ARC REVIEW
Jennie and Patrick, Nate and Tucker
A wonderful second chance romance suspense! Tucker stole the show for me.
The book opens with Jennie escaping with her son, Nate, after being kidnapped. They were running for their lives when Jennie fell down a mountain. Patrick and his Search and Rescue dog heard Nate shouting for his mother and went to help.
To say Patrick was surprised to see that the woman was someone he loved in the past was putting it mildly. And then to find out the child was his! After he rescued them, they were still in danger. Who was after them and why?
Jennie and Patrick had a messed-up history with lots of misunderstandings. Especially when it came to their breakup.
Fans of Christian romantic suspense would enjoy this book.
An Excellent Story!
Suspenseful, surprising, romantic and so much more. I really enjoyed it.
First of all, that is the cutest rescue dog on the cover. I did not know that Airedales could serve in this way. We used to have an Airedale mix when I was 10 and they are so energetic. I learned a lot about the training and operation of working canines.
This was a suspenseful tale about Jennie and her son Nate who meet up with a Patrick Sanders, the dog handler who Jennie knew in her youth. They have to overcome old hurts and rely on God to see them through terrifying events that come out of their past. The scenes with the dog were interesting and the interaction with the boy and the dog were very sweet.
First of a series that I am anxious to continue.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. I was not required to give a favorable review. All opinions are my own.*
What a great romantic suspense read! Second chance is one of my favorite romance tropes and I absolutely loved that this book featured it! From the first page I was enthralled with this story and hated to stop reading! Jennie and Patrick were fantastic main characters, and I loved Nate too, but I think my favorite character was Patrick’s K-9 partner, Tucker! I loved Tucker so much and he totally made the story for me, he was so amazing and such a sweetheart and I found myself wishing I could transport myself through the pages so I could pet him and get doggy kisses! I also learned a couple of things from this book, 1. That they use Airedales as police dogs in Scotland, and 2. That Airedales have been used by police since WWI. I had no idea and I loved learning these things! The suspense was phenomenal (as I have come to exect from this author) and the author did a fabulous job of describing the setting. I felt like I was traversing the New Mexico desert right alongside the characters!
I absolutely loved Desert Rescue and most highly recommend it!
I received a copy of this book from the author. My review was not influenced in any way. All thoughts and opinions are one hundred percent my own.
Desert Rescue is a very intense, suspenseful book from cover to cover. It is a story of loss, betrayal, recovery, reunion, and love reclaimed. Although it deals with the seamier side of life, it is a well-written, clean novel, and in my opinion one of Lisa Phillips’ best works to date. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it.
I loved this book. The characters were great and the pace of the story is moving you with it! Definitely a winner!
Jennie and her son Nate have been kidnapped. Patrick Sanders from the state police and his search and rescue dog have been called to do a search. Patrick finds them and realizes it is the Jennie he loved in high school. He also finds out Nate is his son. Jennie’s father ran Patrick and his mother out of town and through his lies he kept them apart. Now Jennie and Nate are in danger as these men are still after them. I was hooked from the beginning. This novel was captivating and was difficult to put down.
From the moment I started this book to the second I finished it, the author kept me captivated. There was a lot of action to keep the story fast paced, but the moments when there wasn’t any danger there was emotional turmoil to work through.
The past came back to haunt Jennie, in more ways than one. All she wanted was to keep her son safe and as far away from anything having to do with her past. She didn’t want her son to go through the same things she did growing up. But it showed up in the form of trespassers who kidnapped her when she tried to protect herself, her land, and her son.
When they got lost a Search-and-Rescue was called in. Patrick was sent to find the girl he had always loved and the son he didn’t know about. It wasn’t long before the truth came out and with it, all of the anger and pain from the past. He had a son and was never even told. How could he forgive Jennie for keeping that from him. He had missed so much. He determined to never miss a second more, but first, he had to get them out of danger.
The main characters had a lot they had to work through. The past isn’t so easy to forget. We carry scares and old wounds sometimes for the rest of our lives. They didn’t know how they could move past it to the relationship they both wanted.
They had to learn to trust and rely on each other and on God. The situations they were put through helped them to realize that they couldn’t stand the thought of losing each other. Their love had never died. Except now they knew that the other could easily hurt them. That’s what had happened in the past. What would stop it from happening again?
The romance never took away from the suspense of the situation. Emotions were high so it kept being brought up, but the danger and staying safe was always first. They had to keep their son safe.
Finding each other again rocked both of their worlds, but together, they could conquer anything.
The writing of the story at times came across as a little choppy, but the story was so fast paced that it never took away from the story. It did add a little bit of tension, but was overdone. That is just my opinion and others might prefer that form of writing. In this story it could have been used less, that would have made the story flow easier for me and essentially make the story perfect. I am easily able to overlook it because I enjoyed the story so much.
I look forward to reading other books from this author. Reading this one has introduced me to a publisher that I am very interested in exploring more from.
““Come on.” Jennie Wilson held tight to her son’s hand as they crept down the back steps of the house. A house where they’d been held for hours. Nearly a whole day, if she’d correctly tracked the rise and subsequent fall of the sun. “
Whoa, what an opening scene that is! Can you imagine being held against your will in your own house, all while trying to keep yourself and your son safe making your escape? Yikes! Talk about a hyper-tense start to a story. I was wondering how in the world they were going to make it anywhere under the shadow of the night when they were surrounded by bad guys. Guys who had evil intent; talk about sending shivers down my spine! Who will come to their rescue? Enter K-9 Search & Rescue dog Tucker, a handsome curly haired Airedale terrier trained to find the lost just by scent. He stole the show for me because I love K-9 officers slightly more than their two-legged counterparts. Though I have to say, state police officer Patrick Sanders makes for an imposing figure (and just as handsome)! These two work in sync, almost as if they were connected at the hip. Things get even more complicated because both Jennie & Patrick have a past history together, and a son he didn’t even know he had. Cue the extra layer of drama!
I won’t spoil the story by giving anything away, but Desert Rescue is a multi-dimensional suspense that engages both mind & body. It also draws so many emotions out when the author unfolds Jenna & Patrick’s backstories with so much misconception & heartache to work through! Second chance romance is also a favorite of mine because there are reasons why a couple didn’t make it the first go-round. Watching the characters work though all that mess just adds so much depth for me. The hard-won happily-ever-after is so much sweeter because of it. There’s also the faith thread that’s very evident, Jenna helped Patrick re-prioritize the importance of it in his life. Forgiveness & the ability to move on when we lean on God’s strength is a huge part of what this story is about. I think readers of inspirational romantic suspense will love this new book penned by Lisa Phillips. And an exciting new series called K-9 Search + Rescue by Love Inspired Suspense! I can’t wait for the next installment.

Lisa Phillips is one of my favorite suspense writers. When she throws in a bit of romance and a K-9 dog, I’m definitely all in! This story is more than “a bit” romantic as it turns out that Patrick and Jennie have a complicated past. I’m not normally one to read details but Lisa’s description of Jennie’s escape had me hanging on every word. You know you’ve found a good author when, as soon as you finish a book, you’re back online looking for another good read.
This book hooks you on the first page and doesn’t let go. It has just the right amount of action, drama, suspense and romance to keep you turning the pages to see what happens next. If you like inspirational romance that will keep you on the edge of your seat, grab this book. I loved it!
This is a such a great book! It’s such a page turner. The fact that it is a Christian read is a plus. I was hooked from beginning to the end. I definitely recommend it to all lovers of romance and suspense.
