working K9s, especially his own dog, Grace. She has as much personality as the perky Jack Russell terrier on the Wishbone TV series. I’d never considered how dangerous it is for those dogs on rescue jobs where they might search piles of glass and debris in the heat and bad weather.
Kava’s skill at making us care about Creed’s family and friends going about their everyday lives, then throwing them into –in this case– the eye of the storm, made for a page-turner that kept me up past my bedtime several nights in a row.
Who needs sleep, right?
This was a realistic & suspenseful story. What made me nervous & jumpy was that we were having a strong Thunderstorm with high wind gusts as I was reading. That certainly added to the overall effect of the story.
Loved the characters!
Ryder Creed and partner Jason each have a K-9 dog trained for search and rescue — Grace and Scout. Ryder’s friend, Hannah and sister live on the training complex where they train K-9’s for search and rescue. Just as Jason and Ryder are sent to Alabama to help in the aftermath of several tornados Hannah gets a phone call from a dear friend in Chicago, Frankie Russo. Frankie is an ad executive who was video chatting with a co worker and witnesses his murder. The murders see her face and with the co worker’s phone has all of Frankie’s information. Ryder, Jason, Frankie and an FBI agent, Maggie O’Dell all converge in the same place just as the tornados hit and the murderers are closing in on Frankie. The excitement is non stop.
I love this author.
I love this series. I love the dogs and the main protagonist. Always interesting and suspenseful plots.
I love this series, the characters are realistic and the storylines are always a great tale.
Loved this book as much as the others in the series.
Love the reality of working rescue dogs & the characters.
This was an intense novel. If you have ever lived close to or in an area for ‘disaster’ i.e. hurricanes, tornadoes, you will feel like you are in the storm with the characters. Very realistic in the description of the destruction of tornadoes. I enjoyed the ‘fleshing out’ of some of the characters from the previous books. Glad that we now have Brodie in person to see how she develops as an intricate part of the group. Maggie O’Dell shows up again which is always interesting. Love those books too. Now I’m looking forward to the next K9 adventure of Creed and Grace.
I LOVED IT. Could not put it down.
Another good story from the author, love the Ryder Creed series! I live in the Midwest and tornadoes are both horrifying and fascinating! Creed and his group run into a line of storms that just about blow you away!
All books in series are great!
I enjoy all of the Creed series and this one was no exception.
A little too much natural disaster and not enough of the initial plot for my taste, but definitely an engaging read.
Love her books. I felt like I was in the storm. I couldn’t put the book down.
Alex Kava series on K0 scent dogs is so well researched. I love the characters: Creed, Jason, Hannah and now Brodie are portrayed in a way that makes you want to a part of the team. THe description of the tornadoes and their destruction were vivid. I’m happy to hear more Creeds are in the works! If you haven’t read her Maggie O’Dell series…well just saying!
LOVE THIS SERIES TRY TO READ THEM IN ORDER
best of the series so far
Desperate Creed by Alex Kava is another excellent book by Kava. I fell in love with this author years ago when I picked up her first Maggie O’Dell novel and I have stayed an avid fan for years waiting for her new book to come out and having to own it and once again Alex Kava blows my mind with her writing. I honestly don’t know what I would do without the characters in these books.
Desperate Creed is full of action and really has more Maggie O’Dell then Ryder Creed it is still a great book for this dynamic duo. I loved how it picked up where the last book left off and continued their story. Their book was also full of emotional intensity that other books have not had in the past.
Desperate Creed gets five out of five stars from me.
